Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We ate here two nights, having enjoyed our meal the first night so well. We went to the smaller location, not the one near the mall. The food is authentic, and straightforward and well priced. They accept credit cards and dollars as well. The service on the second night was quite a bit slower we thought they forgot us completely, but eventually it all appeared for another meal.

We liked it so much we ate here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The casados (Costa Rican large-plate meals) are huge and delicious – we couldn't even finish everything. They give you a huge maduro (plantain) instead of just one little piece. You can dine outdoors on the patio or inside, and at sunset the views are great since the restaurant is on the 2nd floor. The décor is very appealing as it highlights traditional Costa Rican culture. The service is very attentive and the restaurant is super-clean. And the prices are unbelievably low. The menu is extensive – something for everyone here, but we recommend the grilled fish casado. The corn tamal (our second visit we got one casado and one corn tamal and had plenty of food) was good too. As I'm writing this review from home, I'm wishing I could be having dinner there tonight. Enjoy!

You know when your sat looking at the menu trying to work to figure out what to have. It was easier to look round the room at the various meals everybody was eating and say " I would like that meal please " I wasn't disappointed at all, well cooked and presented nicely. Lovely food and great service

The place is really mediocre, among all the things we ordered some of them came burned (sweet plantains, chorreada, eggs), we also ordered rice and shrimps that it was completely disappointing, it was a mix of hard rice with a bunch of soy sauce and 5 small shrimps for around 5000 colones. The food and the service were in general very pour. If I were you I will stay away of this place.

My wife and I decided to eat at Sabor Tico after we were back from our hiking tour for the whole day. We were disappointed from the minute we sat down but we were so tired to look for another restaurant. It looked like they were not so enthusiastic about their own business. We had much better food in other places in Downtown Santa Elena. Rice and beans, fried plantain, and either chicken, beef or pork is the main dish anywhere you go in Costa Rica. So the only thing which can make it different from place to place is the quality of the food which was so poor at Sabor Tico. The service was also not so good either. The waiter left us through the entire time we were there without asking us if we needed anything. A general rule of thumb, always choose a restaurant with lots of customers and even waiting time before you can be seated. If I'm in Monte Verde Costa Rica again, Sabor Tico will be my last option.

This restaurant was located near our hotel and since it advertised as offering traditional Costa Rican food we thought we would give it a try. We liked it so much we went there twice. It truly is Sabor di Tico, the food was super flavourful and well prepared. It is not as expensive as the other “tourist restaurants’ in the area but not as cheap as a typical Soda. Service was efficient and friendly. No problem if you cant speak spanish.

This was our second time eating at Sabor Tico after a visit in 2014 and it lived up to our fond memories. To my knowledge, this is the best option for reasonably priced authentic Costa Rican food around Monteverde. The casado plates were excellent. I would note for vegetarians that the veggie casado includes a fried egg so if you would like it prepared differently you would want to note this when ordering. The quality of the main dishes overshadowed this, but we ordered a chips and guacamole appetizer which was underwhelming in the number of chips and the guacamole tasted more like out of a bag than freshly prepared.

After reading all of the great reviews, we sadly left disappointed. I had the chicken fajitas and they unfortunately tasted like they were made with a store bought fajita seasoning packet. One friend ordered the empanadas and they were quite greasy. My other friend ordered the casado and said it was slightly above average. However, service was friendly, prices were reasonable, and the mango milkshake I had was delicious. I’d go back and get another one of those!

Trip adviser is definitely off on the average price. I would give it $$ to $$$. Skip the Arroz de La Casa. It was really dry. We felt like they use this dish to get rid of extras from the day before. Service was also very slow and there was no other customers there and they had plenty of staff.

I had the chicken Gallina (the aunts recipe dish). Chicken came out with barely any sauce and the chicken was so dry it was tough to cut let alone eat. Friend got the fajitas which were ok but felt the sauce tasted more like ketchup. Servers were disinterested so neither good nor bad. Left still hungry and disappointed.

Our birdwatching guide for Curi Cancha recommended this little restaurant as a great place to get good Costa Rican cuisine at a reasonable price. We’re so glad he did because the food was delicious and inexpensive plus only a 5 minute walk from our hotel, Monteverde Lodge and Gardens. Indoor and outdoor seating is available at this upstairs location in the shopping plaza. We loved it so much we made 2 return visits. Try the rustic chicken….Delicious!

We were told by our local Zipline guide, that if we wanted local food to go to Sabor Tico. We totally enjoyed our dinner. We had the plantains pancakes French fries, that comes with 3 dipping sides. So different and so good. We also had a children dish. There was the fresh pineapple frozen fruit drink, and it was fabulous.

We went on TA recommendation. Although located in a mall, the view is great and the breeze on the balcony is welcome. Service is friendly. We had a stuffed soup (truly delicious) and a chicken by aunt’s-recipe with rice (chicken was too old).

We walked in for dinner, the place was probably half full. we ordered casados and something with french fries plus some drinks. Food was decent amount for the price considering how little you get for the same in the nearby town restaurants. It all tasted ok, drink were also good. Service was not that great and it does make a big difference in dining experience. Our server didn't bring out condiments as requested and we asked another guy who also didn't bring us ketchup so we borrowed from an empty table near by. Anything you ask for other than food, like an extra straw etc was just kinda forgotten or ignored and it was not that busy a place for servers to forget. Hence the rating.

If you want authentic, local Costa Rican food, this is the place to go. The casado is just like what ticos eat at home, and there's a great view of the sunset from the outside tables. This place is essentially in a strip mall, but don't let that put you off.
