About
The Commoner in Downtown Pittsburgh is open for business! At our gastropub, we don’t distinguish between commoners and kings; we just want to feed the good people of Pittsburgh. In the restaurant, seasonal menus add a modern flair to classic comforts, complemented by a robust selection of local beers and craft spirits. It’s all served in an industrial-inspired setting in downtown Pittsburgh. Come and join us for an uncommonly good time.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Never even got to what I am confident would have been mediocre food. The reception staff was extremely rude. Was there with my business partner and they sat us at a tiny table right next to a large party in a nearly empty restaurant. When...I asked if they could move us to one of the many other tables that were a little larger and provided a little more elbow room, the staff member went and huddled for a few minutes with two other compatriots and informed us that all the other tables were reserved — this was at breakfast mind you. So we left and went to Raymond’s, where we should have gone in the first place. Cafe Raymond is an awesome place for breakfast. Very fresh food and friendly people.More

We had dinner here before going to a show at Benedum Center. The restaurant is in a basement area off the hotel lobby so it was convenient for us as we were staying at the Kimpton. The restaurant has a small menu and a small...wine list. Not a lot of options to choose from and the appetizer menu was really lacking. But to be fair what we had was pretty tasty and so too the wine. We had a bottle of 2014 Lapostolle red and it was good. We shared the fried potatoes over a cheese fondue as an appetizer and it was good. Then we both had their only steak entree which was a strip steak smothered in a mushroom sauce. The steak was good but the mushroom sauce wouldn’t be for everyone. We shared a desert and it was not bad and all the desert choices were $8. I also had coffee. With tip we paid $210… We also had breakfast before leaving the hotel. Breakfast was good. Enough options for most people. $55 for two… Service was good in both cases. In the end, there are just so many great restaurants in downtown Pittsburgh and this while decent isn’t great so we are unlikely to return.More

This basement level, dark and cozy restaurant was a wonderful surprise. Nestled in the garden level of the Hotel Monaco offers delicious food, great service and a pleasant atmosphere. The menu is not extensive and the prices a little eyebrow raising but I hope to...make it back and eat here again.More

Nothing common here! I had the Korean-influenced chicken sandwich with added bacon-- it was decadent, spicy, and very satisfying, right amount of kimchee and dressing. My wife loved her breakfast sandwich, it was an amped-up version of something you would get at a good coffee...chop. Superb service. The place was crowded and we should have had reservations, but they seated us at the bar, which worked well. Shout out to Kyle the bartender for taking care of us. First class breakfast in a posh setting was $34, I'd go back in a heartbeat.More

This is a hotel restaurant/bar. Having said that we had a good dinner here. Be aware that they have a limited menu. Also, while it did not appear busy when we walked in they said all the tables were reserved and we had to eat...at the bar. We didn't care however if you do care I suggest an advance reservation. I thought they were a little on the expensive side but it is in the middle of a city.More

Had drinks and dinner at the bar with my wife. I had an old fashioned which was great and my wife had the "there's always money in the banana stand" which she enjoyed. The cheeseburger I ate was phenomenal, two patties fried on the grill...with onions and pickles on a brioche bun, good 'n greasy. Very nice departure from your typical grilled burger. Brought one home for my son; he loved it, too. A bit pricey for me but worth it.More

Great place! Make a reservation or you will not get a table. My husband had the Eggs Benedict and I had the Chicken and Waffles. Both were out of this world! Will definitely return.

The restaurant is good hotel restaurant, 4/5. Be sure to check the menu at the entrance as it does indeed vary from the online menu offerings. Breakfast/brunch- 5/5. Excellent. We requested the same server we had at a recent visit, Libby, and we were glad...we did. Not only was she personable but she she was as efficient and effective as we had remembered. We sampled the french toast, the ham omelet with potatoes (shown), the Commoner breakfast, the bagel with lox, and the sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich (shown), along with some fruit with yogurt & quinoa (shown), and breakfast potatoes during our two mornings.. Food quantity, quality and presentation met or exceeded expectations. (Note: We did find it difficult to get seated during the second morning, as the hostess wanted to put guests without reservations at the bar; so, reservations may be best for later morning brunch on the weekends.) Supper- 4/5. Very good. Our server was Yves, and he was on task. As our drinks arrived, we ordered the Crispy potato appetizer recommended by a hotel staff member, along with our entrees, a burger (shown) and a maitake risotto dish (shown). The meal proceeded in quick succession. Potatoes: great; hamburger- good (but came unaccompanied by a side, which seemed disproportionate to breakfast portion sizes.) The maitake risotto was enjoyed but is for those with a calibrated palate, as it includes the earthy mushrooms, and crunchy pine nuts. Overall, we enjoyed our three visits to this hotel dining venue, especially the breakfast. We are already planning our return visit!More

The burger was great. However, I had to stop eating the fries because they were way too salty. I came to the restaurant because they had halibut and swordfish as entrees on their web-based menu. Neither one was on the menu. Same goes for the...tomato tartine and pork belly starters. I ordered a glass of birthday bourbon, but it was not available. The server was great and personable. I am a loyal believer in Kimpton hotel restaurants, but this one missed the mark.More

We had traveled all day and were tired when we got to the hotel so opted to have dinner at The Commoner. There were not many other people dining there, but the bar area with pub seating was busy. We were seated on a rather...uncomfortable bench (with peeling leather) along the wall, and the a/c was blasting on us even though it was cold outside. We never really did get comfortable so it wasn't a good start. Our server was very professional and friendly, but nothing was extremely prompt considering the dining room was most empty. Menu selection was limited; typical prices for a city hotel. The food was OK - nothing great or special. We did not opt to have breakfast there based on this experience.More
