Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Traveling from Hokitaki to Christchurch we always stop here for a coffee and the best cheese rolls in New Zealand 10/10 and I've tried many. Plus heaps of other food options to suit all taste buds. Well worth the stop even just to see the cheeky Keas that call the Arthur's Pass Store their second home.

Nice enough. Good little selecrion of things, coffee was ok, place was nice and tidy. No keas that morning. You pay a bit more up there on the mountain.

My mum and I ate here a couple of times as it was the only place still trading when we stayed overnight in Arthur's Pass The chicken pie was fantastic and we enjoyed our eggs benedict. The fresh fruit and hiking snacks are high quality. There is a also a good selection of souvenirs. If sitting outside guard your food closely as we saw people losing their food to the cheeky kea. They are so much fun to watch.

We were just here for a brief refreshment stop. We sat outside with a view of the mountains while we ate an ice-cream. There were a number of native parrots, I think Kea, lurking, looking for an opportunity to grab your food.

Fantastic coffee. In fact the best we had on the South Island. The food prices were very reasonable and the staff were wonderful. Of course the keas weren’t as polite, so sit inside if they bother you. We chose to sit outside and guard our food and precious coffee.

Aside from one young woman clearing the tables you got the feeling that all staff wished the customers would disappear. It’s a very strange attitude for a business but I guess that’s what happens when you’re almost the only option for miles around. There was a massive queue and the staff were even slowing things up quibbling with a customer about whether they’d got the bill 100% right, the cafe thought they’d missed something small (but hadn’t!). This attitude is the opposite of the welcoming hospitality New Zealanders pride themselves on and as a kiwi I felt embarrassed. I also heard a staff member complain out loud about how the customers never stopped coming! Our coffee was well made and hot and the food was fine (but pricey) and the setting and keas were great. It’s just the staff who need to lift their game and put a smile on their face and some care in their hearts (although I suspect the issues may start with the owner!)

We stopped to get a pie and sandwiches. The pepper steak pie was horrible. The meat inside was of very poor quality and I could not eat it. The sandwiches were ok but not great either. Won't stop there again.

The cafe is open for breakfast & lunch. We had a burger for lunch, and was mediocre at best. But sitting outside for coffee & cake was a much better experience, watching the Keas and their observers ! The store sells a few limited provisions, but don't expect to get a lot of choice. They have a much larger selection of clothing & souvenirs for the visitors driving through. Also it closes at 4:30pm - early even by New Zealand standards. Overall, we had the impression of an establishment with a monopoly, a guaranteed clientele, and which does not need to work too hard.

Food was average. A male person used a vacuum cleaner to remove crumbs from inside the food cabinets while there was food still in the cabinet!! Disgusting. Hope the kitchen hygiene is better than that.

We stopped here for lunch after our challenging walk in the Devil's Punchbowl. We were hungry so grabbed a burger. I wasn't expecting much, but it was a good size burger and tasty too. Be prepared to wait a while for it as this cafe does get crowded.

Food is ok, toilets were very much in need of a revamp. There is a lot of people visiting daily on way to their destination and it could do will a little attention to the cleanliness of the bathrooms.

We visited twice today, before and after a long walk. On both occasions staff (two different) were abrupt and rude. On the second occasion we had queued for an ice cream, not realising that you had to pay around the other side of the café first. She rudely pointed to the sign stick to the fridge which had been obscured by those in front of us on the queue. “Didn’t you see the sign in front of you!! “Come back after you’ve paid”z she then muttered what appeared to be something rice out even a profanity on her own language. When my husband looked startled, she said, “I was talking about someone else”. Unlikely and actually still not okay. Before we began our walk and ordered food, we asked another person where the Devils Punch Bowl walk began. She abruptly replied “Over the road”. It clearly wasn’t opposite and when my husband asked enter it was to the left or right, she repeated it again, “Over the road!” Very rudely. These people desperately need a lesson or ten in customer service. Their attitude spoilt our visits to the cafe.

The sign on the door warned of delays due to staff shortages, and they had cut back hours and restricted meals to cope. But despite being literally the only place in town they did a good job serving the queue and the coffee was perfectly fine. The store has small liquor section out back which has a good enough range, some basic supplies like bread and milk, and serves a small range of pies, sausage rolls, and at various times other meals. Not a supermarket, and not a restaurant, but good for the basics, and for a coffee or pie.
