Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This bar is located right across from the University of Pittsburgh campus so it brings a younger crowd. I especially love their specialty shot pitchers. My favorites are the Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. The food is also so good. I love the custom grilled...cheeses and sweet potato tots. There are discounts at night too.More

Stopped in Hemingway's Cafe for a few drinks. In addition to the normal standards, they have a fun "shot pitcher" menu. The pitchers contain about 2 full drinks and some are served with things like gummy worms or pop rocks. At 4 dollars a pitcher...you can't beat it. Overall it is a good college bar.More

Was here last month. The sandwich was more bread than anything. Typical college bar food. Server was not the most attentive. Doubtful I’ll go back or recommend to anyone.

Goes there after 9pm for reduced prices. Pretty much everything on the menu will be only 5.5 dollars. Cocktails taste pretty good and food are above average.

Have been coming here for many years. Never a disappointment. Pricing geared towards the Pitt and college crowds - and yet, menu is diverse. Far from typical bar food...people of many ages can enjoy.

Went in for dinner on Saturday evening. Cocktail service was great. The food that was right was just average. When a sandwich came out wring instead of remaking it, the chef simply removed the undesirable item and sent it back. Very disappointing. When mentioning it...to the manager she proceeded to tell me I was obviously not clear enough (no egg please is pretty clear) and she actually told me they always just take off whatever the customer didn't want when that happens. Obviously that happens a lot! I proceeded to explain listening to your customers not blaming them, and the old adage the customer is always right go a long way towards good service, good reviews, and good tips. The only reason they didn't get a terrible rating was they took the sandwhich off the bill and the other food was acceptable. Guess that behavior is ok with college students, but when several of my kids are older than most of their staff that s*** doesn't fly with me.More

Went there with my niece, brother and sister-in-law. Menu was versatile and we all got something different so we could compare and share. Food was excellent and served hot. Great variety of drinks including many specialty beers. Was very enjoyable. We searched for place on...google near our hotel and decided on this one because of favorable reviews. Lived up to those reviews. Prices were good.More

As an old traveling business guy, Hemmingway's was a great spot to be surrounded by a young energetic crowd. Not high end cuisine but good bar food served up at very reasonable prices. If you are staying in this part of the city Hemmingway's is...worth a visit. Don't be an old grump. Surround yourself with college student having a great time.More

Taking my daughter to look at Pitt...tired after a long drive Nd it’s one of the few places near campus that actually has tables with waitress service...wife’s salad was good...my fish sandwich was good but the fries were kinda cold...cole slaw was good...daughter’s tortellini was...the best of the three - but very rich...beer and food are both plentiful and cheap, if not that great...three meals and a beer was $37More

I’ve heard a lot about this place so far. So, we decided to go. After 9pm, most of the foods are just 5$ which is surprising how cheap it is. The amount of foods are really good and enough. I ordered Miley Cyrus drink too,...which is awesome 😎 Highly recommend this place.More

We went to Hemingway's after visiting Pitt and looking for local places on TripAdvisor. We walked by it twice somehow but are glad we kept looking. We were asked if we were going to drink and since I was with a minor, we were seated...in the front, away from the bar. At 2:30 it wasn't crowded and we had a good meal. Had Pulled Pork Fries as an appetizer which ROCKED. My ABC wrap had avocado, bacon, cheddar with grilled chicken and was excellent (added fries on the side to take home vs. coleslaw). Daughter had the Fresco grilled sandwich which she loved - fresh mozzarella, pesto, roasted red peppers and a balsamic glaze. We brought them home and had them for lunch the next day. Observations - It's not a "pub" or cafe atmosphere - it's a college bar. Sports on the TVs, small tables along the side of the bar and in the back, tables for up to 6 in the front. It would be wildly busy when school's in session - which was made clear since a bouncer was there on a quiet afternoon. I wouldn't bring my underage kids in there for a meal when it's rocking. -Draft beer selection is huge which you'd expect. -Menu includes burgers, salad and pizza but the sandwiches and apps are where they are most creative. -Most of the menu was $5 between 2pm and 4pm. Serious deal... -Definitely want to try the Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese the next time (It would have been too much with the pulled pork fries we'd already ordered) So to net it out - definitely great food and beer esp for a bar, good service, reasonable pricing that becomes great pricing if you get the $5 deal, decent atmosphere.More

I took a student I was mentoring to lunch. I told him to pick a place -- he picked Hemingway's. The food came out quickly. The portions were large and filling. The waitress was very pleasant. And the check came out to $11.17. I figured...there must have been a mistake, so I left the waitress a $20, just in case. Then, it turned out that if you went between certain hours, the entrees are $5. Whoa.More

This long established college bar/restaurant has changed just enough with the times. Great place for lunch, lots of choices, I had BBQ sandwich, with sweet potato fries, good service, cozy atmosphere.

As it was during break Hem's was not crowded at all. Good food selection, attentive staff. During the "season", the place must rock. Open space layout.
