Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Best seats in the house are the six at the bar, grandstand seats into the kitchen and the entertainment. Kitchen team worked seamlessly, can recommend the picanha, the mussels indeed it all looked great cooked over an open flame. Host will come and chat with you, enjoy a cocktail in the lane way. Good menu, good wine and good entertainment. Enjoyed our date night immensely. Book to avoid disappointment

Who would've thought you'd find such awesome food in "sleepy" Whangamata! Limited menu that they do fantastically. We're avowed carnivores, but thoroughly enjoyed the mostly vegetarian dishes we had. The surprise was the beetroot, greens and burrata salad. Oh my, were the smoked beets tasty (and I normally don't like beets). The fresh catch carpaccio was scrumptious with the mix of flavors - our favorite of the night. There are a number of wines by the glass, and our choices paired well with all the food. We love eating in small restaurants, as you can interact with the staff a lot, and here they seem to love visiting and helping everyone. What a great evening!

The best place to have a sharing meal. We ordered homemade focaccia and local cheese, garden pickles, lavosh bar snacks to start. The focaccia served with salted oil was superb and probably the best focaccia we've eaten. The Sharing Plates - Mushroom skewers, manchengo & mojo verde were the favourite of most of us and when we go again more than one will be ordered as it was so good! The best way to eat it was a little of all, especially the greens with mojo verde which we couldn't describe except to say we loved it, so altogether a real taste sensation! Lamb shoulder dish was cooked so the meat fell apart and again best eaten with a little of all. A nice dish. The Picanha (we ordered two) - beef medium rare cooked well and the smoked onion butter was delicious. Once again, if possible have a little of all in a bite to experience it. We could only manage one dessert between the four of us. The Basque cheesecake was decadently rich and not too sweet. The little sprinkle of salt on the top added to a great dish.

Absolutely sensational taste explosion the lamb was Devine & perfectly cooked by Barend. As soon as you arrive Rowan makes you feel warmly welcomed & so special. Service is impeccable & I highly recommend sitting at the chefs bar to catch the excitement of the chef cooking under a cool calm manner (unlike Gordon Ramsay) but sizzling hot 🔥 grill!! We’ll be back so many other delicious looking dishes to taste 10/10 all round!

The food, the atmosphere, the service. All absolutely top notch. My first visit was with my husband in Jan ‘24 when we sat at the bar and were blown away by the skills in the kitchen and the food they produced. Our second visit was with my mum, an old school farmers wife, and my eight year old son and we all raved about every dish. We love that time is taken to talk to each table in an relaxed and interested manner - even though there is a lot going on, you are made to feel important and part of the Camina story by being there.

What a lovely surprise to find this place with amazing ambiance and service from the moment we walked in the door. The food was delicious and we loved the way Rowan came and sat at the table next to us to chat like an old friend and explain the menu and their business partnership. We were on a girls night out to celebrate a big birthday so that personal touch made our night. We noticed he treated everyone the same way and his team were also friendly and efficient down to the young boy clearing tables. Way to go guys we wish you every success.

Camina Restaurant in Whangamata offers a unique dining experience with all food flame-cooked, promising a delightful smoky flavor. The beautiful interior adds to the ambiance, making it a must-visit for those seeking both great taste and aesthetic pleasure. Highly recommend.

Beautifully cooked food in a warm atmosphere with excellent service. The big wood fired cook top dominates the room and provides lots of interest as the crew work their magic. Its not hard to see why this wee gem is full every night. It has a strong local following and its reputation is spreading quickly. Rowan and his team have done a wonderful job.

We were in Whangamata for a long weekend and booked Camino for dinner on the Friday. It’s so good !! We went back again for Saturday dinner. They use a chargrill for most of the dishes .. the food is so tasty . Over the two nights we tried quite a bit of the menu : fish , meat and veggies . I can honestly say everything was good . Great service and atmosphere too… and an interesting wine list . This place would be great in Auckland so it’s great to have it at the beach !

Spectacular food in a cozy, welcoming space. All the food is cooked over a wood fire, which imbues the most delectable taste but also adds to the ambience of the room. The aubergine and grilled fish are a must, but save room for the desserts too. We paired with Deep down wine, perfect complement for the food. Enjoy!

Barend & Rowan have created something special in Whanagmata. Converting the old Cinema into a restaurant and retaining a bit of the old cinema feel is genius! You will be warmly welcomed by Rowan and front team with either drinks at the bar or a meal at the table. Food & Drinks Menu is simple and intelligent while cooking over fire is the winner, giving everything a magnificent flavor. Barend’s brigade are demons in the kitchen. Outstanding dish for us has always been their Beef ‘Picanha’ delicious rump which has the deft touch, so juicy and flavorsome. The only disappointment is that I’ll never be able to roll Jaffa’s down the old aisle again. Oh well onwards and upwards I say ! Bravo guys we live what you’ve created.

One of the best places I have dined from the initial welcome to the restaurant to the extraordinary setting and environment. We had 3 platters that all made the taste buds tingle with amazing taste. Highly do recommend to anyone wanting an experience that will leave you wanting more.

This is just the best place in Whangamata for an amazing culinary experience. Barend and Rowan have totally got this little gem pumping, putting out the most flavoursome food, totally different from anything else on the whole Coromandel Peninsula. We tasted the Market fish, the Harissa Chicken and Beetroot, fennel and burata salad, all of which were just sublime but don’t forget to order the homemade sourdough just to have something on hand to mop up all the delicious sauces and juices on your plate. Would highly recommend Camina.

OMG the best dining experience I have had in such a long time, last night we sat at the bar, and watched , salivated , as the food was cooked , presentation was spot on, and the taste ….OMG ! My taste buds were awakened like never before. The chefs’ were answering our questions whilst cooking/creating, delivering the freshest, tenderest, tasting plates …. We were unsure which wine to have, and was help at hand! Take my advice and enjoy a Dragon Bones Pinot Noir, or Prophets Rock Pinot Gris, we did and were not disappointed. In all, this dining experience met our expectations more than we thought possible. Thank you guys, we will be back. PS - try the leek , burrito and walnut tostada - stunning !
