Fantastic Indian food. I was surprised to come across an Indian restaurant in this small town, but viola here it was. After missing out the previous night as the place was too full and we didn't get reservation, we decided to go early the next night and boy I am glad we did.
The food is one of the best Indian food I've had in new zealand (other being Bombay palace in Queenstown). We had the paneer kadhai with garlic naan and dal tadka. The portions were perfect, both entrees came with rice and the garlic naan was full of garlic, very soft and well made. Not even one small part looked uncooked.
I would recommend this to anyone visiting twizel or mount cook to try this place out. One advice is to reserve the table in advance as they get very crowded and it's a small place.

A pleasant welcome when we walked in and shown to table water and menus without delay, this is how it should be done. The Butter chicken curry was so tender and not too spicy, the lamb Korma was melt in the mouth and the steamed rice perfect and the garlic naan was spot on.
The mango lassi was a sweet and smooth drink that goes well with these meals.
Great and friendly service from a well run restaurant. Definitely recommend a visit!

We went to this little gem on Sunday night, it’s a beautiful little restaurant and the customer service is the highest level. We had the dumplings to start with along with the Samosas and they were exquisite with some beautiful Nepalese dips. For the main I had a medium Chicken Jalfrezi and Naan bread the meal comes with rice. I have enjoyed Indian food all over the world and this little gem in Twizel is one of the best I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves great Indian Cuisine

I booked a table for two early in the morning. Arrived at 7.30pm and there was no table for us due to someone booking for a large number who evidently did not turn up. The waiter was apologetic and said we could share a table with another couple which we did after arguing that I booked a table and expect to have our own table. We ordered lamb sheikh kebab which we have often eaten at indian restaurants. When they arrived it was chicken very white insipid looking. Tasted like rubber, bland, overcooked and absolutely no flavour. Could not even taste chicken. asked the waiter where is the lamb and he said sorry we don't have. The waitress asked us why we did not like the kebabs I told her why and that we ordered lamb, which she replied lamb was taken off over a year ago as people complained that the lamb was dry. Well their chicken was like cardboard. Hate to think what their lamb was like. we ordered garlic naan rice and a chicken kathai which was quite nice. Although the garlic naan, could not taste garlic. Definately would not recommend this restaurant if you want tasty indian food

After reading the good reviews for this restaurant, my wife and I visited on 15 Jan 2020.
Here is a summary of our meal.
Chicken Bhuna: Tasty sauce but cheap meat used 5/10
Onion Bhaji: Made up of 90% gram flour with very little actual onion. Could not eat as very chewy 1/10
Garlic Nan: A very flat piece of bread that contained little garlic and was very oily 1/10
Rice: Asked to upgrade the free rice (boiled) that comes with the curry to a Pilau rice. Was told this would cost $10 extra, which we reluctantly paid. When the rice came, it was just boiled rice that had been dyed yellow (with Turmeric) and a few peas. Not Pilau rice as we expected and had paid for 1/10
Would not recommend.

They do both dine in and takeaway. Dining in is an extra $2. The portions are generous, you could split 2 mains between 3 people. The garlic Nan bread was excellent, and plenty of meat with the dishes. There is a corkage fee of $7. You can have the main as mild, medium, hot or super hot.

Stopped for dinner on the way through town and was pleasantly surprised. Tender lamb and chicken cooked in delicious sauces. Garlic naan was light and delicious too. It felt like the chef takes time over the preparation and cooking of the food. The service was superb! If you’re looking for a great Indian meal and service, in a pleasant environment i’d recommend you dine here.

We dined here on a Sunday. We had booked a table but had to wait for 10 minutes as they had a large crowd arrive. The staff were very apologetic about the delay, but it was understandable as they were flat out for the entire evening, doing takeaways as well as the eating-in crowd. The food was very tasty, basically Indian with a Nepalese twist. We had the chilli chicken and the prawn jalfrezi. The service was excellent, both front of house staff were ensuring all diners were looked after. We also had takeaways from here the next night. The food was delicious.

This place is a godsend. We made an impromptu 65 KM drive down from our accommodation in Mt Cook to this restaurant in Twizel after realising there were no viable dinner options in Mt Cook, and this couldn’t have been a better decision.
The food here is so good I could cry. We ordered the butter chicken ($24), the lamb shank ($28), the vegetable jalfrezi ($21), one plain naan ($4) and one cheese and garlic naan ($7) to share between the two of us. As we had just finished two walking trails on Mt Cook and it was also pretty late by the time we arrived, we were starving.
The food was incredible. Every dish was amazing. The lamb shank was cooked so well and fall-off-the bone tasty. The butter chicken was creamy and delicious. The vegetable jalfrezi was, and the naans did the perfect job of soaking up the curries. We even got a serving of basmati rice to go with our curries.
Service here is really good as well. The restaurant team were welcoming and gracious even though they were really busy. This is definitely a restaurant we would recommend to anyone visiting Twizel.

Really tasty food and amazing service - we popped by on a Sunday evening and it was absolutely packed which we took as a great sign. There was a mix of travellers and locals in the restaurant and we were really impressed at how efficient and friendly the service was despite how busy it was.
Really impressed by the extensive vegetarian menu, would recommend for takeaways and for dining in. No complaints from us at all.
Special kudos to the very friendly server - he was great!

Friendly front of house staff. The dumplings were delish! As was the Chicken Jhalfreze and Mango Chicken. Cheese and Garlic naan was perfect for wiping up the yummy sauce. If I had to pick at anything it would be that the entrees didn't come out together, about 10 minutes apart, which wasn't an issue as we were sharing so could eat one while waiting for the other to come out. Small restaurant so make sure you book as you don't want to be disappointed.

Fantastic food. We went here on the recommendation of a local and they were correct on their statement of great food and tastes.
It is very hard to replicate taste and flavours of a country you have visited, Fishtail is the closest we have experienced since returning to NZ.

This place was a great find, it is only small and was very busy on a public holiday when we went. Your usual extensive Indian menu plus a better than average vegetarian mains menu, about half which are vegan - perhaps a label beside those ones on the menu would save the waiter having to check with the chef, but that's a very minor criticism.
Food was great, tasty and reasonably quick despite them being busy. Highly recommended.

Superb. Tuesday night and this tastefully decorated restaurant was buzzing with in house customers and take always. I can see why. Decided to get something different so started with dumplings - delicious. The Roganjosh Josh, ordered hot, was one of the best I have eaten for some time, and the Fishtail chicken curry was a great choice for the something different we chose. Naan was beautifully cooked. And everything was presented well. I will be telling friends about this gem.

I am an Indian and also a Real Estate Salesperson for nearly 20 years. Very hard for someone to impress me with such pleasant customer service. One reason I would go back is for the amazing & friendly customer service by the Manager SURESH. One Man Show. This was my first visit to Twizel and looking at the town did not have much hope for any good restaurants. Checked Trip Advisor and found very positive reviews for this restaturant. Again very hard for any INDIAN RESTATURANT to impress us. Last time we liked Indian food was at Taj @ Queenstown and now this one. I did not expect such good tasty Indian food in this cute little town of Twizel. Chicken Saagwala was brilliant, Chicken Momo’s for once had flavours, (it’s terrible in Auckland). The butter Naan one of the best I have had in NZ. Light, soft and crunchy. Hats off to the Chef. If I am ever crossing Twizel, I will try my best to visit Fishtail Restaurant and Bar again, not just for the delicious food, but for the exceptional service by the Manager Suresh.
