Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is one of the only places in New Zealand where we actually had access to visit the winery operations - we absolutely enjoyed the thoughtful and very tailored visit guided by the winemaker, followed by a tasting of their products. We then had lunch...on the terrace at the front, which has idyllic views and very good food (and wine, obviously!).More

We’d had a good recommendation for the Karikari Winery Cafe but it has clearly deteriorated (see other recent reviews). The location is great but the garden area felt untended. There were very few shades (which you need if the sun is out). Service was really...slow. We had lasanga and pizza. The Lasagne was just a reheated slab of pre-prepared meat and pasta - very dry with no sauce - but it wasn’t even hot - either it had not been reheated properly or had been left to cool. We had to send it back to be heated up properly. The pizza was disappointing and we ended up eating separately while we waited for the lasagna to be cooked. No-one seemed to care much. Altogether very disappointing when we had been looking forward to this lunch out.More

The views amazing…. And thats where the positives stop! This place is disorganised, staff un trained and frankly not interested. Our table was filthy and we were asked did we want it cleaned!! We had to wait for a long time for drinks, our group...of 5’s food came out over a period of time. I could go on and on … but will just say - don’t bother going.More

This beautiful estate is run down and need of TLC The best part is the panoramic view over the vines, mountains and ocean - absolutely breathtaking and worth driving up having a glass of wine and enjoying the view. However the place is obviously under...poor management, staff seem disorganised and dysfunctional and the furniture and gardens are run down Could be an amazing venue if given the right attentionMore

This restaurant was a total shambles that we likened to Faulty Towers. After a couple of hours we were asked to vacate the table and settle the bill so they could “cash up” but we were still waiting for our mains. When the mains finally...arrived they were not what we ordered and were disgusting packet frozen food. A very poor experience This restaurant needs to close.More

We dined in the restaurant on a Thursday evening (booked a week in advance). We were shown to purchase table, waiteess returned approx 10 mins later after we went to ask if we could order drinks. Drinks came out one by one over the course...of 15 minutes (standard drinks, not cocktails). We then had to ask to order dinner - kids menu is not up to date, which then lead to disappointed kids but we're happy to substitute. Half of the adults ordered the porterhouse steak - over $50 for 300gr steak, steak cut fries, green beans and a sauce. When asking the waitress what the sauce actually was, she had no idea so we had to Google (allergy issues we wanted to check). After approx 30 mins kids meals come out, then another 30-40mins our meals finally come out. They've mucked up the order with the steaks, easily fixed amongst ourselves by swapping plates etc. But we're so horrified and annoyed to find our $50+ meals considered of a tasteless piece of meat, SHOESTRING FRIES and 3 green beans.... Really carringtons???!!! We should have gone to the pub, would have been half the price and 10x times more enjoyable and atleast would have got a salad on the side. Why on earth does this "gourmet" restaurant dish up shoestring fries??? We're not at McDonalds! Seriously 3 beans.... how tight can you be. Telling you right now we will not be going back and would never recommend. FYI- we are locals.....More

Heard alot about the food and about the property. Felt disappointed not with the front of house but the management who does the ordering. We were a table of 5 that dined at 730pm on a Friday night. A simple menu which had no ice...to make cocktails, no chicken in the entree, no porterhouse steak and no key lime dessert all of which one guest wanted. The waitress was embarrassed but the issue was not hers but that of the chefs and bar manager to get the stock levels right.More

Our first challenge came in booking the winery cafe, I emailed in the morning to book lunch that day and was told they do not take same day reservations. Despite that we phoned up and were given a booking for lunch that day. The lady...did say it was windy so not an ideal experience but we had no idea what we were in for. The major positive is that the view is amazing. You are elevated and look out along the vines and then go to sea. Spectacular. However the outdoor seating is mostly in a marque. In the strong winds it sounded like the marque would take off at any moment. It had metal poles bolted down so if anything came loose it would be dangerous. Nothing happened but the incredible noise of banging can s and metal meant I was on edge. My never get worried partner did point out if anything happened we needed to get out quick. I've never had to make a evacuation plan for eating at a winery before. I was quite on edge and so we rushed lunch. The flight of wines for $15 was interesting to try four different types. When I asked to order a glass of one I had tasted I was told I had to walk over to the bar area and order it myself. I said that was a challenge in my floaty skirt with the gales. So I didn't get a wine and they forgot to bring my partners beer. The food was just 'okay'. At the end of our meal we queued to pay it took an incredibly long time to wait to be served to pay despite multi staff at the bar. The maitre de was very good but some staff are young and just learning. This place has fabulous potential - on a sunny day.More

Before Covid, this was the place we always brought our overseas visitors for the Sunday charcuterie board. Never again. Two days ago, they didn't know about our reservation. The BBQ platter came out 45 minutes after the seafood. Their "apology" was "we're understaffed and told...you". We had to get our own water. Find silverware and small plates when the BBQ finally came. There was one middle age woman in charge and three or four young aimless teens. Staff were rude and unhelpful. The food was okay. Please don't go here. NZ has so much better to offer. Note: A Chinese giant bought Carrington. That says it all.More

We stumbled on this place after visiting the lighthouse & sand dunes needing a winery to eat lunch before returning to accommodations at Doubtless Bay. Solid find. Awesome location with the most amazing panoramic views. Standard fare such as pizzas, pasta, burger, fish and chips, thai beef salad and seafood (not fine dining) but meals were done well and we all enjoyed what we ordered. Pizzas were tasty with crispy bases. Service...was good but informal, no issue getting a table without a reservation (lunchtime on a weekday) and drinks and meals served reasonably quickly. All in all an enjoyable experience.More

Called in for a wine tasting - hard to believe this place in the middle of nowhere - not really but well off the beaten track. The setting is fantastic looking over the land and sea across to huge sand dunes. But to get back...to it - wine tasting - we were served by Paris who was a delight. The wines were excellent and they have a Tannat (one of our favourite wines at home in Hawke's Bay and not produced much in NZ) - it was delicious. Managed to liberate a few bottles (they unfortunately evaporated or leaked or something within a couple of days - they were really good though!) Thank you Paris - we'll be back if we get up there again. Will check the website thoughMore
