Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are in Franz Josef, go here for an excellent hearty and filling breakfast to fuel you all day during your hiking.
Very friendly, courteous, and hard working staff that take your order, bring your food, and clean up after patrons have completed their meals. Probably the best staffed restaurant we have been to in NZ.
Excellent coffees, beautiful hearts on the flat whites. Super tasty eggs Benedict as well as eggs with toast and bacon.
Several seating choices in both indoors and outdoors. This restaurant appears to be able to accommodate fairly large groups of people as well as we saw eight people come in and find comfortable seating quickly.
They have take out food in the glass pastry/sandwich display shelves up near where you place your order…nicely organized, look delicious, reasonably priced, very tempting.
If you have kids or you are a Disney fan, there’s a TV in the back corner that had Nemo playing on our first breakfast there (yes, it made me cry like it always does) and a Minions movie about kidnapping the Queen that was hysterical.
Clean bathrooms too!

We were taken aback by the price ($2 or so more) and the relatively small size of a mug size coffee compared to others. But the coffees were very good - the crema was nice and golden caramel and on first sip a nice rounded flavour to the palate - no high acidity of burnt aromas as we've had in some of the expresses of the dark roasts here in NZ. BUT the most expensive coffee we've paid for in NZ.
Chicken wrap was tasty: carrot cake nice and rich. The icing was too sweet (again compared to others we've eaten), but luckily it wasn't over done.

Delicious Potato top pie, mountain of green salad ( great value for money) unbelievable filling in tuna salad sandwich. Drinks on slightly high side money wise. But generous size cups.

Overpriced for a cafe and serving meagre portions. The most highly priced coffee I've seen in all NZ and I am from Auckland. $8.50! My daughter ordered some onion rings and got 5 small rings that could fit on her fingers $9.50. Sorry but just felt like this place could do much better. The Landing next door is fabulous service and good food.

This was probably the worst breakfast of our 6 week tour of Australia and New Zealand. My cooked breakfast was served within minutes of me ordering it which probably means it wasn’t cooked to order. The sausage was the cheapest and most flavourless sausage I can remember eating at anytime and in any country. The orange juice was poor quality and tasted like orange squash. Our hot drinks and orange juice were finally served after we had half eaten of our food.
I would say you should try other restaurants in Franz Josef but I’m not sure if they’d be any better and there aren’t that many other places to choose from anyway and as most people only stay here a day or two the restaurants don’t need to try too hard.

We ordered the bolognaise pasta and the calamari salad mid afternoon when the cafe was relatively quiet. We waited and waited and after 40 minutes inquired about our meals. We were told the pasta had to be re cooked as they had burnt it…..How on earth can a restaurant manage to mess up cooking pasta! We were eventually served our meal over 50 minutes after placing the order. There was no apology or anything which definitely isn’t the way to run a business. Due to the lengthy delay neither of us enjoyed our meal so it was a complete waste of time and money.

The most moist and absolutely delicious Carrot Cake you’ll ever wrap your chops around. Big enough slice for two to share. The other six lunches had our whole table quiet, as they were too busy enjoying the food to stop eating.

Breakfast was terrible. Bread was rock hard, a knife wouldnt cut it. Rashers were burnt to a crisp and too hard to eat. Coffee was average. Service was quick but food was well below standard.

Good food. Good service. Good ambience. But we asked for the front doors to be opened as we like the 2 seats next to the front door as my partner needs fresh air for health reasons . Our request was denied. The restaurant was empty. So we went to their other restaurant called the Landing. Questioned them and they gave us no reason. We ordered coffee. Paid the bill and was supplied with a blue document Bann from his 3 restaurants for 12 months with the reason "other"
Wrote them two emails with no reply.

Slim pickings for brunch in Franz on 3rd Jan, this was the only cafe open!  Consequently, the place was jam packed - barely any tables left.... "Oh no" we thought. This will be average. We were very wrong!Â
We were, quickly, warmly welcomed and shown to a table and promptly served. The menu had lots of options and the cold caninet had lots of tasty options. I settled on bacon and poached eggs on toast (lightly toasted ciabatta) which was simple and delicious. Hubby had an omelette which he declared fantastiv. Our son had waffles and which with toasted banana which was a good touch. Hubby's smoothie was apparently yum, and the wifi was FAST! Coffee was on point (we are coffee snobs...).
Service was wonderful, we were looked after by a lovely gentleman who was clearly busy, but unflustered and attentive. We could see the staff moving around in sync - this place is a well oiled machine.
My only grumble was the lighting was very dark, which prevented me from taking a photo to rave about them on Instagram!
Recommend this place 100%. What a find!

Food here is great, but service needs some work. Tea was served without milk, and when asked for some, it took 30 mins to get it even after asking multiple times. Good think I enjoy a strong tea! Make sure you ask for milk as soon as they deliver the tea!

Came here for lunch and struggled to choose of their menu. It was very standard fayre and nothing leapt out of the menu as quirky, different, or remotely interesting. The cold cabinet choice was very poor and everything felt like the kitchen wasn't trying!!
The coffee was good but could have been hotter, my burger was tasty but no zing, my wife's eggs on toast were exactly that (2 poached eggs on toast, nothing else!!).
And just as I had my last mouthful, I hadn't even put my knife and fork down when the waitress cleared the table. It frankly gave the message of you've now finished your meal, so don't linger and bugger off.
I'll not be returning.

We had breakfast here. I can highly recommend the Belgian waffles with banana and bacon and maple sauce. The dirty Chai coffee we had was very nice too and a large size. The staff were very nice and cool NZ decor. Loved the signs above the service area with the NZ sayings on them.

Full of Beans served a very good Latte, even though we prefer fresh whipped cream instead from the spray can. The chocolate croissant was good and warm, the Caramel cake was awful and way too sweet. But the choices in Franz Josef are limited.

We had dinner in here and the food was excellent. The staff were also brilliant as a bout if heavy rain had washed out some roads so they kept us totally up to date on the situation. It’s also a great chill out spot where they don’t run you out when you’re finished eating
