Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My son-in-law's birthday was approaching during our visit in Pittsburgh recently and I wanted to find him a special birthday cake. Not being a native to the area I started my search on Yelp and was determined to seek out a promising bakery in the...area. I eventually settled on Prantl's Bakery, located at 5525 Walnut St, in Pittsburgh's Shadyside area, that's a renowned bakery that's been serving the community since 1970. With a rich history and an inviting atmosphere, that offers a wide range of baked goods, from cakes and pastries to cookies and bread. When I read that the bakery's founder, Henry Prantl, developed their famous Burnt Almond Torte, which has been praised as the "Best Cake in America" from several sources, I knew I had to check it out. This renowned dessert, along with other popular items such as the Chocolate Chip Cookie, Almond Cookies, Raspberry Thumbprints, Apple Strudel, Cinnamon Rolls, Elephant Ears, Peanut Butter Pie, Cheese Danish, Apricot Kolache, and much more, hooked me! In addition to its sweet treats, they also offer custom cakes, catering services, and a cafe where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. The bakery has a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff that make it the perfect place to relax and indulge, and I did. First, let me say emphatically that their Burnt Almond Torte is indeed one of the best sweet treats I've ever had so the reviews nailed it!!! So, I ordered the birthday cake at 9am on Saturday and picked it up at noon, easy peasey. While there I loaded up on assortment of sweet treats to share and of course the almond promise :-) The cake was their half and half which was a half white cream and chocolate cake that was gorgeous. Even better the cake was a BIG hit with everyone and I was very pleased with the not-too-sweet delight. Every one of the cookies, tarts, pies, and patties were delightful and all the locals were very impressed. Bottom line: There's actually parking nearby, which is a big deal around the Burgh, and this beloved Pittsburgh institution with their variety of delicious baked goods and a warm, welcoming atmosphere is sure to satisfy your cravings. Highly recommend!!!!! Hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PMMore

Prantl's Bakery is a MUST stop every time I return to Pgh! Their Lady Fingers are the best in the world! This was my mother's favorite dessert and it is also my favorite! Their almond torte cake is also awesome. Total YUM!!!!!

Gobs, Gobs, Gobs! We visited to sample all flavors of gobs and the burnt almond torte they are known for. The bakery did not disappoint. Everything was so delicious. The only problem is now finding a place in Chicago (my home) that can fill my...gob cravings!More

I used to live in Pittsburgh but moved in 2007 . I love the almond torte of which the bakery is known for. I traveled to Pgh and had a craving for the torte. I went to purchase the torte and I received a pre...packaged item . I was skeptical but continued with my purchase . I’m sure Prandl’s bakery is under new ownership but the torte was still good but could use improvement. I think I paid 40 dollars for an 8 by 8 prepackaged cake . The cake was moist and the almonds were very good . My disappointment was that the cake had a very thin layer of the icing . It used to have at least 1/4 inch of icing .More

The apple strudel was cold as ice and was not very good regardless of the temperature. The service was not exactly warm either we felt unwelcome and the cashier just looked at us bored and irritated.

My CPA accountant said it was the best cake she ever ate. It was for Christmas and after 10 years of treats, she just raved about this cake being the best. Guess what she gets next year.

Amazing bakery…yes get the almond cake even though you aren’t a huge almond fan. They have mini versions and it was sooo good. Should have ordered more than 2 minis. The elephant ears are huge! Size of a dinner plate. Also ordered empanadas which we...are looking forward to, but haven’t eaten yet. Everything was well packed with easy, quick pick up. No long lines when you pre-order! Closed Sundays do plan accordingly!More

Stopped in here after eating at Pamela’s near it. Picked out 4 different items and it ended up being $15. Did not like the price, however, every item was delicious! We chose a gob, blueberry scone, and cinnamon rolls. We didn’t have everything the same...day, but it all tasted great! I would come back again!More

Thought I would try the torte. I was assured it was made fresh today. It looked great. Lots of almonds. Wrapped in plastic wrap. The icing was VERY sparse as was the filling. The cake was very crumbly and fell apart too easily. It was...lack luster in flavor as well. $35 and not impressed at all.More

I really did not want to have to write this review but sadly I am going to. It was the first time going there for my family. We went there as opposed to my usual bakery because they have not been there. My sons items...were not fresh. I should not spend good money on items and have to microwave them on the same day. I am not sure we will be back. I did however send them a message.More

The bakery is average at best. Stop buying this almond torte because of an outdated huff post article. My experience with it is that it’s always incredibly dry and crumbles uncontrollably. For the high price that you’re paying for such a small cake, you can...find much better almond tortes in the city. I get that it’s a hometown favorite, but if you have any sort of discerning taste or are looking for quality, you are not going to find it here. Their secondary locations in North Huntington and Greensburg consistently lack a variety of options. The only thing worth getting here is the thumbprint cookies (but good luck finding variety at one of the secondary shops.)More
