We are a neighborhood restaurant & oyster bar located in the heart of Seward, Alaska. The Cookery showcases the fisherman, the rancher and the farmer, the brewmaster and the winemaker, and of course, the magnificent oyster! Whether served ice cold on the half shell, or chargrilled and sizzling in garlic butter, The Cookery's oysters are the best you’ll ever have. Each day oyster farmers harvest, pack, and ship us the best oysters available. Our fresh, hand-shucked, locally farmed raised oysters are delivered daily within hours of harvesting. And it’s not just the oysters; we’re serving Chef Kevin Lane's personally created dishes, all seasoned to perfection and served with a smile. We will feature only the freshest seasonal ingredients from local sources. Chef Kevin Lane takes great joy in creating dishes that highlight the pantry that the sea and land provides! We contacted the well known seafood restaurant in the harbor 30 days prior asking if they could allow a reservation. They were not very polite. So, I asked a friend who grew up in Seward where we should go and we had a quick answer; “The Cookery”
So glad we didn’t go to the $40 for a plate of seafood pasta place.
Our server Matt was charming and provided excellent service.
The Cookery is a culinary gem.
They had a Portuguese wine on special that was a treat. The house salad was the exact opposite of what one thinks of as the well tread starter. Fresh greens, a very delicious buttermilk dressing, house made croutons. Possibly the most interesting salad I’ve ever had.
We also had the mushroom toast appetizer. Fantastic.
I had the wasabi bomb halibut. Nice portion of fish. Very fresh. Excellent. Loved it.
My wife loved her chicken entree.
We were privileged to enjoy such a sublime meal at this not to be missed

Nice post pandemic atmosphere that made things feel normal. We ordered the first Copper River salmon of the season rare. The fish was sushi grade and could have been eaten raw but lightly grilled it was perfect. The grilled halibut was tender and flaky and what you would expect in SE Alaska, the best there is. Both presentations were interesting and u unique. Service was friendly and engaging. Everyone in Seward recommends this place and we now know why. Our only disappointment was the grilled oyster appetizer, 6 very small oysters carefully prepared with bacon and served on a bed of rock salt for $20. They were delicious but we felt over priced.

They have 1/2 price oysters from 5-6:00pm which means $1.50 each. Great atmosphere and good drink specials. We also ordered the mushroom toast which was delicious. I would go for apps and drinks and then head over to Thoms showcase for a bucket of butts!!

A local kayak guide recommended my wife and I have dinner at the Cookery. What a great recommendation! We both enjoyed the catch of the day special - grilled salmon. The Twister Creek IPA went well with the salmon. The strawberry cream puff dessert was mouth watering! Definitely stop by this restaurant in 'historic' Seward (about 1.5 miles from the marina) - you won't be disappointed!

The Cookery is likely the best elevated dining experience in Seward. There are not many choices in the area and if you’re looking for a great dining experience, this is your choice in the Seward area.
Reservations are almost a must (can be made online only, via their website). I saw a couple of walk ins while we were there, but it was very early. They open their doors at 5pm and won’t let you in a moment earlier. And definitely don’t be late. Honestly I was a bit put off by being told to wait outside when we were 10 mins early for our 5pm res. I would think they would want the bar business?
The menu is very limited but they focus on quality not quantity. We ordered the Fish special (halibut) and the beef tri tip. Our wine Rex was excellent. Our entrees were beautiful and well- prepared. Pricing was similar to everything else in Alaska, which is to say - in the stratosphere.
We ordered the cheesecake ice cream with balsamic and strawberries with bacon on the side as well as the carrot cake. The ice cream was different. Good, but we didn’t need the bacon with it. Funky but didn’t put it over the top. Carrot cake was super sweet, served parfait-style in a mason jar.
Overall a really nice experience for a night out in Seward.

I do not understand the good reviews. Ordered oysters (tasted good but the presentation was cheap and the juice from the oysters was gone). The salad (summer chop) was inedible. Some weird combination of stale veggies and cheese. The ambiance is non-existent. White walls, some local paintings. Portions are tiny. ‘Home made’ bread is 4 bucks for 2 slices. No good either. Large bill at the end. Pls avoid

I had the oyster local special, summer chop salad and the sockeye salmon daily special.
The oysters were smooth, delicious and not too fishy.
The salad was light and summery and good.
The salmon was cooked to the right temp, not over done and preserved the fish oil in the meat. It came on a bed of white beans, spinach, walnuts and pickled onions.
Make a reservation or get there right when they open. When I was there they appeared to be turning people away at 5:30.

The Cookery is what happens when you value innovation over quality. Its head chef seems to be trying their hardest to re-invent the wheel...and failing miserably.
The end result is an eatery dripping with pretence but lacking in anything of actual substance.
If you want to spend 3 Michelin Star money pretending 6 slices of bread and some booshie fried chicken are culinary excellence, then this is the hipster heaven you have been dreaming of.
The service was excellent and that redeemed The Cookery for 2 stars.

We felt lucky to get into the Cookery off the waitlist after standing in a line out the door at 5pm. Our server was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the menu and unobtrusive relative to others in our section (we were grateful!). We started with the breads & spreads and a few oysters. Followed by the halibut and an Alaskan salmon special, and cream cheese icecream for dessert! Thoughtful drink list and all food was good albeit a bit overpriced.

We dined here the first night of our arrival in Seward. I had made reservations about a week ahead and glad I did, this place is popular and I can see why, our food was outstanding. I had the halibut, my sons had fresh Oysters, we also family style shared breads & spreads, a yummy summer chopped salad, and a decadent pots du creme dessert. Drinks were had as well.
The service by Denise was excellent. I loved this place so much I bought a gift certificate for my Innkeeper in Seward who had not tried the place before. I came back to the B&B and exclaimed “oh you have to visit this place!!” Do make reservations. We hit town on a dreary Wednesday early in the season and yet this place was packed. I can see why ! I would absolutely dine here again if my travels ever bring me back to Seward.

We made reservations because of the high rating. Menu very limited with different type sauces and wheatberries that I normally wouldn't try but it was tasty and the service was outstanding. Was glad we ate there for the experience but probably wouldn't go back because of the expense and limited options.

Hands-down the best meal we ate in Seward! The Cookery is a special place with a true chef in the kitchen. Everything was perfectly prepared, from the fresh oysters, to the bread, to the seafood stew and steak. Our waiter was extremely professional and delightful. Make a reservation if you can!

I heard of The Cookery from friends who visited Seward and, man, what an excellent recommendation. This is definitely the best foodie restaurant in town and you don’t want to miss it. People start lining up hours before doors open, so [PRO TIP:] get yourself a reservation well in advance. They do half reservations for tables and half walk-ins. Not sure if the bar is first come, first served, but that may be an option too.
The food here was just amazing. The menu is very limited, so see if the menu is your style before you go. For appetizers, my friends and I had the shucked oysters (so fresh!), rosemary cashews, and mushroom toast. They were all exquisite. As my main course I had the fried chicken and, oh gosh, just thinking of it again makes me drool. It was fantastic. The fried chicken was on a bed of cucumber and cabbage that had an Asian-like sweet and spicy dressing. It was to die for. For dessert I had the Hot Dutch Baby and it was also very good but not extraordinary like the rest of the food. Then again, I don’t have a sweet tooth. Overall, amazing experience. Do yourself a favor and visit if you’re in Seward. Only dinner is served.

Every bite was fantastic. We started with grilled zucchini humans which was light and flavorful. Then we had some of the best raw oysters ever! These were local and the smoothest oysters I can remember (considered ordering more). We then had wild mushroom toast that was perfectly prepared. Our entree was fresh halibut with a flavorful crust and cooked perfectly. We had two desserts (could decide on just one) salted chocolate mouse and a pancake with an incredible blueberry compote. One of top meals in Alaska and would highly recommend. Reservation strongly suggested.

We have looked forward to our dinner here since arriving in Alaska 10 days ago. What a disappointment! Portions were EXTREMELY small, service was average, food quality was okay but not great. We think this restaurant has lost its edge somewhere along the way. Something’s wrong when you pay $172.00 for 3 persons for dinner and leave hungry.
