This place is like a junk drawer: you're in a small space wondering how that got there and why.
There's a counter space with a couple of chairs, a tiny yard sale in the corner and snacks for sale on a table with a cushioned/taped...up corner, I'm assuming because it was sharp and people kept running into it. Also, like similar restaurants in the area, lots of homemade signs affixed to the walls and counters with Scotch tape. Plus a homemade open side out front.
These quirky types of things bring me great joy and I was tempted to point to the yard sale and exclaim,"What's your best price for all of it?"
I started with sushi: the simple salmon roll and something called a Boston roll, which I've never heard of. In case you're a person like myself who yearns for random knowledge that may only every help them on Jeopardy, here's the definition:
A Boston roll is a simple Eastern United States adaption that pays respect to the Japanese roots and celebrates the Boston-style seafood. The substitution of imitation crabmeat with poached shrimp is also appealing to the farming enthusiasts who prefer using other seafood instead of endangered fish to create rolls.
It had lettuce instead of avocado and something called "Japanese Mayo" which is essentially creamy, spicy mayo. It wasn't horrible, but I'd probably pass again. The salmon roll was moist and had flavor, so that was a win.
Then I ordered (to go for later) the lo mein (just the noodles--I know it's impossible to believe, but I've never had lo mein), sesame chicken, avocado bubble tea, and tempura sweet potato, which I've never seen.
The sesame chicken was subpar. The yellow/orange rice didn't have a decent texture or flavor. The lo mein was good, and I'm excited to try it again and a nice establishment. The tempura sweet potatoes weren't bad, but had only a mild flavor of sweet potato.
The bubble tea was so bad I tasted it and threw it out. It was like you bought some cheap powder at a convenience store, mixed it with luke warm water, and served it with tapioca bubbles.
The lady who worked there was nice, so I feel bad that I didn't have a better experience. Not horrible, but not an "I'll try it again" either.More
