Excellent food - beef fillet, lamb tenderloin (that melted in your mouth), heirloom tomato salad and beef tartare - accompanied by excellent local wines (especially those by Maude, the onsite winery) and served in a friendly, timely manner. What else can you ask for??

Max. Max Max. We love Max. He guided us through the menu and gave us the perfect food and wine combinations every step of the way. When it comes to fine dining we want to unlock “core memories” of meals, places, and people we will...not forget AND this was one of them! I don’t know what to recommend you on the menu because EVERYTHING was so incredible it’s hard to choose. Go with what you like and in-doubt ask the server or how the chef likes it. You get what you put it and you get what you pay for. THANK YOU!!More

Lovely restaurant with absolutely wonderful food. We had the "cranky" goat cheese with vegetables, the market fish, and the pavlova for dessert. All paired with great wines. This meal was perfection, and a lovely interlude. Highly recommend.

My wife and I had a wonderful Sunday evening meal at Bistro Gentil. The food and service were exquisite. The atmosphere was perfect, not too loud, nice music but at a proper volume. The highlight of the evening was the excellent food. The menu was...short but everything we were ordered was impeccably prepared. My wife and I both ordered the fish entree which was brill with a cauliflower purée. We also ordered a couple of other mains and an appetizer which were delicious. Great wine selection. Highly recommended, best meal we’ve had in New Zealand so far.More

We dined at Bistro Gentil on Sunday 18th February, and it was an amazing culinary experience. The French Onion soup was very tasty and rich, but this was surpassed by the best venison dish we have ever eaten. Subtle flavours abounded, but only enhancing the...amazing taste and quality of the meat. Lastly the plum tart was a stunning finale. There are some good restaurants in Wanaka, but in our opinion, none came close to emulating the cooking skills on evidence here. If you are in Wanaka and love your food, this is a must destination. The staff were great and the chefs passion absolutely shines through.More

Really great place. We loved the location very much. Friday night and lots of locals there. Very friendly staff. Food tastet exquisit. Wonderful wines. It is a small place so you do have to make a reservation. And it is a bit out of town.

We came here because of the good review but was very disappointed by the terrible service. The waitress with curly ponytail serving us this evening probably shouldn’t be working in the service industry. She was rushing us to order the food when we first sat...down. Every table received a jar of water but because we did not order alcohol she did not bring the water jar to our table even after we requested it. She rarely came to check on our table and when we tried to get her attention by waiving at her a few times she just ignored. At the end I brought her the attention to refill us water on my way to the washroom. She came 10 minutes later and still did not bring us any water until after we ordered the dessert. Their onion soup was good. Their fish and venison, and desserts have appealing display but tastes average.More

We had high expectations for our meal here, and Bistro Gentil delivered on them. We did the works. I had french onion soup, steak, and a canele for desert. The steak was brilliant-perfect quality thick fillet, cooked exactly as requested. Blue cheese sauce, potato dauphines...with an onion caramel and onion jam, washed down with a glass of Cote du Rhone. And all with a view to the majestic lake and mountains of Wanaka. Highly recommended.More

We had an absolutely lovely dinner at Bistro Gentil. The service was good and the food was fabulous. We had the French onion soup, both croquettes, oyster, green salad, carrots, seafood dish and steaks——all prepared beautifully. The wine was good (not great). The setting is...beautiful, too. We definitely would return if we are in Wanaka again.More

We had dinner here and it was super! Up on a hill with views out to the lake and across from a golf course. Beef tartare , fish and sorbet with local wine. Delicious meal with great friendly service.

Great location . Good wine. Service standard but food worst in our experience in New Zealand - esp. For among the high end restaurants. Everything was overpowered with mayo type sauces and too salty. Minute crab appetizer tasted more of fried batter stick than crab....French onion soup good. Main meal of lamb - so much mayo sauce that couldn’t taste lamb the way we should. Side dish of veggies again doused in mayo sauce - lost taste here again. Really disappointed . Compared to other many locations in New Zealand , very disappointing and cannot recommend . Liked other local lunch places better in beautiful Wanaka! Recommend to pull back on the very overwhelming sauces!More

Outside of Wanaka but worth the drive up. Great view across the golf course to the lake and the mountains beyond it. Food was very good but on a busy night this restaurant can get quite noisy. If it is a quiet night, this would...be a great choice for a romantic dinner while watching the sun set.More

Lovely French restaurant on a hilltop. Probably our best meal in NZ. Energetic noise level vs. the quiet candlelight affair I would have expected. Our group had fun dining here enjoying thoughtfully prepared food and good wine. I didn’t pay the tab so I can’t...comment on value but this is probably considered a fine dining experience in Wanaka. There’s enclosed patio at the front of this restaurant. I’d try to get a seat in there next time, better views. Service was very attentive. All 12 of us enjoyed everything we ordered so it’s hard to say what I’d recommend after only a single visit but there’s a goof chance you’ll find something good on the menu when you go. And you should goMore

The restaurant is in a great location overlooking the town, with easy parking. The tables are well spaced for easy conversation and the service was quite excellent, polite and well informed. My wife has a garlic allergy but nothing was a bother and lots of...options were made available with no fuss. We all agreed that the menu had great variety and local interest, and the food was beautifully cooked and presented. Maude wines are hard to beat and reasonably priced. Just a memorable evening and highly recommended.More
