Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were looking for a place in Twizel for a regular full breakfast, which is not a buffet for an early start up to Mt. Cook NP; this is easier said than done on a Monday, because almost everything is closed on Mondays in this...town. Based on the information from their own website (where you can even download their regular-looking breakfast menu with eggs benedict, etc.), we expected to get an a la carte breakfast at the Mackenzie Hotel, but when we arrived we were told they only offer a buffet-style breakfast, nothing a la carte. So we left hungry.More

We had a drink as a group in the bar before dinner which was tasty and well presented. The whole salmon was laid in the middle for serving as needed. We also had a buffet breakfast which was adequate. The bar area definitely needs refurbishment.

We had dinner here on the 22 sept, unfortunately due to COVID they have dismissed all their staff and could not keep up with demand in their restaurant.

We stayed here with a tour group. The building is dated appearing, from 1960s or 1970s, it seems, and the doorknobs still use actual physical keys. The room was comfortable and clean. Our stay included both dinner and breakfast buffets, and actually both were better...than I'd have expected based on the dated appearance of the rooms. The inn is located within about a fifteen minute walk of a small shopping center and a couple of grocery stores, but the businesses close early, and we did not go into either one. I think the store selling alcoholic beverages was open a bit later.More

A large tourist hotel in Twizel. Quiet, Clean, Comfortable and warm. Comfortable King size bed and large room with big windows and door to balcony. You can enjoy plenty of fresh crisp air or a warm cosy room. The restaurant has great buffet food for...breakfast and dinner. A good bar with plenty of seating for meeting friends and chatting. Efficient friendly staff. Close to the town.More

We decided to try the restaurant buffet for supper. The staff were friendly and courteous. This is a small buffet that is overpriced but what we ate was good. Next time I would try another place out.

What a treat it was to stay at the Mackenzie Country Inn. It's a classy Hotel tucked away in the hide-away town of Twizel. Room was quiet and well kept. The evening buffet was one of the best ever. What a spread! Hot, amazing variety...to suit all nationalities and delicious. Superb!More

This place would have been lovely in its day - but sadly a little dated. Water pressure in our room was pathetic & there had obviously been a leak from the bathroom at some stage as the brown stain on the carpet stood out. The...open fire in the bar was amazing - however the bar shut at 9pm - this was disappointing. Food was average - little gluten free options. The man carving the meat at the buffet was 'stingy'!!More

This is a good hotel, the staff at the front desk not too friendly but otherwise the hotel is good. The check in process was long and check out process was even longer as the there was only one person who was more interested in...doing her filing first before serving customer. The rooms are clean and great. Location of the hotel is superb. I would recommend to The management that perhaps some training for thier front desk staff would be of benefit.More

Very dated, no air conditioning or fans in our room. A tiny electric heater next to the bed. Not sure how good it would be in winter. The dining experience was basic smorgasbord roast. The meat was tender but nothing else to mention. A large...noisy dining room suitable for a large group traveller.More

Saturday night in Twizel does not offer a great number of choices, so we decided to eat in. Luckily we had booked as the motel was full and there were several tour groups in as well. The buffet looked impressive and it was certainly popular,...but we went with the a la carte option. The rib eye steak was perfectly cooked and the lamb was very tasty. We had carried drinks in from the bar and avoided what appeared to a fair wait for drink service. The staff though busy were friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. Part of the enjoyment was the diverse range of patrons passing through during the evening.More

We ate at the evening $39 dinner buffet last Friday and Saturday nights. It was busy with groups on both nights, but it did result in meeting new people while line to get to the buffet station. The main focus of the buffet was the...popular carving station with roasted lamb, pork and beef. There was around 8-10 other side dishes on offer in the buffet, including some with meat in them, which I had to confirm with the staff. As a (fish eating) vegetarian I was disappointed that the only other dish apart from the vegetables or roast potatoes was a vegetarian pasta dish which was more pasta than vegetables. There were crumbed small Hoki pieces, but being fairly tasteless I felt that they were pre frozen. The saving grace was a separate salad bar with about six tasty fresh options there. The dessert table looked great, but was filled with sweet and rich treats. Even our traditional Kiwi pavlova I found too sweet and sadly the fruit salad was more canned than fresh. We had a curtained off dining area for our group and had no drink service on both nights although the staff seemed very busy yet accommodating. The bar area with a big open fire was a nice relaxed place to be and there was another adjoining lounge area which looked very comfortable to sit away from the bar and restaurant. We ordered a small bottle of 1 glass of wine, a small beer and 1 single vodka which was $30, probably reflecting the location of this Inn. I would recommend to the management that more vegetarian and vegan options be added to the buffet menu please, plus at least one more fish option, and perhaps a low sugar/fat dessert option if possible please.More
