Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located in a repurposed old church, this place has the ambience of a friendly local coffee shop – – but with great food! The service was excellent and, best of all, the produce is so fresh that much of it is growing inside! We asked the proprietor about the greens, and were rewarded with some non-GMO cucumber seeds that he grows in his plant tower. If we’re ever in this area again, will definitely be back. Highly recommended!

My wife & I stopped in to Cafe Appalachia at lunch time on a weekday while we were returning home from northern West Virginia. Access from & back to I-64 are relatively simple with assistance from mapping apps. Counter orders are taken & paid for, drinks are dispensed at the counter, and the food is prepared in the raised altar area of this repurposed church building. The menu is small but the variety should suit most diners. The staff was very friendly, the food was freshly prepped, the dining area is quirky & comfortable, and our tasty sandwiches (The "Local" smashburger & a Melt with chicken salad) each with a generous serving of potato chips on the side were just the right size for a satisfying lunch.
Donations beyond your purchases are subtly solicited, and they are for a very good cause. We would definitely return for a midday meal stop if we were ever again passing through South Charleston or visiting the area, and we encourage the local community members' continuing support of the Cafe Appalachia mission.

Neat place! Enjoyed the waffles--soft edges and more than I could finish. I had the side of cheesy grits which were very good. Staff is friendly and attentive. Great story being in a former church and a nonprofit to hep folks get back on their feet. Definitely try it out!

Casual relaxed dining, enjoyed not being rushed thru our meal. Food was fresh and flavorful. Charleston Bread Company always good. A none profit that differently deserves support.

We had heard of Cheryl Laws and the good work she and her team are doing in helping reintegrate rehabilitated women with addictions by providing a place to learn new skills, gain confidence and build new lives for themselves. On our visit to Charleston, WV, we stopped by to see for ourselves.
We didn't know what to expect when we walked into Cafe Appalachia for lunch but we were very pleasantly surprised to find a lovely cafe restaurant set up in an old church. Mismatching sets of tables and chairs filled the room, immediately making you feel at home. A cheery and friendly greeting from the ladies behind the counter made you feel welcome and they invited us to come in, and come on up to the counter, which we did. Lunch is a set menu daily and you have the option of choosing a large plate ($10) and a small plate ($8). My husband and I chose a large for him and a small for me and we were both more than satisfied.
Lunch consisted of a fresh, crisp spinach salad with goat cheese, tomatoes and a balsamic drizzle. Our meal was a different and delicious Bavarian sausage and apple hash, tasty potato corn chowder and fresh fruit. Everything was fresh and plentiful. And friendly Amber behind the counter made a delicious decaffeinated mocha coffee upon my request that was a great way to finish up our meal.
The facility was immaculate and everyone was friendly, smiling and welcoming. I would definitely recommend visiting Cafe Appalachia for a nice lunch (or breakfast) the next time you're in town. "Serving a greater purpose with every meal" or as I like to think of it, eating good while doing good. I wish Cheryl, Holly and their team much success!

Excellent food, coffee, and service! They have suggested prices for both small and large plates of the food offerings for the day. Small today was $8-$9 and a large plate was $11-$12. If you can't afford to pay that, you're welcome to work there for the plate of food. Money goes to a great cause helping women in recovery! The menu consisted of green salad with homemade ranch dressing, sauteed cabbage and sausage, fried green tomato sliders, potato cakes with sweet pepper relish, and a chocolate cherry dessert. Everything was fresh and delicious. I also got a white chocolate lavender iced coffee - also amazing. Highly recommended!
