About
At Gus's we're all about the food! Gus's restaurants are low-key with a southern flare where you will hear soulful classics emitting from the jukebox. Many people call Gus's a "blues-infused southern eatery." At Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken we focus on the chicken! We begin by using quality chicken which is treated to our special preparation techniques before being marinated in our proprietary batter. Once it's properly fried to a crisp golden-brown, we serve it up with a plate full of southern inspired sides and a cold beer or sweet tea. The result? Customers line up at our door before we're even open!

Honestly, I am not a huge fan of fried food, but I won't go into that. If you like to have a guilty pleasure of fried chicken every so often and want something good, definitely Gus's is a big win. Their chicken is slightly spicy, probably similar to the heat of Sriracha... it is Spicer than Texas Pete/Tabasco. If you can't handle at least medium spice, this might not be the place for you. Of course, you can always have water with your meal. I always get the 3 pieces of white meat place that come with their baked beans and slaw. It does come with a slide of plain white bread (not sure why) and it costs $16.70, or you can just go with the half chicken for $17.90. The two-piece meal is smaller, so I wouldn't go for anything less than 3 pieces, or you might leave hungry. As for their sides, the best I would say is their greens, slaw, mac, and cheese, or fries. As a side note. Usually, I toss out the chicken skin as it is just too fatty for me, but Gus's does an amazing job with the chicken breading and cooking. The skin is nice and crispy, so if you like crispy chicken, this is your spot. We have a Gus's World Famous Chicken now in Atlanta and to be completely honest, if you want Gus's, eat it in Memphis. I personally think it tastes better (probably due to the source of their chicken), or maybe just because locations outside of Memphis may run things differently. As for parking here, there are several places to park on the street. They do have paid parking next door in a parking lot. This location is busy on the weekends, so try and come before rush hour or after.

Traveling from New Jersey, my wife and I needed to experience a true southern fried chicken dinner, as we've been mostly exposed to the chains in our area. We went for lunch after touring the nearby Civil rights museum and were promptly seated in the very crowded dining room. The room was cheerfully decorated with posters, billboards, and all kinds of signage, and the patrons included a blend of Americana. Our server Malik was engaging and efficient. There are many options to choose from; we started with the fried green tomatoes then ordered chicken diners with beans and slaw. The tasty crispy chicken was on the hot (heat) side and the sides were also very good. The beans and slaw were exceptional - better than we've had at two of the better Memphis rib places. We completed our experience sharing a tasty slice of pecan pie. Anxiously waiting for the day when Gus branches out to New Jersey!

Gus’s is located just about 2 1/2 blocks off of Main Street trolley.. it was busy on Saturday night so service was a little slow but chicken, okra, coleslaw and coconut pie were excellent and very reasonable. The chicken crust was spicy but delicious. Highly recommend.

If you like hot, spicy fried chicken you may enjoy eating here. It's too hot for my taste. I also don't like the fact that chicken is the only thing on the menu, not counting the grilled cheese on the kid's menu. There's nothing fancy here. I don't mind that part, but the sides are nothing special, either. They also give you a piece of white sandwich bread, not a roll or cornbread. Who wants a slice of bread like you get at home?? Guess they think it's "charming" for those visiting from outside the South... Not sure what the hype is about at this place.

Our group of 12 followed this restaurant recommendation by an employee at nearby DeWitt airport. GREAT idea. We only had to wait for 10 minutes to be seated. Our waitress Travisha was as good as the food. All food we had was tasty and worth the visit, not to mention very reasonably priced. Travisha gladly prepared 6 different checks, helped serve our selections, and was always attentive and cheerful. She is definitely an asset to management. Note that plates and utensils are paper and plastic. Chicken may be a bit too spicy for some. A true southern fella in our group felt the sweet potato pie was too custardy. Otherwise everyone loved the food. We also learned this restaurant can be found in many states around the country. We look forward to visiting their restaurant in Michigan.

Sooo good! Their fried chicken was soo crispy and delicious and flavorful. Their fried chicken absolutely has a kick, whereas their tenders did not. Their sweet tea was the best I had in Memphis! My husband said the unsweetened tea was really good too.

We were recommended Gus’s for the fried chicken and were not disappointed. Some of the best I’ve had. Food overall was very tasty. Whilst it was pouring with rain outside, the wait staff were cheery and it was a very pleasant meal. Music inside - via the juke box - was consistent with the Memphis experience and played at a volume that did not hinder conversation.

The fried chicken is excellent and seasoned to perfection. The restaurant was very crowded, surprisingly the wait to be seated was minimal. Our server Caleb was very friendly and attentive. He refilled our drinks without asking. Someone in our group said it was the best fried chicken they ever had. The portion sizes are good and the chicken is tasty.

Place located just outside the bustle of downtown Memphis, spartan but characteristic structure and furnishings. Choice of various fried chicken parts, very generous portions, excellent quality/price ratio. The drinks are served in very cute logoed plastic cups to take home as a souvenir! If you're passing through Memphis, stop by.

It was crowded when we got there but they have a great system and we were seated within 20 minutes. It was well worth the wait. Hands down the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. It was so good I gnawed on all the little breast bones (and may have actually eaten a couple…). I also got the greens which were perfectly seasoned and tender. My brothers also ate like piglets and loved it. Service was friendly, fast and perfect. Definitely recommend.

My husband and I dropped into Gus's around 11:30 on a Sunday. We were seated right away. There's a sign above the counter that warns you against requesting your chicken done any other way except Gus's Way - and it's right, because that's some of the best chicken I've ever had. Just the right amount of spice, served fresh and hot, with delicious sides (go for beans and greens). Wish we lived closer so I could eat this regularly!

Gus's Word Famous Fried Chicken is the "real deal!" When a friend found out I was going to Memphis this past week, he called me and said, "whatever you do in Memphis, definitely eat at the "original" Gus's Fried Chicken on Front Street." He was definitely right. Our group of six all agreed that Gus's chicken dinner was by far the best meal we had in Memphis. All of us had the two piece chicken dinner, with two sides, and white bread. The chicken was advertised as "spicy." To all of us, it did have a hint of "heat," but it was much less that what any of us expected. All of our chicken was fried to golden brown, and was quite delicious. We liked all of our sides. The mac and cheese got the highest rating among our group, but the coleslaw and baked beans were a very close second. The place was totally packed at 8:00PM on a Thursday evening, with a line out the door with diners who were picking up their orders to go. Somewhat surprising until we had the "Gus's wonderful dining experience!"

I got the dark meat plate, chicken was perfectly cooked a dark golden brown. Crispy thin batter with a bot of spice to it. The beans were ok, I didn't care for the slaw. Chocolate chess pie for dessert it tastes like chocolate fudge. Great service my server Tiffany was as nice as could be.
