My wife and I are visiting Coromandel Peninsula and had plans to dine at the Pepper Tree - and loved it so much we came back the next night! Located under a beautiful Pepper Tree, the atmosphere is a lovely dining spot. The server, Sylvia, was excellent; sharing information about the items on the menu. Sometimes a server just serves their purpose, but we found Sylvia engaging and delightful - she added to our experience! On night one we had an entree of the delicious green lipped mussels, followed by a warm vegetable salad and fish and chips. Night two we had a Ika Mata- Tuna entree followed by the grilled tuna and lamb main dishes. Everything was excellent!! We highly recommend this restaurant when visiting Coromandel. You won’t be disappointed! And if you get lucky, Sylvia will be your server!

All five meals were 10/10. A TASTE SENSATION! Lamb and calamari meals were so tender and juicy, with a great selection of vegetables. We also had raw oysters, fish 'n' chips and waffles, all done to perfection. The sauces and dressings were amazing.

Nothing to say about the welcome, very friendly, nor about the terrace, very pleasant. On the other hand, the quality of the dishes really leaves something to be desired. The seafood (oysters and mussels) was OK for those who like large sizes, however. But the seafood casserole (that's not the term used in the menu) had more vegetables (carrots and potatoes!) than seafood; just a few small pieces of shrimp and mussels of non-existent flavor. Given the reputation of the establishment, we can only be disappointed.

All orders are taken from an IPad on your table. We were 2 people. 1st main course arrived when starter wasn’t finished 2nd main course arrived 20 minutes later No customer service whatsoever, waitress blamed the electronics for delay…but didn’t offer any compensation when we complained. Oysters were good but fish & chips ordinary and spare ribs tasted as if dripped in jam. Our worse experience in NZ… A surcharge of $5 is applied if you pay from your table (not applied if you go to the counter) but not mentioned .

Went in on a Sunday at the start of June for some lunch. Only a few people around. We had to order on some e-tablets that we did not find easy, probably our fault. We kept asking the waitress how to order, would have been much quicker if she had just taken the order. Food arrived, it was ok, I ordered fish and chips, surprisingly it came with very large chips like wedges. One of our part had ordered chips with her tacos, we had to ask for them as they had forgotten them. Food was ok, fish was really nice. But service was not great on a slow day, what would it be like if they were packed?

Service was cold from arrival, ordering is done via a tablet. Drinks were quick to come out but food was not. Food was good (pizza and tacos) but chips were undercooked and a bit soggy.

Typically dining in small town NZ you have to sometimes lower your expectations when eating out. This wasn't the case with Pepper Tree. Food and drinks were awesome, and super accommodating front of house and kitchen staff (one of our group is a Celiac). Large sheltered outdoor area was perfect for outdoor summer dining. Highly recommend.

The service was prompt and friendly and the food was upmarket pub grub that was very tasty and well presented. The meals are large but the staff are happy for you to split a main and/or an entrée between two which makes it much more economical. Highly recommended.

Carol and I had a very-very nice meal at the Pepper Tree. There were not many diners, early Monday evening and getting into the off season, but they had sufficient very friendly waiting staff to look after us and the kitchen was operating at 100%. We started with sharing Dumplings, in a spicy broth, as an entrees, a must to be tried. Carol choose the Lamb Fillet and I had (once again, can not resist it) Pork Belly. Both were excellent. And it was the best Pork Belly I have ever had. It was great!! A glass of wine and a beer totaled just over $100. A great meal, nice place, and at a reasonable price.

We ate dinner here during our travels round the Coromandel Peninsula. Service was good and we given seating on the veranda. The restaurant was surprisingly busy and a steady flow continued during our meal. My wife chose the chowder and enjoyed it. I had the BBQ ribs - the sauce was a little on the sweet side but I rated the meal as a good one. Coromandel is a lovely little town and you can enjoy a good meal at the Pepper Tree whilst watching the daily activities in the centre of town.

After a long drive from Bethells Beach, getting caught up in a rainstorm through Auckland and a traffic accident diversion on the SH2, we were glad to just pull up outside the restaurant for some lunch. We'd eaten here before many years ago and had enjoyed the experience so had high hopes. Thankfully by then the rain had gone and we were able to sit in the courtyard garden, near the giant pepper tree which gives the place it's name. We both ordered fish & chips which were served goujon style in a very light and crisp batter, together with chunky chips, fresh salad and tartare sauce ($25 p.p.). A glass of Dog Point Sauvignon ($12) and a zero alcohol Heineken ($7) helped wash it down. Excellent lunch. Service from a mature gent was very pleasant. Note that in keeping with many places in New Zealand, there is a 2.5% charge when using credit or debit cards. Total cost $71/£35. We liked it so much we decided to have dinner there later however when we arrived it was fully booked so we reserved a table for the following night. We'd worked up an appetite for dinner the following day by completing the 10km Coromandel Coastal Walkway - very scenic. Our table was on the verandah however it was a little cool for our liking so we moved indoors, where in contrast to the previous evening, there were plenty of tables available. Although lacking in atmosphere (by the time we finished at 9.30pm the restaurant was empty) we enjoyed the meal. For mains we both had Angus Steaks served with Dauphinoise potatoes, fresh vegetables and tomatoes ($40 p.p.). The steaks were very tender and good quality meat and to accompany them we each had a glass of Pinot Noir ($13) which was a good match. We followed this with Cheesecake for my wife and Sticky Date Pudding for myself ($14 p.p.) - both dishes were very tasty. Service was friendly enough and the total bill, including the 2.5% surcharge, was $137/£68, which we thought was reasonable. It seems that despite the lapse in time since our original visit the restaurant still maintains its decent standards. We visited in March 2020, prior to the Covid-19 lockdown.

The food at Pepper Tree was ok but we were appalled to see that the very most important thing to look after their patrons was not happening. Customer after customer walked in to the restaurant masked against the current Covid surge in NZ but the staff had NO masks at all, let alone a medical grade mask. Under the current Orange level in NZ ‘ Public-facing workers at indoor hospitality venues must wear a medical grade face mask.’ Obviously Pepper Tree thinks this unnecessary. I would call it uncaring. Not good enough.

What a shame! Peppertree USED to be the buzz of Coromandel town, although now, its overpriced and uninviting. If you want to spend an exorbitant amount of money for a bismal amount of food, then you'll love this place! I had the pasta - Pesto in it was awful, too much garlic, greens large and chunky and too much oil. Previously, when ordering the ribs you'd get atleast 8-9 bones, this time only 4 bones, 5 chunky bit of potato and miniscule, undressed salad! For $32! Definitely won't be returning, better value down the road at Umu.

Highly rated allegedly so made a stop for an early dinner. This is what annoys me most, appalling customer service. The place was empty but because tables already reserved for hours ahead, we had to sit outside. Dealing with people who couldn’t care less drives me to despair but what do you expect nowadays. We would have easily spent $100 bucks and more but one of three staff playing with their phones decided otherwise. I think I am getting too old. Enjoy…….
