Me and my boyfriend were doing NC500 and found it quite a struggle to find food spots that weren’t fully booked in advance or some hotels were only allowing food for guests. We called to reserve a table here but the man just said to pop down and it’s a first come first serve basis. We headed around 4:45 for our dinner as we thought it would probably be quieter then and we would definitely get seated, which we did. The lovely waitresses couldn’t have been more kind and helpful and the menu had lots of options - fresh seafood, lasagne (veg option too), chicken, pizza, curry etc. We also had dessert and the sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble were both delicious. Reasonable prices too as I had two courses, my boyfriend had 3 and drinks and it came to £43. Would love to return one day!

We stayed for one night on our NC500. The room was clean but very small. We booked for an evening meal and did feel the tables were a little too close but with a little shuffling felt a bit more secure. the food was excellent. Massive portions, clearly freshly cooked and the waitress recommended Pie was simply one of the best I've eaten, with Beef so tender it melted! The scotch egg was also Incredible! The reason I'm not giving this 5* is as the room was very small - when I booked I was offered a King size room on the1st floor but didn't get that. No worries the food and service made up for it!

Excellent hearty portions and quality meals. The steak and ale pie was a favourite for us. Normally a hit or a miss choice, but the steak was so tender it fell apart when chewing it. We were told by the waitress that the chef sources the meat locally and cooks the steak all day in a slow cooker. She takes great care to remove the fat and gristle. I was immensely impressed with the Orkney fudge cheesecake. It’s first on the dessert menu for a reason. Absolutely delicious, creamy and rich. All great value for the pennies too. Will definitely return.

Several of us were recently on our annual week to Durness and tried to eat at the hotel. We called to book a table and were told no bookings, just turn up. So we did and after a short wait were given a table. A waitress gave us menus and took our drinks orders but explained that due to the huge numbers of tourists it would be 20 minutes before she could take a food order. We hadn't eaten all day and were extremely hungry. After over an HOUR a waitress then told us the kitchen was closed and no more food orders could be taken!!! After we sat there for an hour with menus and drinks. So we left in disgust, only for another 2 members of our party to go there half an hour later and be served food within 15 minutes ( kitchen closed? ) Utterly disgraceful, abysmal service

We spent a night here on our NC500 trip and had dinner and breakfast. The sound proofing between our room and the next was non-existent. We could hear everything that was being done in the adjoining shower-room as if the door was open to our room. I was woken by his morning pee! Breakfast was served by the owner wearing his mask over his mouth but not his nose so what was the point - especially as he was holding our plates of food and standing over us. The waitresses in the evening were more Covid aware and careful, but I had seen staff in the kitchen with no mask on.

Excellent food. Great service. Spent the night on our tour of the NC500 with a group of 11 Harley riders. Everyone enjoyed the food and were complimentary about the level of service received. The hotel even provided (free of charge) a Birthday cake for my wife’s celebration on the actual night we dined. Looking forward to returning next year. Definitely not one to miss 👍🏼

We were recommended Smoo Cave Hotel by our accommodation and were not disappointed. In fact, it was so good we eat there two nights running as the menu was extensive enough. The staff can’t do enough for you and the kitchen staff are happy to adapt dishes to your requirements. All in all two very pleasant evenings spent having dinner.

We came here for a meal on a stop over in Durness. What a gem. Food was all hot, cooked to high standards and delivered quickly from the kitchen. Was absolutely gorgeous! The 3 waiting staff were excellent. All three girls were quick on their feet, efficient, polite and couldn’t do enough for you. Huge kudos to the team in on 15/09. The restaurant itself was really pretty, good parking and a lovely location. Definitely a must visit!

We visited twice on our short stay in Durness this year and the food was excellent yet again. We’ve visited Durness 4 times and keep coming back here. The fish is amazing and locally caught so you can taste the freshness! The service this year was the best we’ve received, we felt safe and comfortable visiting. All tables cleaned, staff wearing masks and everyone checking in before being seated. The staff are friendly without being overbearing and the pints were perfect, thanks to all.

Being the only place to get an evening meal around Durness, we turned up quite late at 8pm to be told they were totally full for the evening and could only do a takeaway. It was my Mum's birthday so I was a bit disappointed but understood. They. managed to squeeze in the couple in front but then by some miracle found us a spot too and were so incredibly helpful and polite. Was so grateful!

We were staying in Durness for 2 nights, and Smoo Cave Hotel was the only place to get a meal. They were really busy, we had to wait a short time for a table. the first meal we had was great, I had salmon, my husband had the curry, we had desserts too, and on the 2nd evening my husband had scampi and chips and I had a steak, which really wasn't great, I told the waitress when we paid, she didn't say anything. I'm still pleased we were able to get dinner in Durness.

We're Travelling the NC500 and Reviewing as we go along, and the Smoo Hotel was very accommodating during our trip. Its located in Durness and not far from the Smoo Caves, but still very rural, but worth making this a stopping point in the NC500. The staff were excellent and chatty. There's a bar/pub in the hotel, so no need to venture out. The meals in the pub were very good, but a little small......as was the breakfast. The hotel is clean and Homely and well maintained. Nice conservatory to sit in, and outdoor area too. The dining room is well set out and clean. Disabled Access, and I sure we saw someone with their dogs in the pub too. Fairly average price for accommodation, and bar prices. The scenery surrounding the Hotel is outstanding! Overall a great stay. 🚩 Location 8/10 £ Price 9/10 🚮 Cleanliness 10/10 🌐WiFi 10/10 🚻 Staff Performance 10/10 🐕 Dogs Welcome ♿️ Disabled Access 8/10 🍽 Meals 6/10 ⚠️ Negatives- Meals a bit small

From very first enquiry via the website about booking for a night the response was fast, polite and friendly. We phoned in the morning to say we might arrive late, the reception were very relaxed and told us that the kitchen was open until 7.45pm if we wanted dinner. Arrival was efficient and friendly, we are staying in the annex, it’s comfortable and can take a family, has a fridge and microwave. Small things but we had chocolates on our towels, and they provided separate shampoo, conditioner and body wash, always a nice touch! We were told that the restaurant was short staffed so we were a bit anxious about food having had mixed experiences so far as we are doing NC500 one week past the “end of season”, but we had 3 courses, everything was available, everything was really well cooked and local and the service was brilliant. I would recommend this place to stay or to come for a meal with absolutely no hesitation, perfect hospitality combined with high quality food.

Great staff and lovely food. The waitresses were all so cheerful and lovely which made our meal very enjoyable. We stayed at Mackays in Durness and arrived quite late after climbing Ben Hope in the day. This was the only place open and they usually stop serving food at 8pm, however our hotel called ahead and the restaurant said it would be fine for us to stop by slightly after that and they would still feed us - this was great news as we were starving after our hike and really kind of the staff to go above and beyond for us. Thank you again! We both had lasagna which was delicious and we couldn’t fault it. Would definitely come back again if we’re in the area.

We visited here (twice) in June 2021 after seeing reviews saying vegan options were available. There is a separate vegetarian/vegan menu with 5 vegan options (chilli, lasagne, thai curry, chickpea curry and pizza). We tried everything except for the pizza and enjoyed what we had. It's not fancy food but good satisfying fayre and generous portions. The only vegan dessert option was vanilla ice cream but the waitress recommended a visit to nearby Cocoa Mountain for vegan treats (hot chocolate, chocolate croissants and hand made chocolates).
