Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited twice during our brief stay . On our first visit which was for lunch we had an excellent pizza and the service was good . On our second visit ordering was table service and we ordered coffee and enquired about muffins etc as we had seen them at a distance and looked very average . i asked if I could look at the cabinet food but was told this was not allowed because of Covid Level 2 , with no explanation . After 15 minutes our coffee order never arrived and apparently had not been placed . While I was sorting this out I enquired regarding the not allowed to look at cabinet food rule . A Manager told me as licensed premises they cannot SELL cabinet food directly at the till during Covid Level 2 and could get fined $25,000 . Hey ... all I wanted to do was LOOK , decide if I wanted to buy and order it at the table as required . He said yes they could get fined up to $25000 for that . Really !That was very heavy handed by management . I did take a closer peak and food looked pretty unappealing . Bizzarely when the management person was discussing this with me we were just along from the food cabinet.

Late lunch during Covid restrictions - very busy but felt staff were friendly & doing their best. Margherita pizza was delicious, hot crispy chips $6, reasonably priced kids chicken skewers. Cabinet food selection looked fair. Coffees could have been hotter but good flavour. We had one lovely staff member come and ask us how everything was and noted she was doing so to all the tables. Above & beyond friendliness. Good experience.

The main selling point here is the views... Which I guess is obvious, but the food for breakfast is very average and, for what you get, very costly. They definitely benefit from lack of competition. I'm not sure if lockdown also has an effect. $32 per person for basic cafe food, cook averagely, with machine made coffee and average juice.

My partner and I went here for dinner after completing the mueller hut hike that day. We initially intended to go to the alpine restaurant at the Hermitage but were unaware that it was by reservation only. We were extremely disappointed to find out the only other option in the village was the Sir Edmund Hillary Cafe, which offered a very limited menu. The only dinner options available were 3 types of pizza, a halloumi and veggie plate, fish and chips, or a choice of a few sandwiches that had been sitting in refrigeration all day. My partner, who can’t eat dairy was forced to have the fish and chips, which were underwhelming at best. Very disappointed overall at the selection and quality. The waitress who served us was unsure of what was on the menu and had to run to the kitchen twice to answer questions for us. We were just a couple looking for a nice dinner after a long day of hiking, and weren’t too fussy about what we ate, but I would imagine a parent looking for a nutritious option for their children would be horrified at the lack of options available. Really disappointing overall, especially since there is nowhere else to eat unless you want to drive to Twizel.

We popped in here while up Mt Cook on the 3rd Jan 2022. We were not advised of any delay when ordering food, however delivery of Nachos ($18), Waffles ($20) & BBQ Chicken Sandwich($16) took 1hr 15 mins. It was so bad that irate customers where starting to line up at the food collection area to push staff along. The tables were not cleaned effectively and lots of dishes left as people left. Furthermore the Nachos were more cream cheese and chips than anything else (practically no bean chilli), the Waffles were dry and more like bread (despite trying to drown them in maple syrup). The only passable meal was the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. Avoid this cafe and take your own food up the mountain.

We went into the cafe to enjoy morning tea. Upon arrival a rude lady was at the self serve counter. As we have never been to the cafe before, we were a little unsure on the lay out, and our way around. So we told her at the counter what we wanted to order, a smoothie was one of the items, to which she replied bluntly and In my option rudely, ‘well did you get it out of the cabinet’ in which I replied puzzled ‘ahhh no’? She huffed, so I replied ‘I’ll go grab it’ and I did. My mother then politely asked if any more muffins would be available, she walked away I presume out to the kitchen when she arrived back she stated ‘no just what is there’. Okay perfect no worries. We then proceeded to eat what we had got. The smoothie was NOT a smoothie - we found out later she (lady at the counter) was meant to take it and blend it up. Which she did not so it was literally chunks of banana and oats and honey in soy milk. Anyway that aside what come out less than 2 mins later. A whole batch more of muffins. Could not believe eyes. The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Would NOT recommend.

We needed to eat quickly after a tiring and long heli hike and this seemed like a good nearby choice. The service was incredibly slow long line to get served and then a 15 min wait for a wrap to get heated. The wrap and salad was nice but expensive for what you got and it was very slow. Also all the table were full of dirty plates and cups. We had to clear a table to sit down. If you have a choice avoid.

Took a couple of family groups there, we got a brief glimpse of the amazing views before it clagged in, and then we enjoyed great coffee and good food. There was a mixup when someone from another table grabbed one of our orders off the counter by mistake - the people there rapidly resolved it in a very nice way for both parties. The manager was fantastic, and this is a really worthwhile stop if in the area,

The location & view is amazing. It's just a shame the food doesn't match. The cabinet food is mostly pies & panninis. You can order a couple of salads but because my order was mixed up & l received a panini instead l can't comment on the quality of these. Our order came out each item separately, so when the panini came out, we thought it was for someone else. If you are a vegetarian/vegan, your choices are very limited. We won't be hurrying back anytime soon, which is a shame because it it truly paradise up there.

The ubiquitous staff shortages are obviously limiting the eating options for tourists. This was the first place that we found that had a choice of food that suited my elderly parents. We weren’t looking for anything fancy. The pies were ok but my chicken wrap was disgusting (and I’m quite easily pleased).

No meet and greet. The place had 6 other people there and, still, our fries were left on the counter getting cold. Not sure why they did not activate the vibrating thing that we had. A real lack of thinking and definitely not what should happen at one of NZ's top destinations.

Aoraki was very quiet this time of year due to COVID - that probably helped.. We ate here after perusing the visitor centre, and the movie theatre was sadly closed. Service was good, food arrived quickly, views while we waited were amazing. There was only one other group in the cafe so we could sit by the windows. Food was really good, two boys ate waffles, we shared a pizza and a salad - they were demolished - very happy we ate here.

Very limited options for gluten free but were happy to adapt menu to accomodate. Coffee took quite a long time and when watching barista, appeared to lack any system. Cafe was almost empty. Food was ok

When staying in house this is the only option for a meal or drink, as the bar doesn’t open till 4pm. On a rainy day enjoyed a very good hot chocolate and a bowl of fries. Various options for seating, we choose lounges, and enjoyed the view. Service was friendly

Friendly little cafe upstairs in the alpine centre. Prices are ok - some a little high ($12shake!) but others more reasonable ($6 decent size fries). Food from counter and kitchen both good quality and tasty - no complaints from anyone. Lovely views over the village and out to the mountains.
