So we wanted to try New York's biggest sandwich so we ordered The Monster - it was "Served on Thick Sliced Rye Bread, with Corned Beef, Pastrami,Roast Beef, Fresh Turkey, Salami,Sliced Tomato, Lettuce,Cole Slaw & Russian Dressing" and it was $52. We got it delivered to our hotel room via one of New York's many delivery companies.
The sandwich was well packaged and it was well delivered, it was all held together without any issues from the delivery. It was absolutely huge, ive got a big head and it was the size of my head!
The meat was absolutely delicious, really great quality ingredients. My favourites were the corned beef and the turkey. It was a really well prepared sandwich.
As far as getting it finished we were nowhere near - it was a pathetic effort and there was 2 of us! But i can say we have tried New York's biggest sandwich!
Really delicious food, give it a go. See if you can take on The Monster from Sarge's! Next time we go we will definitely be trying it again.

They say on their t-shirts "New York's Best Kept Secret". Well Im glad I have found the secret. This is a great little deli in the old style, offering real good value, tasty food in huge portions.
On my last few visits to NT I have been looking to have one of the great deli sandwiches, but the other two places I used to frequent are sadly no longer there to the point I was even considering trying out Katz's downtown and joining the lines of celebrity chair spotters. So glad I found Sarges.
The lunchtime special menu is great value with a huge number of options on there. I went for a half sandwich (choose whatever filling from the main menu), I chose hot brisket and it comes with fries, a small bowl of soup (four types I went with chicken noodle and was packed with flavour) and a bottomless drink for $19.95. Great value and the brisket just fell apart.
My dining partner went for the triple deck turkey club sandwich, which was a tasty as it was huge!. She couldn't manage all of it and I nabbed a quarter and it was delicious.
Service was brisk and brash - I say that in the New York style not as negative if you know what I mean.
Was a great mix of regulars, locals and just the odd tourist in there all enjoying great food. Its a big of a tight squeeze but as they say what you gonna do.
Oh they also give you a complimentary dish of coleslaw (which was nice) and two of those pickles the New Yorkers are so fond of (which I hate).
Will certainly be back as I wanna check out the Hash.
Great job. Great find.

What a disappointment. I ordered a cake for my aunt's birthday here. Unfortunately, after the disturbing experience, she never got it. When I arrived two minutes before 10am, I was screamed at and informed that no one could help me by all of the men behind the counter preparing food. When someone who was willing to help me finally arrived, she was very nice and apologetic for the behavior. However, during my wait I realized there was a total of 3 men working without face coverings or gloves of any sort, two of them behind the counter preparing food. I drew the line and requested a refund when one of the men with no face mask or gloves started handling my cake to box it up. For a restaurant that proudly displays multiple signs stating you can not enter or be served without a proper face covering, it is preposterous, reckless and entirely disrespectful to allow your staff to handle the food of others while not practicing proper safety protocols. The establishment is a JOKE and patrons should beware.

We were a group of 6 so we got to try a number of things on the menu. Portions were huge, you definitely will not leave hungry. The square knish was flat and overcooked, the meat on the sandwich so dry that you had to drench with dressing or mustard. The cheese blintzes had barely any filling but lots of too thick crepe. Specials and hot dogs were probably the best thing we had, boiled is definitely the right choice. The stuffed cabbage was terrible, huge with lots of meat but very little flavor, cabbage also seemed flavorless. If you go, get the hot dog and sauerkraut but leave the rest behind.

I highly recommend this place as a diner which serves huge portions from an extensive menu,
It is busy and noisy but that doesn’t matter as it is such a great atmosphere with plenty of locals enjoying their meals as well as tourists. Old style booths and tables and a polite, no nonsense woman who served us was extremely helpful.
Soup, veggie was delicious as was the pea and the matzo ball soup apparently was the best ever.
The servings are massive and I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen my husband leave any food before. Corned beef hash.
So pleased we went there and as a tourist it was better for me than visiting some of the tourist attractions this great city has to offer.

Whenever I see tourists lined up to go to that fake diner in Times Square I think, oh, no, go to Sarge's. It's not that far! You'll get a ton of delicious deli food in a bustling environment. Perfect New York pickles and coleslaw on every table are a sign of a great place. I was dining solo today and still got fast, friendly service. Believe me, that is not the case everywhere. Yes, Sarge's is pretty expensive ($21 for a corned beef sandwich), but it's worth getting off the beaten track a bit and getting your money's worth for the real thing.

My son brought me to Sarges for lunch. I had Sarges French dip with crinkle fries. Best French dip I ever had. Served on a fresh roll with a good amount of au jus on the side. My son had hot pastrami on a fresh roll. The sandwiches were stacked with meat. The fries were excellent. Prior to lunch we were served a plate with a kosher and cucumber pickle. They serve breakfast all day and are open 24 hours. They also deliver. I can’t say enough about this place. Will be visiting Sarges again on my next visit.

I was starved when I got to Sarges for dinner that night and the meal was well worth the wait. Since there is no inside dining, I ate outside in their make-shift dining room. That was nice because it was a beautiful day to eat outside and it was a very civil way to eat.
I had the half a sandwich and soup entree. I got the Pastrami sandwich on rye which came with two pickles and the Matzo Ball soup which came with a side of bread and a Gus's Cherry soda. I was impressed. At first I did not think this was enough food but after eating it was just enough.
The Pastrami was piled high and was tender and well spiced. I added the spicy mustard they gave me and just pieces at a time and then ate the sandwich. The Matzo Ball soup was delicious but could have had pieces of chicken or vegetables in it. The broth was full of flavor though and was perfect on the cool night.
Eating outside was fun on a beautiful night and it was nice there was a civil place to sit. It was nice to just sit back and watch the City come to life on a Saturday evening. The counter service was friendly and quick and I had a nice meal.

See my astrix notation at the end of this review. Based a previous review seen below, in my opinion, anyone who calls this Delicatessen the "best in New York City," has not dined out very much. I tried two of Sarge's Delicatessen's soups. Both soups were way below par in my opinion, they were the mushroom barley soup and the vegetable soup. The pastrami sandwich was pleasing but was not equal to the best that I have had elsewhere.

The food was amazing. But we had some odd charges... $2 for "open food"???? And a service fee. The prices of the food were not out of line with other NYC dining experiences - but the extra fees were just weird. Service was fine. We felt welcomed.

The separated and plexiglassed booths and tables make Sarge’s less noisy and cramped, while keeping the deli atmosphere. The no-nonsense, brusque service added to the deli feel, but I sensed they were happy to see us.
The pastrami is truly excellent, macnine-sliced and very thin but as good as hand sliced, with enough fat and a good rub. Corned beef was also very good, but as is normal, a bit dry and lean (some people prefer it that way).
The menu is huge, but it’s hard to skip the pastrami.

We travelled from the UK and had heard about other Delis that were well known to tourists but this one was the one the locals loved and raved about, we weren't disappointed.
We had the famous Pastrami and corned beef on Rye which was unbelievable, it looked crazy but was absolutely delicious, sweet potato fries were gorgeous too and the mustard on the tables was next level.
Staff were great and very friendly.
When we're back in NY we will definitely be coming back👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Classic deli with a massive menu. A bit scruffy round the edges and the entrance is full of Deliveroo drivers collecting take outs but it does what does well. Ridiculously thick hot pastrami sandwich was good and tasty with pickles and coleslaw on the side. Home fries were delicious but it was more than any human can eat haha.

There are few remaining "true" pastrami places in NYC, but strangely enough, amongst those which feel reasonably authentic, two 2nd ave Deli and Sarge's are within 2 minutes walk of each other! I could compare them head to head.
Both offer excellent food, a great atmosphere and an authentic deli experience.
Sarge's pastrami and coleslaw were very good, though I found the 2nd ave one a little better. By contrast, I found Sarge's pickles better and their cucumber salad excellent (I can't compare as the 2nd ave Deli guys forgot mine!) I also found service a lot nicer/friendlier at Sarge's and prices are a hint less high though they have also gone up a lot in recent years.
I got my meal as take away and enjoyed it thoroughly and I can't wait to be back!
