When I read an article that John's Coffee Shop cooked the best Eggs Benedict in New York City, I immediately added the busy little diner in Midtown Manhattan to our itinerary for our recent trip. Located at 823 2nd Street, it is a mix of locals, tourists and business people that has a reputation as the fastest moving coffee shop in town, meaning you don't wait more than five minutes for a cup of coffee. It's the perfect stop to start your morning or to have a lunch break. The pastrami is said to be almost as good as Katz's Delicatessen for half the price. And the French toast is highly recommended. But I came for the Classic Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon, two poached eggs on an English muffin with hollandaise sauce and sausage and two warm buttermilk biscuits on the side. As good as advertised. Meanwhile, my wife was equally impressed with the lumberjack freshly dipped French toast served with butter and syrup, two scrambled eggs, sausage and a fresh baked blueberry muffin. With a freshly baked cinnamon roll with icing on the side. Open from 8 to 3 daily, John's Coffee Shop also offers two other tempting items on the menu -- two scrambled eggs and corned beef hash with home fries and white toast with strawberry jam and Monte Cristo Benedict, one slice of French toast topped with sliced turkey, ham, Swiss cheese, two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. A great way to start a full day of sight-seeing.

We went here every morning during our week long stay in Manhattan. The corned beef hash and avocado toast were my favourite dishes, while my husband tried to work his way through the omelette menu, choosing a different one each day. The coffee out of the machine was a bit erratic temperature-wise on a couple of the days but they were happy to change it if it was not hot enough. Would definitely return if ever we visited that area again but recommend to others in the meantime.

Excellent breakfast, finally an affordable place to eat. The service was good and fast, portion sizes are really worth the money and everything we had was just good and tasty. Traditional diner with all you can drink-coffee.

I fear this restaurant is a victim of its own success. Very busy restaurant with seating at the counter and table service also offered. Waiters loitering around tables like an eagle seeking prey, ready to swoop once you put your knife and fork down! Service was good, food fine. Price very reasonable for New York. Include this place in your travel plans..a leisurely breakfast? Thats for you to decide.

Family came here for breakfast after being recommended by a friend. Diner was small and quite busy, a little plain but looked nice. Hostess told us we could be seated in ten minutes but would have to wait outside in the rain as there was nowhere to stand inside that wasn’t in the way. We were quite hungry so we agreed and ten minutes later we were seated. Ordered coffees which we were told were refills and they were bought over. After viewing our menus we ordered and the wait wasn’t too long. Food was delicious, I had pancakes with syrup with eggs and bacon alongside. Waiter didn’t return to check on meal so we asked as one went by for more coffee as we’d finished. Didn’t return so we asked again a while later and they came back with a coffee pot. After we finished and cleared away the waiter stood by the table for ages while writing on a notepad our bill and then left it on the table. We could not read his writing at all so had to work out for ourselves that everything was accounted for. We called him back over and he explained what everything was one by one. After he disappeared again we realised that even with what we’d ordered being correct and with the added tax, he’d overcharged us by $40. We called him back over again and explained, he took the bill and got out a calculator in front of us to check. He noted that our maths was right and that our $110 breakfast for four was actually $70. We paid in cash and then left, feeling content that our bellies were full, but disappointed by the service. A busy morning and a huge maths error perhaps, but while I’d recommend the food, maybe check bill before you’re way overcharged!

I have never had green peppers in my corned beef hash. They literally made the hash almost u edible and when served with awful first cappuccino and then regular coffee it was too much. I have eaten well well done corned beef hash all over Manhattan and clearly this is the worse case I have experienced. This place is busy but I will never return for a poor representative of the product. Shane on you.

We went there based on the reviews and sincerely regret this. Waiter was rude and literally started walking away as we were ordering - in fact he barely stopped to listen. We ordered 2 well done poached eggs and toast. The toast was dumped on the table by a waitress who told us the eggs were coming. After 10 minutes my husband asked about the eggs as the toast was completely cold. She said it was taking long because we asked for well-done. They finally arrived and were a weird pink colour and unappetizing. Definitely would not want other tourists to experience this.

We found this lovely Cafe on our last day, which was a shame as this was the best we had for breakfast in 5 days in New York. The food was fresh and had no extra sugars added to the food, extra fresh coffee and service were good. The price, compared to other Diners we had been to earlier in the week was great we had 3 coffees, 4 breakfasts and juice for $79.00, Would recommend you pop in here.

Have had breakfast here with four of us. The food was ok. The waitress was very unfriendly, annoyed and showed it clearly. She made us as tourists really pressured to be as fast as possible, while the locals could eat in peace.

Really nice place, friendly staff and good food for an affordable price. We went there twice it was cosy and we had tasty eggs Benedict, amazing quesadilla and waffles with fried chicken. Don’t hesitate to go there, it’s the best we had in NYC!

Visited three times during our recent trip to NYC as just a few blocks from our hotel. Great food each time with good range of menu choices. Staff were friendly and service good. Mainly locals which was nice and felt very much like the kind of breakfast diner you may see on an American TV show. Was expensive relative to UK prices but comparable to other eateries we tried while in the US. Would highly recommend.

For a place to have "Coffee " in it's name you would expect the coffee to be good. Furthermore if you are rated in the list of top diners in NYC you would expect food and service to be better than good. Sadly John's Coffee Shop fails on both accounts. First, the coffee had a weak burnt taste that made it very unappealing. Well, failing the first cup asked for another hoping the first was an anomaly well it was more of the same burnt weak blah taste. Honestly if seems as if the coffee system hasn't been cleaned adequately because it was the worst diner coffee ever I have tasted in NYC. Secondly the service was very matter of fact and not very personable and friendly . We had to ask for refills and things that an attentive staff would have looked for as a matter of course was something lacking. The food was good and acceptable but again to be on the top diner list much more is expected which this one fell sorely short.

We had lunch at John's Coffe Shop after an interesting visit at UN headquarters (also highly recommended!). It is a real American diner with few tables but fast service, so waiting time is very short. Food was delicious, including warm soup, real burgers and cheese-cake. Coffee is of course "core business" and really excellent. Highly recommended!

Great place, nice people. I had an egg white, American cheese and potato egg sandwich which was delicious but I thought it was a bit pricey $9. My boyfriend had an omelet and potatoes which was awesome. Will visit again when in the city. Quick seating and friendly staff.

I ordered a plate of blueberry pancakes and it was delivered very quickly by grubhub- I wish they had a sign in the window that stated they had other food because I walked by and didn't realize they served food until I looked up delivery options another day. The prices are very good for NYC. The pancakes were tasty and they have good breakfast options all day.
