Nearly two centuries ago, the first grapevines were planted at Kerikeri That was the work of Samuel Marsden, the driving force behind the establishment of Anglican mission stations in New Zealand. Nearly two decades ago, Rod and Cindy MacIvor followed in his footsteps with the establishment of the vineyard and wine estate they named after him. Marsden Estate is youthful by comparison, but the vineyard, the gardens and the estate building look well settled into the sub-tropical landscape of New Zealand’s Far North. Just a few minutes’ drive from Kerikeri village, Marsden Estate offers wine sales, tastings and tours, with innovative cuisine to complement its award winning wines. It’s known for

Part of our decision to visit New Zealand was to visit wineries and sample some varietals. Lucky for us the Marsden Estate Winery was a 10min drive from our rental house in Keri Keri! We visited twice during our vacation. Our first luncheon was just...superb! Great service, creative menu featuring some of the best local ingredients and, of course, the wine. We tried a flight of whites and quickly picked out one of the Pinot Gris as our fave. We settled in for a “long boozey lunch” and savored every single bite and sip. The setting was magical. We sat under the grape leaves on the outdoor covered porch. We were not rushed. We ordered the shrimp on white bean purée along with some pork belly spring rolls. Delish! Following our starters we opted for the salad with seared tuna and another garden salad with sliced beef. Outstanding. Lightly dressed, great veg. After a satisfying lunch, we relocated to the garden and plopped down in a couple of beanbag chairs. While spooning affogatos, We admired the vineyard, the trees, the birds and just enjoyed the peaceful setting. Our second visit was the total opposite. We booked the last available table on a Sunday. We raced up from Auckland to make it on time. Our table was ready but, after we sat down with menus and water, we were ignored for 40 minutes. Resto was crowded and busy (no surprise for a Sunday) but we couldn’t get anyone’s attention. Our table was out in the garden and a bit of an afterthought. Had we not had SUCH great service previously, we would have left. We stayed and went back inside to order a bottle of wine. That helped. About an hour and a half after sitting, we got our food. Food was terrific - and, worth the wait. Lamb rump for me and beef for my dining companion. There was enough to take home for another meal. As the restaurant emptied out, service improved. We didn’t hang around for dessert. We bought some wine to take home with our leftovers. SO - if you go, book a table midweek! SalutMore

What a way to spend a Sunday late morning & early afternoon, simply stunning. We had a late breakfast which was delicious, the creamy mushrooms the star of the show. Lovely setting overlooking the rather dried up lake, nonetheless it was so relaxing. Rather than...leaving, the atmosphere was so enticing, we ventured down to the comfy sofas & enjoyed a couple of glasses of their estate produced wine - a vocalist arrived, she had a wonderful voice. We can't forget Lola the dog who would arrive at the table with his calling card, s big leaf. Don't be put off if you don't like dogs because she keeps her distance but she's a lovely well natured Alsatian. All the staff were great, and so friendly. We must make special mention to the Canadian lady who served us, she was so helpful sharing her knowledge of he area. One of our best dining experiences during our month away in the southern hemisphere, it really was a special couple of hours.More

The setting is lovely: covered verandah with grape vines providing additional shade. Our server, Mya, was delightful—she’s on her way to studying biology and maybe geophysics—attentive and professional. We enjoyed (and split) the Pork Belly, Jalapeno & Hoisin Spring Rolls (2), the Linguine, Tasmanian Scallops,...Prawns, Spinach, Crayfish & Tomato Bisque, and the Marsden Mess dessert (mango pavlova with fresh berries). We’ve enjoyed Marsden’s wines in the past and this visit was no exception. Try the Pinotage—it has been excellent in the past but we didn’t taste it this year. This time we tried the Sparkling Rose, Fume Blanc, and Black Rocks Chardonnay. The Rose and Chardonnay were our favorites.More

This is a great restaurant for big groups and anyone in need of comfort food. There are also plenty of non-comfort food options. This is a great place to visit on the outskirts of Kerikeri. The entry driveway however is a bit difficult to spot....Once you are in however, you are sure to have an amazing time! I went with a group of six people and we each had a main and two bowls of hot chips (or fries) which was plenty.More

A very good informal style restaurant. A good menu plus some excellent specials to add to the menu. I had spiced lamb rump which was perfectly cooked for me on a bed of crushed potatoes, we had Tuna that was cooked to request and a...mushroom linguine. The wine was of course the star as well with their Blackrock Chardonnay and I liked their red chambourcin. Deserts were decent as well.More

We booked ahead changing our plans as this place was booked out on our preferred date. Unfortunately the weather was wet so we weren’t able to enjoy the beautiful garden, pond and views. Our visit started with a wine tasting where we were offered up...to 6 tastes of beautiful locally made wine. The menu contained a lovely variety including an additional blackboard menu that had specials of the day. The salmon was delicious and the crème brûlée perfect. The service from all staff was 💯. Highly recommend booking in advance to ensure you don’t miss out.More

Just returned from visiting and very much enjoyed it. The staff were so jolly very attentive and knew their product. The lunch was excellent and the selection of their own wines went so well with the choice on menu. Excellent location would love to return...on a sunny day to sit around the lake. We’ve always enjoyed eating here when visiting Kerikeri over the years. This time we had our little dog with us and had earlier been rudely turned away from another place where we’d asked if could have her with us on their verandah. So I asked...cautiously if we could have a table where she could sit underneath. The lovely lady on the desk immediately welcomed us and set up a table for us. There were a couple of other well-behaved dogs there and none were being a nuisance to other diners. The food was excellent. The snapper and prawns with a lovely sauce were wonderful as was the venison. The crème brulee was beautifully creamy and had a proper crack to it. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and even more appreciated the friendly and welcoming service. We will definitely return again!More
