The Church Bistro Is housed in the original Church building from the early 1900's, and relocated from its original home, Taumarunui. The newly refurbished Church Bistro is a casual wine bar and restaurant. You can expect to see Kiwi style, European inspired food plus seasonal specials. We are now closed for winter, reopening early September.
The dining room is tastefully decorated, simple and suits the old church it lives in. Service was smooth, the food was very nice. The kids enjoyed their pan-fried fish and chips. Our seafood puffed rice paella entree was strongly flavoured with seafood, my duck breast...and feijoa main was delicious. A tasty passionfruit brulee was a tangy tropical finish to a moat enjoyable mealMore
We had an amazing meal and would have returned the following night but they are closed on Wednesdays.
The menu is small but considered and we tried a lot of the dishes, they were all great! What a wee gem in a lovely wee town.
Dined on Sunday night with the Sunday roast, absolutely fantastic. I can see why people keep coming back. Good food and the service was top notch, extremely professional, welcoming and great attention to detail.
We went to another hahei restaurant for dinner the night prior and it was disappointing, so we didn't have much expectations. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and creativity of the food of this restaurant. The food was something you may expect from...a higher end restaurant at a reasonable price. Importantly, it was just good food. If you're here for the night, make this your restaurant of choice.More
Firstly the waitress was very professional and friendly and gave us excellent service. We liked the limited menu which meant it was easier to choose our meals and probably easier and more efficient for the chefs. My husband and I had the beetroot ravioli entree...which was lovely but a better name could be a suggestion as we thought we were getting pasta. I regretted I didn’t have the steak as I felt the Kumera mash with the beef cheek was a bit sweet - but that’s just personal taste. The special dessert of sticky date pudding was delightful. Very yummy. We also ordered our wines by the glass so we could all have different ones but mainly because the bottle price was very similar to 5 glasses! Price ended up being about $180 per couple. So a special occasion outing for us! It’s an interesting building, being an old church with parking at rear. Just a little thing that bothered my husband was that the stacked chairs in the restaurant detracted from the ambiance of the dining room. - perhaps a screen would hide them??More
Ate here last year, and the quality is still there this year. The Church has a small menu (generally a good sign IMO), but everything on it is done well. Nicely cooked, presented and full of flavour. Some interesting ideas too - e.g. the sticky...date pudding done as a trifle - not deconstructed (which is an abomination and any chef doing it should be banished to Eketahuna) just presented differently, and a very good sticky date pudding it was indeed. We thoroughly enjoyed all 3 courses and tried most of the menu between the four of us. Good friendly service and a varied wine list. It is full restaurant price, but worth it - TBH it's the only fine dining you'll get in Hahei, but it's as good quality as you get in the cities.More
