As readers of my reviews will know, I don't like places that solicit trip adviser reviews, especially not by adding the request to the bill. Normally, I don't review such places, but I do make exceptions and this is one of them. I walked in off the street having checked in at the Travelodge just down the street. There were three other couples and myself while I was there, but it was the night before Valentine's day, so I guessed there might be a spare table. There is a main room at the back and two smaller room fronting onto the street. I chose a table for two facing the small bar area. The menu was a dry run for the 14th, but still offered good choices.I selected the Pan Fried King Scallops (3) with peppers and a sweet chilli sauce. (this comes with a £3 supplement to the fixed-price 2/3 course menu). Scallops were well cooked, but even so, with three you must eat quickly lest the third is starting to turn rubbery: not the fault of the kitchen. Scallops were preceded by a plate of olives and bread with dipping bowl of I guess balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Main course was Braised Pork Belly with cream whole grain mustard mash, savory cabbage and a cider gravy. This was served with a side dish of small mixed vegetables, including parsnips two ways and a heritage carrot. Both courses were faultlessly cooked and the size of the pork dish, including generous crackling cooked to perfection, sadly left no room for a third course; especially having seen the size of some of the portions going to other tables. One small irritation was that the restaurant was out of tomato juice. Barman was very apologetic and I opted for a small glass of a very acceptable Italian red wine and a jug of tap water. Two courses were £27 and had I included a third it would have been £32. Good value for this level of cooking and the size of the portions. Service was efficient and friendly and the background music interesting and not intrusive. i would recommend this restaurant and would eat here again next time I am in Newport.

On a recent family holiday to the Isle of Wight, I tried to book a last minute dinner reservation for a Saturday night. The person who picked up the phone informed me that they are fully booked for the next couple of weeks. I called back a few hours later to see if we could get a take away / delivery. The person who I spoke to recognised my voice from the earlier call and said they do not offer take away service but would try and make space for us. On the day, we were running late for our allotted time and again the same person sent me the menu so we could order in advance and there would be no delays when we arrived. Amazing service and even better food. With two young kids, this was the perfect restaurant. I'm looking forward to going again.

Visited here with my family of 10 in August and booked it back in June - due to the party size (and with 4 kids) we had the private room at the front which was excellent. They didn't have a kids menu when we booked but they actually created one and printed the menus - which I thought was above and beyond expectation. There was plenty of parking outside the restaurant for all of us and when we arrived it was quiet but by the time we left it was buzzing with a really nice atmosphere. All the waiting staff were very friendly and attentive and couldn't do enough for us. The food was also exceptional - all the kids devoured theirs and all adults had the 3 courses which is very unusual for us. As it was a special day for one of us, they said we could come early and decorate the room, they also allowed us to bring a cake and have them bring it out. We felt the price of the meal was good especially considering how tasty the meal was. I would definitely recommend and when i am back in the IoW i will return. thanks again!

Went for a meal the second night after opening and as always the food was fantastic. As a fussy eater, I don't struggle finding something I'll like here and the food really is amazing and is good value for money. The service is brilliant with lovely staff who will happily go the extra mile and the whole evening was so relaxing too. Tables were spaced out and the staff had clearly considered diners safety throughout the evening. I really would recommend a visit here, but booking is definitely needed as it's so popular, but definitely worth the effort. Couldn't recommend this restaurant more. Thank you hewitts (Josh and Dean and the team) for a brilliant experience.

We chose this restaurant because it's no.1 on trip advisor. Delighted when we sat down and read the menu, it's really mouth watering. Sadly the fillet of cod was overcooked and the whole dish was dry. It seemed like they'd cooked our food too early, then kept it warm in the oven which left the cod hard at the edges. Not a good finish for a delicate fish dish. It was a real shame but thankfully we were in good company so it didn't spoil the evening.

I recently moved to the Isle of Wight after divorcing my 4th wife and I’ve been looking for some decent places to eat. I’ve been making sure I stick to the local restaurants of the island and I’ve given a few ago such as Tumblers, McDonalds and The Painters Arms (Cowes). But Sunday I went for a roast at Hewitts and ‘What a treat’ it was. I went for the pork belly, it was tender, juicy and just full of flavour. The gravy was so incredible it’s something I’d like to have a mug of sat round a fire on a winters day. Call me crazy but I’m not really much of a Yorkshire pudding guy but even that I gobbled down with no hesitation. I will be making a Sunday roast at Hewitts part of my weekly routine as often as I can, I would recommend to my friends and any of my ex wife’s. 5stars well done Hewitts.

My family of 6 booked dinner for halloween and were put in ‘the snug’. As we had our two small children with us, this room was absolutely perfect. It had such a beautiful homely and cosy feel, with the large table, fire and sofa, we instantly felt so comfortable and relaxed. The staff were so welcoming, friendly and attentive. Abi was an absolute delight, giving our young children special drinks for Halloween and really making a fuss on them. Now the food....amazing, tasty and fantastically presented. We all had the baked Camembert with homemade garlic toast and a chutney, to start. It was such a nice start to what would turn out to be a fantastic treat for the tastebuds. To follow, I had pork belly. The pork belly was succulent with the most crackly crackling, just delicious. The carrots that accompanied the pork were so sweet and really went beautifully with the pork. The mash was perfectly smooth with fresh rosemary, which again was exemplary. We would like to thank all the staff that made the experience of dining at your restaurant one that will not be forgotten. We could not recommend this restaurant enough!

We had the best Sunday lunch ever! The starters were absolutely lovely and the roasts were absolutely delicious. The meat was so tender and full of flavour. The meal was made even more special by the fact that all the food catered for my gluten free diet. The restaurant is cosy and all the Staff are so welcoming and efficient. We couldn't fault our visit. Definitely a fantastic place to go. We'd highly recommend it and we can't wait to go again.

we were advised to pre-book our dinner at Hewitt's as the plague has reduced the number of covers it can provide. We arrived on a dark, rainy night to a warm welcome, though the distanced main room was rather chilly and echoey. We could hear two private parties having fun in the two other rooms which had more soft furnishings and were not so echoey. Our server was charming and informative and our meal was excellent... it's hard to create an atmosphere when every conversation is audible, but he reassured us that shortly they will be refurbishing the main room and ensuring that the acoustics are better. The food was good.

Our only disappointment, after electing to eat 3 courses, was that we were so full after two that we couldn’t manage desserts or coffees! The scallops we chose as starters were perfectly cooked and presented, maybe just lacking only some more seasoning. My chicken breast in a creamy sauce with dauphinoise potatoes was great as was my wife’s pork belly with black pudding bonbons in a delicious meaty gravy. Seasonal green veg were provided in abundance. We had wines by the glass and enjoyed discussing them with Dean the owner, who also regaled us with the story of his Italian “grandfather” who had worked on the Orient Express. Prices are very fair for the quality of cooking - highly recommended,

Hewitts boasts a 5 star experience and holds the title as the no.1 restaurant in Newport, it does not disappoint. The staff were attentive and clearly passionate about their jobs and the food was fast but definitely no rushed. Dimmed lighting set the foundation for the relaxed environment and soft music filled any moments of silence. The portions (although rather small for the price) were perfect as to not feel uncomfortably full or slightly unsatisfied. The food was cooked expertly and meat was perfectly delivered. The meals with distinction included: the crispy duck and honey soy sauce salad which was sweet and light, the pork belly which was soft and rich, and the panna cotta which concluded the meal excellently with a creamy, subtle finish.

We had an enjoyable evening meal, although not as good as we had expected. It was lovely, but having read all the reviews it was to be the highlight of the week and wasn’t our number 1. As I say, still lovely and enjoyable. Disappointed there was no children’s menu, however they did discount the price for a variation for a child. A whole chicken breast for a 5 year old was too much though. The kids could have shared one children’s meal between them. I’d recommend to them to look at either creating a small children’s menu or looking at their portion sizes when serving, they could do much, much better. Steak was beautifully cooked. I really enjoyed the duck salad starter. Excellent wine!

The food And service at this restaurant is so good! We hadn’t made a reservation and popped in to see if we could get a table. The gentleman that welcomed us was so lovely. He sat us down and talked to us about the menu, asking us about our holiday and generally chatting with us. I ordered a pink gin with lemonade and when it was served I asked if they had some strawberries to put in it. They didn’t and I didn’t mind but the guy had to pop out to get something and brought me a new gin with strawberries that he had picked up on his travels, which was so kind and above and beyond our expectations. The presentation of our food was great and everything was perfect and so tasty. I wish I would have got they gentleman’s name as he deserves a special mention. A must visit when on the Isle of Wight and we will definitely return. Thank you for a great evening.

I've been meaning to dine at Hewitts since they opened but for a whole range of reasons, I've just not managed to do so. Many of my friends run a range of diverse businesses in the Hospitality Industry and without exception they all rave about this place, discretely located in Lugley Street, a road famous on the island for high level eateries over the last 40 years or so. When Boris announced Lockdown 2, I thought I would treat myself to a 'last supper' and so when I saw a Hewitts post on FB, I booked in for a last minute Sunday Lunch before the 4 week closing started ..... I wasn't disappointed. I got a lovely warm welcome and was shown to my mesa para uno. I ordered King Prawns with Peppers & Garlic, followed by Roast Lamb with Mint Gravy and a nicely chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which surprisingly went well with the lamb as well as the prawns. The prawn starter was quite outstanding. Beautifully cooked and served. Really great, complex but well balanced flavours. I abso' loved the caramelised half lemon, which added a whole new dimension to the dish. The Roast IOW Lamb with roasties, stuffing ball, ubiquitous 'Yorkie' and a fabulous selection of fresh, perfectly cooked vegetables just made my day. The crowning glory to my lunch was the amazing minted gravy, which perfectly complimented the lamb without overpowering the subtle flavours. The FOH service was great and not at all intrusive. I will defo be back after Lockdown 2 guys. Thank you so much for making my fist visit to Hewitts such a memorable one.
