The Gladstone Pub aka The Gladdy is the stuff of legends, having been around since the 1800s - and although it's had a few facelifts, it still has sense of history about it. The interior is basic yet cosy, but it's the verandah and outdoor...spaces which everyone swarms to in the summer. Pretty standard pub grub on the menu, like fish and chips and burgers, but the Asian squid and pork salad was a stand out - more than making up for the lacklustre presentation. Wine selection is good - which you'd expect in wine county, it's a Tui pub so beer range disappointing! Service a bit slow, but most were nice enough. All in all, highky recommend if you're in the neighbourhood - about 15 mins from Carterton.More

This rural pub set against the rolling hills in the eastern Wairarapa is authentic and welcoming. While there has been a pub here since the 1870s, the current single storey wooden building has its origins in the 1930s and retains some of the character of...that era. Popular with the locals, it is quite a contrast to the winery eateries in this part of the world with their wealthy clientele who are mainly visitors to the area, and their modern, designer interiors. The pub offers a menu featuring classic kiwi pub fare - fish and chips, pizzas, burgers, and the like - done well and generous in size. On a Sunday lunchtime, the carpark was full and we were pleased that we had called ahead to book a table. Inside there were large and small groups enjoying catching up over a meal - from a large family gathering featuring three generations to groups of couples and young families. Children were welcome but weren’t dominating the space. There were five in our party and a pleasant table by the window had been reserved for us. The vegetarian in our group chose a vegetable pizza which was tasty with a good base, while another of us is gluten intolerant and he was able to get a version of the Gladstone burger which used two slices of gluten free bread in lieu of the burger bun. I went for the Gladstone Burger proper - a tasty pattie, fresh fillings, great bun and excellent wedges too. The dining area that we were seated in has a lot of character, with a fireplace as its focal point and bits and pieces reflecting the history of the hotel and the surrounding area. Things can slow up a little when busy, but they are well organised and the wait is not too long.More

Thanks for your review I see you not that there has been a pub here since 1870, this is the 150 year of the Gladstone Inn, in one form or another and we intend to have a special family day over this summer watch our...More

A group of 6 family members had lunch here on Wednesday (December 30th). Food was great, it was a busy summers day so service was a bit slow (happy to overlook that). Not so happy to overlook the forgotten drink and dessert orders, especially as...we when followed up we were told they were on the way (dessert order was never given to the kitchen). Staff were very apologetic and took 20% off our bill, but regardless still put a bit of a downer on our lunch.More

What a treat to find this gem, slightly off the beaten Wairarapa track, nestled along one of the back streets near masterton. Picturesque setting next to the river and bridge and by all accounts has been there in one form or another since the 1870’s....We’ve been here a few times for lunch and never left disappointed. Generous car park outside that does fill up on peak hours so plan you time there to make sure your not waiting for food and drinks. There’s a great area out the back for the kids to play and you can all devour the amazing tasty pizza. Well worth making the effort to hunt this place out.More

We are so lucky to have the Gladdy as our 'local' - the meal we had last night was absolutely perfect. Pan fried salmon on crushed potato salad - so good! My other half had steak done rare and it was beautifully cooked. Passion fruit...cheese cake to finish .... just yum. Put that all together with perfect and attentive service, a happy and welcoming atmosphere, good local wines and very reasonable prices and you can't help but have a brilliant night. We moved from our table when we finished dining and took our drinks to the bar area to sit and continue our evening. So relaxing.More

We went here over Labour weekend. We had a nice table outside in the sunshine overlooking the river. A busy time for the restaurant which probably reflected in the wait time, though perhaps more staff onside would have helped. We waited for ages to be...served and after chasing down the waitress who said she would be right over proceeded to clear a table. We went inside and placed our order. Food did not take too long to arrive but was disappointing when it did arrive, both in presentation and taste.More

We had booked but they had lost the email. Not a problem as the very helpful waitress gave us a table. We were probably lucky as we had arrived ahead some other groups. We were able to sit outside in the sun by the river....The food was good. When we came to pay, the proprietor (we assume) had difficulties working the electronic equipment. Minor quibbles only.More

first the good things. This place is a rarity in this part of the country. A country inn with food and a decent pub atmosphere. We sat in front of a Nice wood fire The staff here are very jolly, and our food was good....Lovely home made sausages and a decent fish and chips. Now the not so good. The menu is uninspiring. We were looking forward to Sunday lunch, but there is nothing but pub fare, still, the menu is online and we should have checked. Unfortunately we our order was lost on the computer. We waited well over an hour from ordering to delivery. Service recovery was good, apologies and a complimentary drink each, A pity, we'll give them a second chance.More
