The restaurant decor is amazing, with prolific and visually stunning flower arrangements on walls and tables. There is an intimate bar at the restaurant entrance, and both inside and outside seating. Given the quality of food and service, I'd recommend sitting inside to get the full dining experience without external distractions. If dining for two, request a corner table.
We started with a glass of wine at the bar, and then moved to our table and took a look at the extensive wine list. It's mainly French based, but has some international offerings. A good selection of different vintages and prices is available. We selected a 2010 Margaux, which was excellent value for money .....
We started with a shaved smoked salmon blini, which was light and refreshing, and then proceeded to a foie gras and duck confit main course. The foie gras was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and literally melted in your mouth. The duck confit was rich, and partnered well with the foie gras.
My wife had a dessert with coffee, which was light and refreshing, and I had an XO Armagnac to keep her company. Service throughout the meal was attentive and friendly without being intrusive, and we had a well paced meal, with plenty of time for conversation between courses.
Overall, one of the best restaurants I have visited in a long time. It is expensive, but it is also fairly priced for the food and wines, and the overall experience.

A walk by prompted a visit and ghat is a decision that I will not regret.
100% French but only on the good side. Well educated waiters that were very attentive without being a pain. The menu literally begs you to move in and try every single classical dish. I had Boeuf Bourgeon With parts (which was thank god not al dente) and the cheese platter.
Unfortunately the cheese was too cold upon arrival but when noted it got warmed up and was really nice.
Overall a super pleasant experience which everybody should try.

My husband and I treated ourselves to La Grenouille while visiting NYC. We arrived a few minutes early and were welcomed with champagne and a small table near the bar until our table was ready. The atmosphere is elegant with fresh flowers throughout the restaurant. As a vegetarian, I ordered split pea soup and a cheese soufflé which were both outstanding. They do provide bread and mini cheese puffs as appetizers which tasted very similar to my soufflé - knowing this I may have ordered the mushroom truffle soufflé instead but still thoroughly enjoyed every bite. My husband ordered Artichoke Heart Carpaccio with Poached Quail Eggs & Truffle Oil as an appetizer and Classic Sole with Dijon Hollandaise and verts as his entree which he said was one of the best meals he’s ever eaten. Our table was right in front of the jazz band and we were blown away by the vocalist from Paris who was outstanding. For dessert, we shared creme brûlée. It was expensive meal, however for the outstanding service, atmosphere, entertainment and food, we felt it was well worth it!

Let me start out by saying that the decor and appearance is beautiful. It's all downhill from there. The service was obliging I would not say overly friendly but professional. For an appetizerI had the seafood plate with oysters, the lump crabmeat is what you might expect as it comes out of a can (as does all lump crabmeat) but the oysters were not so good. As a matter of fact right about the time I finished them I noted a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I'm thinking this might be something. but I'm not really sure. Ordered the filet of boeuf which was a tasteless and bland piece of meat that I could not finish because it was simply awful. Now at this point while waiting for the salad the feeling in my stomach sends me to battle stations. I had to leave before salad and dessert. Maybe you've had one of those nights where you were puking at the side of the road as you're driving home and then the rest of the night you're running to the bathroom. That was my night. Nuff said. Won't be back in this lifetime.

La grenouille is a grand dame that is just not where it once was
The flowers used to be amazing. Now they are nothing special
The room looks a bit dated but worst of all the food is inconsistent and as expensive as any restaurant in the world we paid about 250 / per person after tax and tip
Yes it may be the best soufflé in NYC and yes the owner Phillipe tries hard and is charming but most would consider it a rip off. Soufflé should not be $ 44 And the portions for the entrees and apps are not generous The service is good but
It’s a bit sad that it feels like a tourist trap when in fact it could be so much more if the prices and food were in the realm of reasonable or enticing
Love the music but any jazz club has a menu that reflects a younger crowd. Update the concept please at least for the last seating with some value and dish’s that we’re not served on the titanic And please in vest in the flowers again Dried twigs are boring and unattractive

We had dinner at La Grenouille on September 22 based on the recommendation of our friend who dined with us. The website failed to mentioned the necessity of a dinner jacket but it was provided at the entry. I did get the impression that they did not have a wine list probably because it wasn't mentioned but also because BYOB and corkage fee were mentioned. We brought two bottles of wine and that was a TERRIBLE MISTAKE. We can be blamed for not inquiring as to the corkage fee thinking it would be between $10.00 to $40.00 per bottle. NO it was $100.00 per bottle and never mentioned until it appeared on the final bill!
For the price and the reviews of the restaurant one would expect excellent near faultless service. What we received was far from that. Keeping with the wine, once opened it was never touched again by the waitstaff. We had to refill our own glasses. The non-alcohol beverages were rarely refilled. Service was poor at best.
As for the food it was well prepared and delicious - if they had it to serve you. If you wanted the sole, you were out of luck on the night we were there. Overall we were sadly disappointed!

Except for beautiful flowers this place is weird. Prix fix menu for 3 was over $600.00. Food was mediocre . My 80 year old father who was wearing a dress shirt and a cashmere sweater was promptly given a dinner jacket, no big deal, but we expected the food to live up to the price. None of us finished our food. Icing on the cake was when the owner took the microphone and sang weird songs. The band was lovely but he and the food were not. Never again.

The wife and I went there for our 29th anniversary. We had never heard of the place before, but the wife found it and the photos looked appealing.
We arrived a bit early and had a drink at the bar. The bartender was engaging and fun and the owner came to let us know that the table was ready whenever we were.
The first table we were given was not to our liking, and the staff was very good about it and we got a better table.
I had oysters to start and a Filet Mignon while the wife had figs to start and Fo'i Gras - she also had a pistachio souffle. The oysters were excellent and the steak was well-cooked albeit a tad bland. She enjoyed everything she ordered - especially the dessert.
There is a live band and the owner himself was the singer. He appeared to enjoy that part even more than the restaurateur job.
All in all we had a wonderful evening and we will certainly go back next time we are in NYC.

Old fashioned, refined French food, almost really good. What was disappointing was the plating, or the lack of refined presentation and a feeling the chef was going through the motions. My filet mignon was brown, the potato was brown, the crispy onions were brown and the sauce was brown, on a white plate. You eat with your eyes as well as with your mouth and your nose. And since when is a quenelle the shape of a matzoh ball? The evening lacked a sense of excitement and theater. If Daniel were still offering outdoor dining we would have gone there. At close to $1000 for four of us to eat on the sidewalk in a less than attractive enclosure was a downer.

Beautiful Valentine's lunch with a quiet and elengant crowd. Food is always excellent but I wish they would change the menu. Although all their signature dishes are excellent, perhaps a new special would ensure more frequent visits. Still this is a very special New York Restaurant.

We visited this past June and we were charmed by this anachronism. In June we tourists were merely seated at the worst table in the house, the food was good. Last night we were served what purported to be Sauvignon Blanc, but in an iced and sweating glass, followed by a a virtually undressed lobster salad, un-sauced and overcooked scallop first course, and burnt and overcooked foie gras and our main course.
These ridiculous snobs don't deserve your money.

Not for the faint of wallet. We made a reservation based on the menu seen earlier in the day. Our plan for a late night dinner was expecting two light meals plus a souffle and wine. Surprise! there are 3 menus, early bird which allows choice, a very late dinner and the one we were stuck with, price fixe. The service, ambience, music and atmosphere were top notch, however our simple plan became a moment to remember. Our out the door cost was over $500 which included tip for 2 glasses of fine wine, lovely split pea cup of soup, excellent sole, lamb and the soufflé. This was, by far, the most expensive meal for two in our lives and we are high end int'l travelers. It will be a talking point and warning to others, a momentous experience and one time visit to this storied, non michelin star restaurant.

Very little remains from the good old days. The flowers are still spectacular, the service is correct but the food changed a lot. It does not have the elegancy nor the taste it use to have, specially the sauces, all tasting about the same. From all the dishes chosen by the table, only the soufflé was exactly the same as the ones prepared in the last 50 years. They have an excellent menu, but the kitchen needs to get back to butter, cream and truffles!

My daughter and I recently had a wonderful meal here. We were seated at a lovely table tucked in the corner with a nice view of the beautiful dining room.
The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. My daughter had the clams for her appetizer and loved them. I had the French onion soup - different with the three cheeses but excellent. She enjoyed the filet mignon for her main course and I had the spinach soufflé. The soufflé was cooked perfectly but was too large for me to finish as we wanted to try dessert. The chocolate soufflé was the best we’ve ever had anywhere in the world. Amazing.
The chocolate rum mousse was good but the soufflé was better.
It was our first time to La Grenouille - my sister in law recommended it as she is a regular, but we did not know anyone at the restaurant nor was she with us. Regardless, we had wonderful service and food. We will definitely return on our next trip to NYC. Would highly recommend this classic restaurant!
The only thing that we would recommend changing is having a little more char on the outside of the filet, otherwise it was a perfect meal.

Have come here a few times over the years, and still find this a nice, charming place. Intimate restaurant with nice atmosphere. The food is consistently good, and their souffles are amazing (unusual to find hazelnut and pistachio flavors anywhere).
