Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hands down the best coffee in Whakatane! The service was extremely fast- I’ve never seen a coffee made so fast and still taste that good! Coffee machine is incredible and you can tell the barista knows exactly what he’s doing! The selection of breads is...great and very mouth wateringMore

Love popping in to this cafe when visiting Whakatane. Excellent bread, pastries and coffee. Highly recommend. Hope the garden area can open for dinners again in the future.

What a brilliant establishment! From the French greeting, baked on site fare and excellent service, you are transported to another country - right on a Whakatane Main Street!

We called in here on Easter Friday and bought a ham and cheese roll, almond croissant and a slice of lemon tart to have for a picnic lunch at Ohope Beach. We didn't even make it out of the cafe, as the smell of coffee...(which I drink rarely) was so enticing we ordered coffees and ate the almond croissant out in the courtyard! We returned the following day for brunch but a lot of our favourites were sold out. However we still enjoyed the Eggs Benny croissant and Breakfast Croissant, plus a slice of almond tart. We also bought some hot cross buns. We returned on Easter Sunday for more lunch supplies (the same as Friday) and again loved the food. The staff were all so welcoming, greeting everyone with a cheery "bonjour!" I hope to return to Whakatane to live one day and this place will be my regular!More

I was looking for something to buy for breakfast this morning but I'm not a fan of McD's. I also don't like panini's from cafes because I find that they load up the front and there's no filling on the rest. I got a takeaway...breakfast croissant, heated. It was delicious and packed with ham, egg and relish. I will definitely be getting them in the future when I want a treat or am running late :) I also want to go back on the weekend so I can enjoy the cool atmosphere.More

A quick lunch all 3 of us ordered seafood chowder, there was a bit of a wait for the food, but they did all arrive at the same time. The weird thing was the chowder, while very tasty was heat level of just tepid ....We then reviewed the menu to say under the title a mention of 22 degrees, so we are assuming this is the temperature it was intended to be served at. As in the title, this is our fault for not reading the menu properly but we did find it not that pleasant to eat at that temperatureMore

We have only recently started visiting Whakatane. We love the atmosphere of L’Epicerie, seems all the friendly staff are French. The croissants are fresh and very good. This will be a regular stop in the future

This pastry cafe is worth a visit. There isn't a huge selection but the quality options they do have are enough. The chocolate custard croissant is delicious. We will come back from Tauranga again solely for that croissant.

We tried to go for breakfast because of the reviews, but sadly they were closed when we arrived at 09:30 yesterday (Sunday). The Trip advisor said they were open!

Needed a coffee break and stopped here - friendly staff and the place looks very clean and is very French in decor. Our coffee's arrived and one of our party immediately knocked her long black over. One of the male staff in the kitchen noticed...immediately and rushed out with a cloth and made sure that nobody had been burnt/splashed. They then replaced the coffee free of charge - great and caring service. For that alone we'd go back (the looks of the cabinet food could also make us want to try again). RecommendMore

Consistently good, we always visit this small cafe when we stay in Ohope. Love the almond croissants and Noble & Savage loose leaf teas. Cabinet food is super fresh. There’s a second location in Whakatane too which is larger. Quick service with a smile. 10/10
