Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A great stop, and stay in our motorhome- right from meeting friendly Michelle to chatting with the locals over a drink and then a delicious fresh burger cooked by Michelle, with chips 😁, what a great stop. Thank you 😊

Stopped at Waiau to find some lunch. This was the 2nd place we tried as the 1st could only offer me, as a coeliac, the usual brownie. I cautiously asked here and was overwhelmed by the friendliness and options the owners gave me. We had...blue cod, for which the lady made fresh batter, changed her gloves & used a separate fryer. The accompanying salad had items from their own garden & everything was delicious. This community suffered so much from the earthquake in 2016 and need all the support they can get, but please don’t go out of pity, go because it’s lovely!More

Lovely hosts and Michelle catered for us extremely well, I am a fussy eater and it was perfect. We spent the night in our motor camper in the paddock beside the tavern.

Simple but good and hot pub meals served with a smile and goood cheer. It's the sort of place one has to go and try. Your loss if you don't.

We stopped at the Waiau Tavern to park on their "Park over Property" (POP) next door, where they allow motorhomes, caravans to stay. What a wonderful find. We went into the Tavern for a drink, ended up staying for a meal and thank goodness we...did. Both my husband and I chose a burger, which we both found delicious and the best burgers we've had for years. Michelle and Lindsey welcome all their guests personally, make you feel at home, and their priority is ensuring that guests enjoy excellent, fresh and delicious meals, complemented with a choice of beverages of course!!! We feel so luck to have decided to drive the inland route from Christchurch to Kaikoura, otherwise we'd have missed this hidden gem. It was very interesting to read the historical information about their original Waiau Hotel which sadly was damaged in the earthquake. We highly recommend you stop for a drink, coffee or meal when passing through, and if travelling in a self contained vehicle, stop at their POP next door.More

- 1st class burgers, probably the best one I had in NZ, made freshly to the point - Mediocre fries, too greasy - Disgusting sausages (sorry I just don’t like the angloamerican style of sausages, they taste like greasy cardboard. Come over to Switzerland or...eventually Germany to taste real sausages!)More

We love this pub! The hospitality is brilliant. Michelle and Lindsay are welcoming, friendly and very accommodating. This was our second visit and both times we enjoyed sitting outside for a drink in the sunshine and eating delicious food inside with good music playing. Can...recommend nachos and salad or fish of the day, blue cod - big portions, hot and tasty. We camped with friends at the back on the paddock, fantastic. Thanks from Ann and MartyMore

We are currently travelling NZ in our campervan and spent 3 nights here in the small field at the back of the pub. The owners, Michelle and Lindsay were so friendly as welcoming that we felt like locals by the time we left. The food...is very good and well priced with a decent sized menu given that the pub is in a temporary building after the 2016 earthquake. Well worth a stop if you’re travelling through Waiau.More

We briefly stopped at the tavern on our road trip around the South Island. The main building was deemed unusable after the Kaikoura earthquake 4 years ago, so the business is continuing to function in temporary premises next to the original building. We had great...coffee and banana bread there, and the lovely owner of the business went out of her way to make sure that everything was OK for us. Her service was second to none, and if we lived nearby, we would frequent the business often to support her business in its recovery. I urge everyone to support this small business in small town NZ, so that we don't lose these little gems as we travel around this wonderfully awesome country of ours.More

There's not much in Waiau, so its not surprising that this felt very local indeed. The beer was OK. Just had one drink and went back to the van.
