Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a small restaurant serving small plate style Japanese food. It was our first time eating there and we were not disappointed…the food that we ordered was amazing. We ordered the shrimp shumai and found it to be cooked perfectly not mushy like we’ve had at other places. I had Tonkatsu. The outside was crispy and the inside pork tenderloin was moist and tender it was paired with a small salad of white and red cabbage. I loved it! My hubby had Japanese style fried rice with salmon. The dish came unexpectantly with a small teapot containing a light green tea. We figured out the tea was to be used to pour over the bowl of fried rice. My husband reluctantly took a spoonful of his meal and found it very light and flavorful. He loved it! Our dinner experience at this authentic Japanese restaurant left us impressed, content and full. We will definitely be back whenever we are in Saipan to try out other menu items.

This is simple small Japanese restaurant on Saipan. Located on middle road Gualo Rai. This was our first visit. Japanese music in the background. I felt like I was in Narita. Ordered: Salmon Belly, Fried Oysters, Edamame, Mahi-Mahi Sashimi (In season), and more... Accommodating staff and pleasant, small hole in the wall. Call ahead for reservations. Seating is limited.

After a few months, I finally decided to reassess Kuriya Restuarant. Service was fast this time. The food was excellent. If you're no allergic, try the Shrimp Fried Rice.

Unfortunately I have down graded the rating of this establishment. It seems that service is affected by limited staffing and space. Waited 1 hour and 30 minutes to get our food. We were hopeful since the food is good. However the wait time is terrible. One chief and one waitress. Be aware before visiting and ordering. However the food is pretty good.

Enough said. When I want Japanese izakaya fare for dinner, this is where I go. There are lots of other Japanese and Japanese-owned restaurants on Saipan, but they don't quite honor the integrity of Japanese cuisine like Kuriya does, named for the owner and chef, Kuribayashi. Staples like tamago-yaki, mentaiko, a generous and diverse sashimi platter (or smaller servings), hiya-yakko tofu, soba, curry ... or more innovative dishes that still preserve the Japanese palette of flavors like their ahi shio-tataki (sashimi over lettuce and shaved onions dripping in a house-made sesame dressing), scallops on the shell with toasty melted cheese, cute and crispy kawa-ebi (river shrimp), or the best, freshest salads on the island (the chef has invented the kari-kari salad, featuring thread-thin crispy fried potato garnish and an apple-based original dressing).
The space is as small as a typical izakaya in Japan, with a counter and booths, so I recommend calling ahead or showing up early.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays aren't as busy, so the chef often spends some extra time spoiling guests by providing o-tsumami (little amuse-bouche) and sometimes even dessert (fresh fruit and/or yogurt).
