Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We arrived without a booking, the staff could not of been more attentive, for a pub meal it had a great variety, fairly busy but staff took time to go thru special options and have a chat, meals arrived and OMG they were massive but...full of flavor and very quick to arrive. Couldn't go past this place for a good quality meal at a reasonable price.More

We had the ribs and they were pretty much unedible! Hardly any meat and what was there was a very cheap cut! No one asked during the meal how it was and so told the waitresses at the end, they seemed totally unbothered and did...nothing to apologise!More

A group of 5 of us went for an early dinner. The menu reads well and the waiting service is ok. The restaurant didn’t appear to be overly busy, but our meals took about 50 minutes to come out - and when they did, they...forgot one of the meals. We had to go up to the bar to enquire as to where the meals was. Oops, the chef didn’t count the right amount of meals (wtf??). So they brought us a complimentary garlic bread. Meal 5 arrived well after the rest of us had finished our meals. To give credit, where credit is due, the portions were a good size (big) and the food was delicious. But one lamb shanks came out with a side of white sauce, one didn’t. When the pork belly (meal 5) FINALLY arrived, the veges were stone cold. Pretty basic stuff but they couldn’t nail it. Would I go back?? Probably not.More

Popped in for dinner to this pub on a noisy Friday night. The bistro however was nice and quiet, we were promptly offered drinks and given a table. The meals arrived quickly and were delicious.

Our family of 4 rocked on up without a booking. Served by very polite staff. Lively setting. Food was very good. They even accommodated the fussy eater. Had the Thai green curry chicken which had a perfect mix of veg and chicken with the right...amount of heat. Lamb shanks were perfectly cooked and kids burgers were spot on. Definitely go back again next time we are in Twizel.More

Myself and a few cobbers popped in here for our tucker as we allways do when in twizel. My very beautiful wife was ravenous after a long day so we decided to go down for tea early. My lovely wife orderd the lambshanks bluecod meal and a...side of the garlic bread i allso orderd the blue cod meal. The nice young woman who serverd us was friendly and polite. We decided to eat in the bar area as there was some foofy on we wanted to watch. Our meals came out fast.My wife has a large apitite and is a very keen eater she quickly demolished her lambshanks and garlic bread loaf which she said was very good and quickly got stuck into her blue cod before it had a chance to go cold.the shanks were a good size as normally she will eat 4 shanks comftably but she found 2 were sufficiant. She said the cod was very fresh and very well cooked and i thought so too my very beautiful wife said it was very supple she enjoyed it so much she ate most of my cod before id had a chance but what i did manage to get i very much enjoyed. For pudding we orderd cheesecake and banoffie pie to share. It was a good size and my wife ate the whole banoffie pie and said it was lovely we went halfs on the cheesecake that was allso good.We very much enjoyed our meals and my wifes belly was full which we dont often find with most places. It is a friendly relaxed place with a nice vibe and my wife was happy enough here too and she is very fussy and hard to please.I wouldnt go anywhere else for food in the mckenzieMore

We had our evening meal here, the service was great. My husband had bluecod which was cooked perfectly served with fries and coleslaw, salad would have been preferable...but it is winter, he enjoyed his meal. I had marinated prawns, which is a starter but had...them as my meal would have prefered the crumbed scallops but they weren't available the prawns were very nice. It was lovely and warm on a cold Twizel evening!!More

Menu bragged about the Seafood Chowder. Said it was so good it would leave you wanting more. Ordered it and a pint of cider. 5 minutes later i had to chase cider up. The chowder. Well it tasted great but way too little of it.

Ate here while staying in Twizel. The staff were welcoming and right on the job. There is a good selection of dishes available for a restaurant in a small town. Patrons can sit in the bistro or in the adjoining bar. This place got busy...in the evening, especially the bar. The food was good, although the steak was over-cooked on 1 night.More

Visited here with friends on a busy rowing weekend. They had 4/5 waiting staff on, but we had to go up to the bar to order meal as we waited for 15 minutes to be asked for our order at our table and nobody came....One of our meals got forgotten about and the young waitress was really apologetic and gave a free drink to the customer. The older lady who was working was quite grumpy- perhaps she was having a bad day? Meals were all amazing & definitely couldn't fault them!! Came out in pretty good time considering how busy they wereMore

4 of us ordered the Big Breakfast. I ordered poached eggs with mine. They came a funny brown colour and raw. I sent them back to be sent another couple of raw disgusting eggs. We paid $18.50 each for the breakfasts, which said they came...with "ciabatta" bread, ours came with white sliced supermarket brought bread. After questioning this I got told that there is a "error" on their menu and that it comes with the toast. Surely I am not the first person to question this. Another aspect to the meal was a "Home-made Beans" they came seperate and to our surprise had beef mince in them, so was more of Nachos than a breakfast bean. Absolutely disgusting. I personally manage a cafe in Christchurch and would be embarrassed to serve food in that matter. Service was polite and probably the only enjoyable part. Not to forget the 45 minute wait for four meals.More

Our friends and us went here for dinner and the place was very busy which should have been a good sign. The ladies ordered the blue cod and us fellas had the bone in rib eye. The service was good and the plates were served...in an attractive manner. The cod was cooked okay and the veggies etc were okay as well. My steak tasted okay but being a ribeye I thought it would have been more tender?More

Chowder served in a Cob Loaf just goes right to my hips.....I mean heart. I love it. This one had heaps of great chunky fishy bits. I kept dipping in and finding more each time. My pet hate is having a mussel still in the...shell so I to half a point off for this. So how did this humble pub in the middle of the South Island score in the final wash up. 9.5/10 If you are ever in Twizel and like a good chowder get on down for a fantastic chowder.More
