Had the goats cheese starter followed by the delightful Venison Pie, food was magnificent as was the service highly recommended. The starter was beautifully crafted, the venison pie was an amazing experience on a cold night with beautiful pastry top and a sumptuous stew of venison and seasonal vegetables. I finished off with a simple Affogato and Whisky. The service was exceptional and very friendly all the staff are so accommodating. They had a beautiful wood burner going, the restaurant is big and cozy and our waiter who was from Brazil was exceptional. They even accomodate day the local cat who slept on the sofa next to the fire. The prices were exceedingly reasonable for the high standard of their food, we had a wonderful Syrah from the Waipara region. If you are in the Mackenzie district this wonderful restaurant is a must for all travellers who enjoy fine dining

I organised a group of 18 to do the Alps to Ocean. We had 2 dinners and 2 breakfast in the private dinning room - ideal for a large crowd.
Everything was outstanding. We negotiated a set menu for $50 per head of mains and a cheese platter. The lamb rack is definitely my recommendation.
Staff were so friendly. And I'll definitely be back!

We've been bringing visiting friends and family for meals here and every single time our guests have been impressed especially with their lamb racks and steaks (and sticky pudding!)
Be advised that their Lunch Menu is very different from their Dinner Menu so if you are after your Lamb Rack fix, it's only available at dinner time.
Service is always quick and efficient though you may have to wait a tad longer at peak hours for your mains, but it's worth the wait.
Staff are cheerful and friendly too.

This was our 3rd visit to poppies and normally our “go to” place.
However this time we queued for 15mins to ask for a table to then get told we had to order there and then, we hadn’t seen a menu by this point.
More people came in after us and where given menus and taken to a table and there orders taken from the table....?!?
My flat white was the worst I have ever had in a cafe, we asked for gf bread with both our meals only one came out so had to wait again for them to change it, when we did eventually get our food the toast was still frozen in the middle!!! How this is possible I really don’t know! Overall we were so disappointed in a place that should and could be great, will not be visiting again.

I went to eat here and I was by myself. I am staying in the area for travel and I sat there 15 minutes at the table closest to the counter (where they put their orders in) and they did not come over and serve me. They just looked at me and never came over. They served other guests who came in after me but not me. I am 21 and I am aware that they check IDs if you look under 25 I saw the sign and I’ve shown my IDs at other places but I was beyond angry that they didn’t even ask to see it. I am assuming they just thought I was under 18 and didn’t want to tell me they wouldn’t serve me. Well I am over 18 and to make me just sit there until I decide to leave is just rude. I even talked to a server as she walked by and assumed after the conversation that she would come over and take my order or something. She never did and when they started taking multiple guests who came in after me I was done. This place has terrible service and honestly it was rude and I would
never recommend this place for its horrible service. It honestly turned me off of New Zealanders because they aren’t very hospitable.

We were staying in Twizel for 2 nights at an Airbnb and had asked our Host about a suitable place for lunch after we had travelled up for the day to Mount Cook.
It was close to 2pm before we arrived back in Twizel, so only had a short time to sample their lunch menu. The food was great and certainly a generous serving, the staff were extremely attentive and the atmosphere was very relaxing.
Please take the time to drop in for a meal at this nice cafe/restaurant. Certain to please.

This was the highest rated restaurant in Twizel so we headed here for our first meal and were blown away. Every single dish is stunning and delicious beyond words. It is worth every cent and was the best meal we had had in a very long time. The venison pie is divine and the pork belly is cooked to perfection, while the date pudding is a work of art that pleases the eyes as well as the stomach. Combine the wonderfully crafted food with the warm fire and even warmer wait staff and you have a winning recipe. This is truly a 6 out of 5 stars experience, and I cannot recommend this place enough.

We visited Twizel and checked out the online reviews before booking but we were still amazed by our meals. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed without being too intrusive. There wasn’t a huge selection on the menu but what they do provide they do extremely well! We enjoyed the bread starter to share; the NZ lamb and the fish special followed by the sticky date dessert which was ample to share. All in all an excellent meal and great staff.

Popular location - got last table for two when booking same day early afternoon. Very friendly staff and well cooked NZ style food. Good pace of service and choice of wine at reasonable price. We started with delicious crispy prawns with chilli and coriander dip. For mains my wife had fish of the day (salmon) and I had Canterbury Rack of Lamb which was really great with mustard crust, rosemary potatoes Rossi and beetroot chutney - very tummies. By this stage we were too full to try any of the desserts. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere with both interior and exterior seating. It was definitely good enough to go again. The final bill including wine was NZ$138

i met with friends for lunch in January. I felt welcome and enjoyed the relaxed vibes of this, restaurant, however iI was dissappointed with my choice of meal and didn't think it was value for money. I followed up with an iced coffee which was just beautiful and ticked all the boxes for a hot summers day

Food was very fresh, local and presented well in this casual but lovely restaurant. It was our first night in New Zealand and we thought it a little pricey but soon learned that for good food it was actually very reasonable. For a great meal in Twizel, this is the place to go.

We stopped here to refuel mid morning while cycling some of the mountain bike trails around Twizel. There are bike stands outside.
Poppies is just off the main highway so its an ideal place to stop for refreshments. It wasn't busy and the service was quick and friendly.

After our 2016 visit was unsure about stopping here again, but pleasantly surprised with great warm service, pleasant and clean Cafe once again with smiling staff.
We had the Big Breakfast and half serve of Pancakes with hot coffees, good portions pretty large plate of food for the Breakfast.
Called again on the way home for a light snack and coffees, as good as 3 days earlier - thank you

Our Air BNB host recommended Poppies and booked us in for the evening meal. Warm and friendly staff and although very busy, nothing seemed too much trouble. Food was excellent and the only problem was having to choose off a very varied menu.
Good value and efficient service with a smile.

A regular looking restaurant with a 5 star restaurant dishes to choose from. Fresh bread comes with hummus, pesto and tapenade dips. My steak was seasoned well and nicely plated. I asked the server for a red wine suggestion from New Zealand, which did not disappoint. (By the way, you can always ask for a tasting before you commit to the wine). Converse with the server. Some of them are backpackers working just for the season. Our server is from Michigan, USA. And she is staying until the ski season. One of the servers is from Slovenia and he is back because he likes Twizel.
