Attended on a Thursday evening for dinner. We had scallops and the beef special to start both of which were excellent. I had the sea bass for main - very good and my son had the rib eye steak which was very poor to the extent we had to return it. The staff handled this well and provided complementary desserts. However I do think there is an issue with a change in meat supplier perhaps as the quality even of the replacement steak was not of the standard you would expect at the hydro and definitely not a high quality rib eye which again you would expect for ÂŁ26. The initial steak sent out and returned was more like an escalope incredibly thin and rather than medium rare was well done but when sliced looked grey!
The second steak as cooked medium rare and was at least twice the thickness of the previous one but still did not look like any rib eye we have had before.
Overall other than steak a good experience but would maybe not order the steak dishes until they revisit supplier.

Upon arrival we were greeted at front desk and asked for our details due to COVID-19 and they checked our temperature, once completed we were directed to the Orangery restaurant.
Food choice on menu was adequate and a bit pricy in comparison to other venues.
The food was okay but would only return if they reduced their prices or offered set menus.

We ate here for dinner twice and breakfast every morning of our stay and everything was lovely.
Dinner experiences were warm and welcoming and watching the procedures in place for Covid were reassuring. Tables were well spaced and all staff had either masks or visors.
Menu is lovely and my husband and I enjoyed several choices over both nights and everything was tasty and well presented.
Joanne Gilbert looked after us both visits and she looked after us very well. I would ask for her to take care of us on our next visit.
Breakfasts were a nice experience too. Narinder was always welcoming as were all the staff who sadly, I didn`t get their names, but were always greeted warmly.
The only difference with Covid for breakfast, there is no cold buffet. You can order continental items along with your tea/coffee then order your cooked items. It works well and as always we are impressed with the breakfast. I like being able to just choose one or two items and everything was well cooked and again well presented.
Whether it be breakfast or dinner, The Orangerie is worth visiting, you won`t be disappointed.

Staff cannot be faulted. They were very attentive. Starters were lovely. My wife had main course of Moules Mariniere in a white wine cream and shallot sauce which was overwhelmed with cream and no hint of white wine to be tasted. Overall far too cloying.
It was 6.45pm. Was this down to an inexperienced commis chef ? No excuse.
My main course langoustine tails in tempura. No bite, too mushy. No sign of freshness. Overall very poor and very disappointing.

This afternoon tea was a Christmas present from a friend that we decided to book when we were staying in Largs for a few days.We visited on a Monday in March it was busy. The afternoon tea itself was nice but the service was diabolical. We had to ask them if they would box our remaining cakes etc which wasn’t a problem but the girl took them away never even attempted to clear plates, cups etc. We ordered cocktails and drinks and they brought them after a very long wait and sat them down at table and still didn’t clear our crockery away. We finally got someone’s attention and asked them to take away plates etc. We shouldn’t have to do that. There did seem to be a lot of young staff but on the other hand there was what we took to be managers in suits and not one of them came near us and just seemed to be walking about doing nothing. We were really disappointed as it’s one of the worst places we have been to for service. I was really upset for my friend as she had paid good money for this present for us.

We wanted to give our friend an unforgettable experience for his birthday and chose lunch at the renowed Seamill Hydro. We certainly did receive the unforgettable experience but for all the wrong reasons!
As another reviewer in March 2022 mentioned, the food is good but the staff are clueless and have no idea how to provide good customer service.
1) Had to wait 15 minutes to order our starters and mains. For our desserts, we had to ask for the desserts menu and then had to ask again to order.
2) After each course our cutlery was taken away but not replaced. So food arrived but we had no cutlery to eat it. Had to ask for cutlery.
3) Empty glasses were left on the table. At one point there were so many empty glasses there was no room for our food. We had to ask for the empty glasses to be taken away.
4) One member of our party ordered the Vegan tofu ramen noodles. When it arrived it had no tofu!! We raised it with the Manager? (guy in a suit) who then had to speak to the chef and on his return he advised that they had no tofu (supply problem!) so decided to substitute the tofu with cauliflower!
We were not advised at the time we ordered that they had no tofu and also was not asked if cauliflower would be an acceptable alternative. Pretty shocking when restaurants have to be very careful with people with allergies.
What really summed up our whole experience was the response by the Manager when he advised my friend there was no tofu. His response to my friend was "what do you want to do about it"?!!
5) The restaurant was not short staffed. In fact, some of the staff had time to gather in corners to have a chat and a laugh, whilst the staff that were not work shy were running around trying to serve customers. The Manager was no where to be seen!
Clearly the staff at this restaurant have not had any training in basic customer service and any desire to provide an acceptable customer experience.
Whilst the food was good, the customer service was so poor we will not be back and certainly would not recommend The Orangery to friends.

We ate twice in The Orangery on our recent stay and both evenings the food was beautiful.
I`m always wary of ordering steak in the UK, but the chef cooked my fillet perfectly, no complaints whatsoever. Lamb, chicken with haggis mash and lasagne were all impressive too. Decent wine menu which is appreciated.
Again, staff are lovely and make you feel welcome including Keira, Barry, Megan and Nicole all added to our experience.
Lovely place to visit with beautiful food and a lovely view too.

The food was mainly good apart from my lamb which was fairly tasteless. But the service was hands down the most inattentive I have ever experienced. The staff were hell bent on avoiding us, keenly cleaning tables but oblivious to the fact that we sat with desert menus for over 30 minutes etc. I don't think they approached our table once in the whole time we were there. Eventually we took to raising our hands, as if in class, and holding them up until eventually one of them was forced to come to our table. Bizarre. They were pretty nice when we had managed to get someone to take our order but totally clueless as to the needs of customers in a restaurant. I can only think that they employ very young girls who they don't bother training. After a while it became a total pain in the arse. Wouldn't go back.

Enjoyed a window table as requested and ordered both types of afternoon tea. Service was prompt and attentive when we arrived 3:30 and received the sandwiches and tea quickly after our drinks order however more than an hour and half later we had to ask for the cake stands and additional tea. Great as they weren't rushing us off the table but staff seemed to have a change over and obviously no one allocated to look after you once previous staff had left. Appreciate staff may be new and in training however there was plenty suit and tie staff over- seeing the restaurant and they should know the protocol!!!!

The starter was delicious and wonderfully presented
However it all went down hill from then.
The table service by the wait staff was abysmal. We had to ask for so many things, eg, the table to be cleared of empty glasses, cutlery for the meals, the desert menu..
For the main I ordered the vegan ramen of which tofu was a key ingredient.
The dish was served but I couldn't see any tofu at all. After asking the manager, and him checking in the kitchen, I was told they had no tofu and had substituted with cauliflower...without telling me. The chef clearly hadn't told the staff either.
This in itself is really bad. Would they have substituted someone's fish order with chicken without telling them??
The manager then asked me 'what do you want to do', and no apology was offered for serving me a dish that did not include a main listed ingredient.
I ordered another meal which was served to me in an extremely hot plate and I had to use a napkin to position the plate to eat from. I would have burned my hand if I had attempted to hold the plate.
The staff were clearly inexperienced and did not clear the table in a professional manner. I was worried that a plate would be dropped in my lap.
It really is a pity to give this restaurant such a poor review as the food was delicious but the service was terrible and the staff couldn't have been less attentive. There also didn't seem to be anyone managing how the tables were being attended and the staff looked really disorganised.
The staff looked very young and some in their teens. I would not expect a restaurant serving such lovely food to be run by staff who clearly don't understand how tables and diners should be attended.
The service is just as important as the quality of the food, and my experience was very disappointing

This is truly special. Come for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, I come several times a month - a takeaway coffee and sit down brunch (the halloumi in the veggie breakfast is out of this world) have been my favourites. Very kiddy friendly too and when the sun shines nothing beats a table outside. Seasonal produce, locally sourced, fabulous team.

June 16th, something of a shambles really, having booked a week in advance, (with a confirmation received), we were on-route and 25 minutes before our reservation we received an e-mail advising that our booked slot had been put back! Putting this aside the food was good but the service was not, it was staggeringly slow and inattentive. We would undoubtedly have spent a further ÂŁ60+ if only anybody had noticed the empty glasses throughout the meal. Given the establishment was only 50% full this was more than surprising. Staff seemed totally leaderless and overwhelmed by the simplest request. It is the first restaurant of such apparent standing where I have waited 4 minutes from serving the first main to a party of 4, to the last main arriving. Very disappointing on what was meant to be a special occasion and we know that other diners around us were also unimpressed. Won't be returning anytime soon which is a shame.

Guest Relations Manager
Dear Reviewer,
I was very sorry to read about your experience.
Please be assured that we would never push back a reservation.
Having looked through our reports we think that the email you received may have been sent automatically by our system. It is sometimes necessary to move bookings from table to table before arrival, we think this happened with your booking but while dragging and dropping the arrival time of your reservation was adjusted by mistake. We are of course very sorry for this but wanted you to know it was not intentional.
Although the restaurant interior was not quite full our large outdoor terrace was, creating additional demand on both our restaurant and kitchen teams, of course this should never impact on our guests experience and I apologise that you found the level of service lacking. We are not aware of any complaints being made to any of our team yesterday and can assure you that we would have done everything possible improve your experience at the time should you have expressed your concerns.
I agree that it is a shame that you will not be returning anytime soon as we would love an opportunity to deliver to you the experience the vast majority of our guests enjoy and restore your faith in our restaurant.

We were staying at the Hydro for 3 nights over Christmas. We ate here Christmas Eve and Boxing night and we had lovely food and service on both occasions.
We opted for fillet steaks and the seafood medley both nights and all 3 meals were lovely. On the second night one of the steaks was over cooked and it wasn’t a problem to have it changed to another perfect steak. We were offered three complimentary drinks which we appreciated.
Staff are young, but they are all incredibly friendly and very helpful.
Amber, Rachel and Abigail were all very nice looked after us well.
The restaurant itself is beautiful and they do have some lovely menu choices and a decent wine list as well as cocktails.
Looking forward to our next stay at the Seamill Hydro and eating here again.

Going to a restaurant post-lockdown was not exactly worrying, more a step into the unknown. I booked a table for the Seamill Hydro's re-opening day and shouldn't have worried at all. On arrival there is hand sanitiser and free face coverings are available if you don't have one, these have to be worn in public areas. As you enter the Hydro, your temperature is also quickly taken with the minimum of fuss. These are odd steps for sure when going our for something to east, but these are odd times and the impression was they were simply doing everything they can to keep everyone safe.
Having been seated, and masks now removed, it was a perfectly normal excellent lunch, the food and service was the usual high standard. Every member of staff in the restaurant wore a visor, which was actually nicer than a mask as at least you could see who you were speaking to. The staff were excellent, from serving food and drink as normal, to thoroughly cleaning any finished tables. The Hydro have cut the table numbers to ensure proper distancing and any tables which were back to back, had full plexiglass screens to further separate them.
It all felt normal though, or as normal as it possibly could be in these strange times. This is a huge credit to the management & staff of the place. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Orangery.

Staying in the hotel, looking at the reviews i had to try it, & yes its worth it!! If i ever get the opportunity i have Scottish beef so the Ribeye was ordered, complemented with the most fantasic onion rings and side salad. Quite simply one of the best i have had & worth the 340 mile journey to get here. Staff very attentive during service but a little slow to get the bill, but what nice surroundings to wait in. i really want to return in "The summer" & light nights the views must be spectacular. 6 stars.
