Amazing little family business and the best Indian food I've ever tasted

I know people usually like to write either scathing or over the top reviews, but truly, I have to be over the top! This was honestly the best Indian I've ever tasted. I usually go for the Palak Paneer, and at other restaurants it's always been bland and tasteless. Ashraf's was full of flavour, a perfect medium spice and a healthy serving. My partner bought the Butter chicken and said it was also one of the best dishes he's had - usually the butter chicken can be borderline sweet with small pieces of chicken, however Ashraf's dish had large pieces of chicken in a delectable sauce. Couldn't find a fault. Delicious. It was also charming to eat at what truly is a family run business, no fuss serving (none of this over the top chatter from wait staff trying to be your best friend). Loved it. We won't eat at another Indian in Wanaka again. See you soon!

Family-run Indian restaurant

My husband and I visited last night. We were lucky to get there when we did, as soon after, it was full. The restaurant is tiny, but so cosy and nicely decorated. The lovely waitress (I think owner too), was a gem. She was busy but so efficient and kind. The food was brilliant. We had a popadom platter, a vege curry (made vegan) and a butter chicken. The mains come with plain rice. We ordered two naans too. All the food was excellent. No complaints. This place deserves to do well. Both the chef and the waitress (the two owners I think), worked very hard and made our evening perfect.

Wonderful People with delicious food!

We ate here for most of our days in Wanaka. The food was delicious and the portion size was very generous and very reasonably priced. The owners of the place are such beautiful people very kind and lovely. They were so welcoming, they made us feel right at home. Will highly recommend.

Food and customer service seemed to be in a tug of war to win the title of "worst experience"

Tired after a long drive from Cromwell, we wanted to have some Indian food. We were there two weeks back with a little infant. The restaurant was almost empty so we politely asked for a bigger table as the table she gave us was very congested and not enough space to put the baby capsule and we parents sit and eat. The lady rudely said that we could not have the bigger table incase if a bigger crowd comes in which was understandable. I wish the way she responded was friendlier. While she asked everyone around how the food was she simply did not care to even ask us. We felt she was discriminating us as she happily chattered with the other races but did not care to talk to people of her own race Food : We asked her what is the best she would recommend us ( as we wanted to try their specials and we were not from Wanaka) she simply said that there is nothing like best and we had to choose our food quickly as she was a bit impatient as if she did not want to talk us ! Finally we ended up with Chicken Tikka where the price was not worth the taste nor the quantity. Chicken Dhansak seemed to be like a lab experiment where chicken curry base and mixed curry base were mixed to create the dish. Pulao/Pilaf that looked and tasted like friend rice ( absolutely no flavor). No value for money. Our experience would have been better and i would have given a slightly better review had we had a better customer service. I truly wish that this doesnt happen to any one in the future.

Best Indian in NZ - like a home cooked meal

Every time I’m in Wanaka I head straight to Ashrafs. I’ve travelled in India a lot and eaten my fair share of Indian takeaways and Ashraf’s is the best I’ve had in Nz. It’s literally a home-cooked meal with husband and wife team cooking and running front of house. Sometimes I don’t feel great after an Indian takeaway but not Ashrafs. Dal Makhani is special. I was disappointed to see a negative review of Ashrafs - I don’t believe it’s possible to have a bad experience here. Clearly people who work hard and care about their food. Enjoy!

We have been in NZ for 5 months now, and this was our best dinner to date. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was amazing. The family running this restaurant are such gracious, kind people and made us feel comfortable and welcome right away. Highly recommend Ashrafs! I only wish we had found this place sooner :)

True representation of Indian cuisine.

Best curry so far in New Zealand I’ve tasted. We ordered a Prawn Madras & a chicken Kashmiri style curry both dishes were cooked to perfection. Full of flavour & a true representation of Indian / Kashmir cuisine. Breads & rice delicious too. Highly recommend this restaurant who run on a small team of Husband & wife.

Incredible and authentic Indian food in Wanaka!

We had a great meal here while in Wanaka - it was incredible to get such authentic Indian cuisine while on the South Island in New Zealand at this family-owned restaurant. Our server was very kind and helpful and, of course, the food was amazing! We recommend the vindaloo, korma and the naan!

We liked it so much we visited again

We have dined here twice over the past week. The first time as a family of four, second as a couple. We enjoyed our meals so much we returned a second time. First time we started with the poppadum and mixed platters, this was sufficient for the four of us to share. We then had an assortment of curries. I liked how the server provided more rice and checked in with us. On our second visit we arrived late and jumped straight to mains. Once again we had very tasty food. We recommend this curry house, tasty food and reasonably priced. I liked listening to the lady sing after everyone had gone. Thanks very much for your hospitality.

🤩 Amazing food and service

We've tried to have a meal here before but being pressed for time couldn't get a table as it was busy. So had another attempt tonight. Glad we did. What fantastic service and delicious food! Still a very busy evening with obvious support from locals, we had more time on our hands. We need ent have worried with speedy, efficient and very knowledgeable service and fabulous, delicious and authentic food. Highly recommended. You won't be disappointed. A truly authentic Wanaka family business.

We had beef rogan josh, chicken tokja massala and vegetable korma . All well cooked with care . Good wine list at fair prices . You wont be dissapointed. Highly recommended

Too busy for a takeaway order. Very disappointed after having a great meal here a few months ago. I was even planning to go wine tasting down the way and wait an hour for the meal but that was not even an option. I was turned away right when I asked for takeaway.
