Great service, great menu, excellent setting and fine food and drinks. Twice! Might add that even when full service is quick and efficient maintaining a high quality.

We have eaten here in the past and it was excellent but tonight it fell short. Very busy and understaffed. Mind you the staff were very pleasant and looked after us the best they could but they were definitely short staffed! A 7 pm reservation...and we did not get our mains until 8:35. The appetizers came out quickly and they were good, bread and dips and the beef tartare. Then the wait. People who came in much later received their meals before us which was perplexing? We had the lamb rack(2), the orange roughy and the steak- nothing complicated. The fish and steak were good but the potato rosti on the lamb dish was way overcooked and dry! The lamb rack was okay but it was a bit overdone as well. The bottle of wine was excellent and again the staff were superb!More
Wow! So impressed with our meals here, our party of 4 ate here twice during our stay in lovely Twizel. Meals were all outstanding, delicious and good portions. The desserts are out of this world, amazing, handcrafted delights, the three of us that enjoyed dessert...raved about them. Service is very good, super busy night the second time we dined, our service was a little slow, but cherry serve person soon had our drinks and meals sorted - highly recommend, you will need to book, many turned away at the door, as fully booked on a tuesday!! Will be back in a flash when passing through!More
We had booked for a 6pm dinner. I ordered fish of the day, Orange Roughy with salad and my wife ordered Poppies Salad with chicken as an extra. I also ordered a 500ml bottle of sparkling mineral water and my wife, a glass of Sauvignon...Blanc. Table service was prompt and cheerful and the meals arrived in good time. The Orange Roughy and salad was underwhelming at best. The fish was served on baked or sauteed carrot, amongst other vegetables. Was the fish meant to be hot or cold? The salad contained shredded fresh carrot with an uninspiring dressing. Outcome, carrot done two ways! My wife thoroughly enjoyed her salad and chicken. As more guests arrived it became apparent that the cafe was woefully under-staffed. Despite the pressure the wait staff did exceptionally well. At one stage a kitchen hand, attired with a filthy apron, helped with table service. Considering the high-pitched menu prices, management of Poppies Cafe could give consideration to hiring more up-front staff and, ask themselves whether the food choices are suitably matched to the side salads or side vegetables. For a small town, it was great to find such a good restaurant. They clearly really cared about providing good food and drink. We really enjoyed it there, good value too, and will definitely go back if near Twizel again. Highly recommend it.
Wasn’t expecting the food here to be really good. Especially their desert is a must to order. Tried their desert for the first time cause was a bit hungry, and it turned out superb. We decided that we will get dinner the next day from...here and it turned out excellent too.More
Visited Poppies last night with a group of friends. The food was delicious especially the soup, local salmon and home made ravioli. The price was good too but the best part was the warm welcome and helpful service and advice from the staff. One even...got her car and drove me to the place I was looking for. Fantastic service. Thanks againMore
This is the best place to go for a meal if you're in Twizel. Great service. Husband had the fillet steak which he could't fault and I had the gnocchi which was delicious. We shared the Poppie's special dessert which was fabulous. A lovely place...to go.More
We had a nice time at Poppies - unfortunately weren’t told the kids waffles weren’t on the menu anymore and were surprised when pancakes came out instead of a waffle. Unfortunately the pancakes meal for children was really small - more expensive than the kids...toastie with much less food. Otherwise the meal was pleasant and service was great!More
A lovely surprise in Twizel. Delicious food, warm and cosy environment and excellent service. Can recommend all the mains - we had Beef Cheeks and Salmon. But can also recommend the lamb curry, fillet steak and fish and chips. The chocolate and mint fondant for...dessert was stunning .. with a delicious soft centre. Visited this restaurant as we were doing the A2O cycle journey. Fabulous and 10/10.More
Great menu, friendly service and fantastic food. This is one out of the box! Amazing quality restaurant for such a small town. Very good wine list as well. Highly recommend,
Visited for a late lunch as 2 of the other 2 cafes were closed on Sunday and the other didn't appeal at all!! Ordered a BLT and fries to share. Neither were anything special.
We went as a large family group Poppies was well prepared for us and the meals all brought out at the same time. Great variety, everyone very happy. Highly recommend!
Poppies is the best restaurant in Twizel. Warm and welcoming with great staff and service. An excellent menu based on local produce at reasonable prices. Lovely atmosphere and highly recommended.
We`re disappointed to see that NZ seems to have more tourists than it can handle. We walked into a virtually empty restaurant (a few people eating outside but more tables empty than full) and were told we're had to have reservations. Most restaurants usually like...turnover cuz the more customers they serve the more they make. Wish someone could explain the way things work in NZ! They are help wanted signs everywhere & apparently lack of housing for employees?More
