From the moment we walked in we were welcomed and treated with the utmost professionalism by every staff member. Quick and easy drinks and ordering saw the BEST cheesy garlic loaf we’ve ever had, along with delicious and clearly very fresh Blue Cod Goujons to kick start our experience. Once finished, the Beef Fillet and Lamb Backstrap were delivered for mains. Juicy, tender, perfectly cooked, complimented with al dente seasonal vegetables and well balanced jus, these mains really are worth their weight. As an ex 5-star resort chef I would have been proud serving this to our guests, well done Trout, perfect on all fronts and positive vibes to boot! We will definitely be back when we return to Wanaka.

We called into Trout after arriving in Wanaka quite late on Matariki night. The thing that attracted us in the display menu outside was the affogato, one of our favourite deserts but rarely found on menus. We were shown to our table by a friendly staff member and given menus. Being in the region where blue cod is the fish of choice and from the Waikato where this fish is rare, we both ordered this dish. We also ordered the special of raw Bluff oysters that came with a slice of lemon and a shallot and vinegar dressing. The oysters were divine and probably the best oysters I have eaten. The beer battered blue cod was fantastic with the home made tartare sauce, salad and delicious fries. And the affogato, as expected, was delicious. I had the tiramisu at Moana's recommendation and my wife had baileys.
If you like simple food done superbly and happen to be in Wanaka, then duck into Trout and say hi to Moana and her staff.

We walked in and the staff were very helpful in finding a table
We had the special of the day - Bluff oysters and they were fresh and delicious. We then followed with battered cod and roast vegetable salad and both were well cooked. Really enjoyed them both.
The staff were friendly despite being rushed off their feet. Thank you for making it a great night

Terrible! Rude staff. No table service. When not busy this should be an option… burgers $27 - 1 piece of measley fish, hardly any chips, soggy lettuce sand the end of a tomato 🙄. Took half hour to get any food. Not busy. Waitress pointed to a table at the end and said “get your own cutlery” no sauce, no service, no care. Such a shame as the bar next door we could see had attentive waiting staff who were taking care of their customers. Next time go to lake bar.

We have had dinner at Trout before, the last time was under previous management.
This time we decided to order the same dishes as before. A steak ($44), and an open top fish pie ($35). My wife asked, for dietary reasons, for the potato with the steak to substituted. Her request was for more of the type of vegetables that accompanied the dish, or other vegetables that were available. She was told no substitutions, but she could order a side dish at her cost. This is the first time in a New Zealand restaurant, at this price point, that she can recall, that her request for a substitution has been turned down.
The fish pie was OK, but a bit much mashed potato as a base.
When paying the bill for the two dishes and drinks we questioned why they would not do a substitution and were told “vegetables are expensive”.
A check of the nearby supermarket the next day showed that potatoes were about the same price as a number of other vegetables and other seasonal vegetables were reasonably priced.
It appears Trout has no interest in good customer relations.
A pity, they missed out on the sale of two deserts and two coffees.

We came here for the first time. Lovely table and service from new French waitress. But food was little a disappointing as my fish pie came without prawns ( this was quickly corrected ) and found a couple of bones in fish. Apologies were made and kitchen staff informed but this could perhaps have been dealt with better from a customer satisfaction point of view.

This was the worst evening spent with family from Melbourne AU. The food was so poorly presented and tasted as poor. The calamari, we had to scrape the pile of batter off to find the little squiggles of something that didn’t look like calamari. The Cajun chicken wings was dry & tasteless. The pork ribs with layers of fat was tasteless too. The worst ever. Send your chef to Taranaki to learn what quality cuisine and hospitality service.

Sorry but the food was not great. Not enough seasoning or something. It just didn’t quite work. The open fish pie was too creamy, too much mash and only a few very small 3 cubes of salmon and cod and 3 prawns and was Very expensive for what you got. The linguini on the other hand was very generous but lacked sauce and seasoning and something. The pan fried cod sat in a bowl of soup on top of braised vegetables. Weird. And again lacked something. Service was ok. View was ok but only if you get a table near the front. Overall we thought it was overrated and way too expensive.

I'm sorry to read this Jacquie and it's a shame that all 3 meals were not up to your liking.
We take pride in looking after our diners, especially if they are not happy with their meals.
Our service is excellent and yes if you are lucky enough to get a front window, seat the view is beautiful.

There are some fine things to do in Wanaka and having dinner at Trout is one of them. Don't expect to walk in and sit down as bookings are essential.
We've had other positive experiences here, but last night was incredible. The lovely French waitress had a smile a mile wide and really went the extra mile to make sure our dining was memorable.
But, the eye fillet steaks were staggeringly good. I had mine with the wine jus, although I was toying with ordering the mushroom sauce. Cooked to perfection at medium rare. Veggies cooked to perfection and a smashed potato that was crispy on the bottom.
Topped it off with a creme brulee and a chocolate mousse. Yummm. This is the kind of dining you'll remember.
Last time I had the Shrimp Linguini. Yep, equally as good.

Biggest night in wanaka, 'show weekend' and we were treated appallingly. 9 oclock at night about 30 patrons who were sitting in the outside tables not knowing each other were refused to be able to buy drinks in rounds. We were told they would only serve individually so they could check if people were intoxicated. This was ridiculous, some of our group had just dined and decided to have a nightcap with friends who were seated outside. This too was refused and once people started to complain 'She' shut up shop! So 20 plus people moved to the speights bar to enjoy and hour or so. Nobody was kicked out of there for intoxication.Shame really because it was a nice quiet place to catch up with friends, but won't be back to support this business in the future!

I don't like giving negative reviews, but this needs to be sorted. Very disappointing, not surprising very little local patronage, took hour and half to get our meals in what was virtually an empty restaurant. Meals had no taste, if the chef had left for the night you should have said, we could have gone somewhere else.

We came here with a group of friends one evening and had a meal. The starter took a long time to arrive, given it was only garlic bread, but was delicious. The mains were also good - portion sizes varied depending what you ordered but overall we were happy.
Service was friendly and attentive with offering more drinks.
We would have liked dessert but waited so long for the starter that we didn’t have time sadly.

Unfortunately the cheesy garlic loaf take's a little longer than most of the entrees and your feedback tells us we need to inform patrons of this - so thank you for your feedback. I will pass this on to our wonderful team.

Had a beef burger for lunch from trout, staff barely acknowledged us and the burger was literally the shittest burger I’ve ever had. At best it would be a $10 burger you’d expect from a lions caravan at a gypsy fair.. definitely not restaurant worthy.

They squeezed us in on a busy early January night for a great meal looking out over the lake. The menu had something for everyone in our group but was more interesting than the usual fare. Fish pie was delicious, prawn and chorizo pasta was enjoyed and the fish and chips were devoured. Top tip: get a garlic loaf …. amazing! Good selection of wines and beers.
It was a very busy night but the staff delivered great food and service.

Service was excellent, we were greeted with a friendly smile and given the option of where to sit so we sat outside with a lovely view of the lake. Our table had an umbrella up and despite it being very busy outside the area was clean and tidy. Our waitress offered us drinks right away which we appreciated and they were delivered a short time later (best not to assume who drinks beer and who drinks lemonade based on our gender ;) ) we ordered the mussels, fried chicken and chips to share and it was absolutely delicious! Our plates were cleared shortly after finishing which was excellent and we were kindly asked if we would like anything else. 4/5 rating only because the place lacks a little ambience - a little background music outside goes a long way.
