About
Restaurants Around the World: 9. Antico Forno Boston, MA Antico Forno is billed as “The Most Authentic Italian Restaurant,” and we’re hard pressed to argue. This mainstay in Boston’s North End manages a cozy mom-and-pop atmosphere with world-class traditional cuisine. Entrees like Saltimbocca di Pollo and Linguine al Frutti di Mare hearken back to the old country, but Antico Forno is best known for its brick-oven pizzas piled high with house-made Italian sausages and mozzarella. 10BEST Says (#8 Boston Family Friendly) Best Value: Traditional Italian baked in a brick oven sets this Italian restaurant apart. Serving a selection of pastas, entrees and pizzas all cooked to perfection in their famous brick oven at reasonable prices, Antico Forno is a good value. Kid friendly (although lacking a children’s menu), Antico Forno serves even the littlest one sin style. Serving some of the best pies around, Antico Forno carries a large selection of toppings as well.

After reading the reviews regarding lousy service and good food , we still decided to try this place . We ordered Vesuvio and GF Pizza with sausage. Our waitress was " Dana" , she appeared after we waited 15 mins approx , took our food order and then we never saw her , after dropping drinks she then came to take care of check. A food runner delivered the food , a busser cleaned the tables, ( Lousy Service ) and The GF Pizza was like eating a shoe. On the table the only thing we liked was the Vesuvio Pizza and Wine. It was sunday night ( memorial day weekend ) and they were busy ( we waited 20 mins for this average experience ). I am usually a big believer of reviews and ratings but this one I will make an exception and steer clear of it. Not worthy of second visit Ciao !!

We had made a reservation the day before at Antico Forno. The next day we spent sightseeing in Boston but got done way earlier than expected. Antico Forno was gracious enough to move our reservation up & what a wonderful experience !! We were seated immediately and our server came right away & offered us drinks options. Upon reading the menu, there were so many delicious sounding choices I had a difficult time choosing !! I ordered calamari & it was THE best calamari I have every had !! Our dinners ordered were a pasta dish, chicken parm, a pizza & chicken saltimbocca.....everything was fabulous.....ample portions & reasonable prices.....can't wait to go back.....a definite recommend !!

I was here with a party of 4 on a Monday. It was our first time here so we made a reservation even though we were all meeting at the restaurant at 5:00PM; usually before the dinner rush starts. It was relatively busy so I’m glad we made the reservation. The ambiance was nice. We went after a day of sightseeing so we were in the-shirts and jeans and we felt comfortable, but you could easily go after a day in the office or a dressy occasion and be comfortable also. The service was attentive but not rushed, perfect for having a great meal with people you actually want to spend time with and have actual conversations with. I had the Linguine Con Vongole: Linguine pasta, garlic white wine sauce, sautéed clams, fresh cherry tomatoes, baked in parchment paper, finished in brick oven. It arrived still wrapped in the parchment paper and foil, and it smelled wonderful. It tasted as good as it smelled, and it definitely hit the spot. It was a proper portion too, which I always appreciate. Great food doesn’t need to be served in portions large enough to feed a small army. I also had a glass of Chianti, Poggio Bonelli, Villa Chigi, 2021 (Tuscany). It was exactly what I like in a wine. Not too far in any direction, deliciously drinkable with and without food. I finished my meal with the Flourless Chocolate Cake: Gluten-free, served with whipped cream and strawberries. It was perfect! Again, a proper portion. It was delicious and chocolaty, but not too rich or dense. I will definitely be back, and I’m sad that I live in PA so I can’t go back right away. I hope I remember to take photos next time.

My girlfriend and I visited this past Sunday afternoon. We sat at the bar. BTW, this is a beer and wine establishment with a VERY LIMITED selection of spirits. Our bartender was not terribly friendly - almost gruff. We ordered a salad and Chicken Parm. They both arrived at the same time. We had also asked for bread, but again not delivered until after our meal was served. In the past, we never had to ask for oil for dipping, ut we did this time, and it came in a small pitcher. My GF put it best- it was like asking for ketchup at a burger joint. The Chicken Parm was good, not great, yet the pasta tasted like it was served from a vat that had een sitting in a warmer all day. Overall, I know I can serve a much better meal at home. The server obviously did not understand a thing aout "pace". My girlfriend, whom I was trying to spoil and impress, ruefully suggested we should have gone somewhere else, which we will do the next time we are visiting the North End

The Italian dinner you dream of when you are considering red sauce, clams, seafood or veal. Couples in their 70's thought the atmosphere was festive and clamorous. Not an optimal destination for old friends catching up (lots of shouting) BUT the food was outstanding and the portion sizes overly generous. Entrees included linguini with clams in a briny rich broth of wine. garlic and herbs, pasta bolognese rich and flavorful, Linguine al frutti di mare another winner, Osso Buca huge portion, deliciously sauced, all reasonably priced. Warm and wonderful! I suspect a weeknight would be better and of course, this is a BIG and busy weekend with college reunions and proms.

Sadly this place is totally overrated. Chaotic a due to the overall frantic environment of being so very busy, even despite a pre booked table. Sadly, although the food is authentic and generous in portion size, we’ve had an awful lot better. On payment, very disappointingly, despite leaving a cash 15% gratuity, we had to pay an extra 20 dollars to exit the building, as the elder Italian lady owner demanded that was NOT ENOUGH!

Arrived in Boston on a Thursday afternoon, winding down after the previous night’s P!nk concert. Looked for a nice, reasonably priced, sit-down Italian restaurant in the North End to enjoy a meal and drink with 3 friends. This restaurant had good reviews on Trip Advisor so thought we’d give it a try. We arrived around 12:30 pm and restaurant wasn’t too busy but within the hour it filled up! Our host was fun and friendly as he seated us and answered questions about the menu. Our server was prompt and attentive but very quiet. The four of us all had pizza: margherita and tradizionale. Pizza size is 11” and were made to perfection! Our drinks included Bellini, beer, Manhattan and Mojito - all were delicious! We stayed for quite a lengthy visit and enjoyed the company, food and atmosphere. Note: washroom has motion detection lights. You may need to dance while in there to have light! Not a big deal at all but surprising for the first visitor caught in the dark!

Good food. Excellent clam starter. The restaurant was busy and felt a little rushed. Main course arrived before the starter had been finished. Having eaten in Italian restaurants all over Europe we have generally experienced warmer interactions.

We have been coming to Antico Forno for decades (see photos). And I feel some of the servers have been there for decades as well. It is so nice to see the same faces. We left Boston several years ago, but we travel here a great deal, and we do not miss an opportunity to go to when we are back in town. Even if we only have one or two days in town, Antico Forno is on our list. What’s to love? The atmosphere is so cozy. Walking in during the winter nights, you are hit with the warmth and the wonderful smells from the kitchen. Even in the summertime, Antico exudes coziness. It’s both romantic and great for families. My son’s first experience with their calzones was when he was in middle school. He was thrilled (as a growing boy) by the size of the calzone. I love taking my family there. But I also feel very comfortable going there as a romantic prospect. The two-top tables seem sweet and perfect for romance. Some nice wine choices by the glass. The prices on the wine have gone up a little bit, but they still are reasonable. The brick oven creates solid pizzas. Nothing too fancy, just a really good pizza. Plus, they have specials like lobster ravioli that feel a bit more elegant. We don’t eat dessert there, because there are so many wonderful dessert places down the street, but I have never had a meal here I did not like. Or even a dish here that I did not like. Everything feels good and fresh, and the food comes quickly, even if they are very crowded.

There are pluses and a few negatives. On the plus side the 4 cheese pizza was good the antipasto was good. The negatives were we never got a refill on iced tea, the added sausage on the pizza was at most okay. Finally the seating was lousy the restaurant was almost empty but they sat everyone in the front of the restaurant to draw in customers.

Excellent wood-fired pizza. The price is from 17 to 25 euros for a pizza, it is high for us Italians but we must understand that we are in the USA. Friendly waiters and make an effort to speak Italian. Very nice place. Advise

A mid afternoon early dinner before a Celtics game. Antica Forno was a great choice: warm, cozy and the maitre d' accommodated our request to move up the reservation. A huge selection on the menu so choosing was a challenge. Final picks were: spinach sauteed in garlic for an appetizer, ribbolito soup, rollatini milanese and pasta puttanesca. All were excellent! The soup hearty and served hot, the spinach gently sauteed with olive oil and garlic. The rollatini was bubbling and loaded with cheese in a lovely tomato sauce; the second star of the show was the pasta puttanesca: the most tender calamari I have ever tasted atop linguine with a delicious sauce incorporating black olives and capers. The bread was so good we asked for a second batch. And for dessert, a flourless chocolate cake that was a perfect finish.

Play music so loud that clients have to talk löydy - noise is quite overwhelming. But the real issue was that food was really disappointment.. over-cooked mushy pasta, tasteless tomato sauce, not the best salciccia either. And first restaurant in the U.S. where staff does not occasionally ask if all good (I would've asked for salt and pepper at least) but ignore you completely. To be honest one of the worst Italian restaurants, and I have visited quite a many all over the world. Would not return or recommend.

I’ll admit that the 3 out of 5 is generous, although our waitress was delightful, and the warm rolls served were delicious. Actually, the grilled calamari was interestingly prepared and good also. But our dinners were terrible—all of us were disappointed by the quality. Although the chicken parm was baked, it wasn’t good . . . The mushroom pizza also was semi-tasteless (and lacking mushrooms).

After a fun drizzly day of pub crawling, I was ready for some red wine and comfort food! We wandered into the NorthEnd, and saw the Antico sign that’s featured on Trip Advisor’s website! We were able to be seated immediately, because it filled up quickly. Our server greeted us , brought out wonderful focaccia bread, and took our order for a great bottle of barbera di asti, Lasagna Bolognese and Rigatoni Salsiccia. Both dishes came in a timely manner, allowing us to wind down and enjoy a glass of wine. Our servings were more than ample, and both were delicious! Fresh pasta, great sausage, wonderful gravy. It was just what I was wanting for a cool October evening! The only down side to our dinner was the TV in the dining room. No one was watching, it wasn’t needed for ambience, in fact it detracted. I hated looking up and being faced with the tragedy in Maine, or the bombings in Gaza. Please remove the TV!
