Ordered the crab BLT Out came a giant stack of bread 6 inches high ! After dissecting it, I realized it was a huge sandwich cut in half.. strike one -abysmal presentation After biting through the thick greasy bland bread, I encountered what I later...determined to be bacon- it was so tough I could not bite through it… my curiosity peaked… I separated a piece of the bacon and attempted to knaw through it, but it was impossible to penetrate. SWING AND MISS! The crab did not complement the sandwich at all, as it was greasy and off color… I then attempted to cleanse my pallet with a bite of coleslaw Very runny, heavily dressed, and with the taste of aged vinegar! Inedible! I promptly sent the dish back and decided not to order anything else The other members of my party had crab Mac, lobster roll and coleslaw w/ 2 drinks The waiter was proud to announce that he wasn’t charging me for the dish I returned… but the bill still came to $99w/tip$120 dine at your own risk !! I will start by saying that the staff was very friendly and the food was good. They had several different raw oysters to choose from and someone that shucked them right in front of you. All was well. We had 14 raw oysters and the...steam pot (shared) + 2 Narragansett’s each. The bill was $200. I get inflation, but that felt like a lot.More

I stayed at a hotel down the street and needed a late-night bite. I ordered the Crab grilled cheese. The sandwich was very good with lots of cheese and Crab on homemade bread. The place is small and was very busy, but I found seating...at the bar.More

Wasn’t even hungry, but I stopped by on a walk with my dog and sat outside in the 20 degree weather under the heated lamps, so that should tell you a few things. Lots to choose from here. Lot of oyster combos to choose from,...which you can’t get anywhere else in Pittsburgh. I tried the brunch burger—pictured—which has everything. They also had a collab special brew with one of the local breweries. Great spot. Something for everyoneMore

We stopped by for a quick lunch. For a placed named "Merchant Oyster Co" you'd expect good seafood, and we were not disappointed. What we did not expect was an amazing entree salad. The Popeye Salad was absolutely delicious.

My spouse and I visited Merchant Oyster Company for lunch on a Saturday afternoon in late August 2019. The restaurant/bar is open continuously from lunch through dinner on Tuesdays to Sundays and late night on Tuesdays through Saturdays (no dinner Sundays and closed Mondays). Diners...can reserve a place using the online Open Table reservation system, although walk-ins are accepted (which is how we arrived). Merchant Oyster Company opened in fall 2017 in a Lawrenceville storefront. The restaurant occupies a corner location, allowing windows on two sides of the narrow but long high-ceilinged space. Most seating is located on the ground floor (at the L-shaped bar/raw bar [with its interesting attached stools] at the food prep bar, or at stand-alone tables and chairs; some additional seating is available on the upper-level mezzanine. Huge (sometimes open) windows adjoin the indoor and outdoor spaces, where guests can dine at picnic tables. Décor is nautically themed, with exposed brick walls and lots of reclaimed wood (from boats and oars). Merchant Oyster shares ownership with Or, The Whale at Downtown’s Distrikt hotel (we ate there in fall of 2018 and 2017; see our separate review). As its name suggests, Merchant Oyster Company serves coastal seafood cuisine, including oysters and clams at its raw bar. The menu also features chowders, salads, sandwiches (including crab cakes and lobster rolls), and peel-and-eat shrimp. We shared the stuffed clam and crab cake as starters, followed by the linguini with clam sauce (also available in a half-portion) and the grilled Cuban sandwich (with a side of potato salad). We had a nice lunch at Merchant Oyster Company, seated next to the open windows where we could enjoy the lovely breeze.More

We went to the upstairs bar and it was very pleasant. The restroom was so clean it surprised me. We had some steamers and they were a bit sandy, but cooked well and served hot. The staff was attentive and the patrons who were regulars...jumped in to suggest items on the menu, etc.More

I visited Merchant Oyster Company after a meeting I had in downtown Pittsburgh. There aren’t many quality seafood places in Pittsburgh so I was really excited to visit this classic New England-style seafood house. First, I was able to go during happy hour (Tuesday through...Friday, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm), so I was able to try a number of menu items with major wallet damage. The raw oysters were fresh and tasty, and there was a very good selection. I also tried the baked oysters and the oyster shooter with vodka, and both were pretty good. However, the highlight was the New England clam chowder, which was very rich and delicious. The house draft beer is Narragansett, which went well with all the seafood. I will be back to Merchant Oyster Company very soon!More

Amazing seafood in Pittsburg, very fresh delicious oysters served on the shell in a bed of ice, recommend the variety plate. Also had the clams in linguine which was bread sopping deliciuos. The half portion is plenty. Prices a tad higher than what we normally...pay in Maryland, but worth it. Most attentive staff I have ever experienced. Good domestic and crft beer selection. Place is small, recommend reservations.More

Loved the layed back beach like atmosphere here. There were three of us on a Friday night for a 9p reservation. Outside seating was booked so we had to eat inside but that was ok because they had the side windows open and the weather...was beautiful! Peel and eat shrimp, atrichoke dip and sandwiches are delicious. Next time I want to try the Bloody Mary! Friendly and fast service as well. Parking can be hairy so make sure you have plenty of time to find parking if you choose to drive before your reservation.More

We called Merchant Oyster Company about our party of 10 before we arrived to reserve a table, at almost the exact time that we called another party of 10 came in and was seated at the table they were going to reserve for us, so...by the time we arrived they didn't have a place for us readily available. However, they decided to seat our party upstairs in the private dining area with it's own bar. This was actually ideal seating as we had a 2, 4, and 5 year old with us who were exhausted from a whole day at the zoo. It was super nice to have a private area where the kids could be kids without disturbing other guests. The guy who waited on our party was friendly and seemed to really enjoy his job. The only problem we had was we were starving and were assured that the seafood boil pot was enough for two people to share. Perhaps it's our Lancaster County appetite, but this pot was definitely not enough for two people.More

My husband and I were walking around Laurenceville and stopped to have a drink at Merchant. It was a nice day so they had outdoor tables and all the windows open. We sat at the bar and ordered a drink. Once we saw the oysters...being shucked, we decided to order a dozen. They were excellent! Cold, perfectly shucked with amazing freshness and taste. Each oyster was $3-4 dollars which is a bit high but worth it. Check out their happy hour and Sunday oyster discounts. We also had peel and eat shrimp which were so tasty and perfectly cooked and a bowl of New England clam chowder. Being from Boston, I was initially disappointed by the look of this chowder. It was brothy and not thick & creamy but the taste was very good. Rich and creamy taste with lots of clams and potato chunks. They don’t add flour. So if you your nostalgic for a traditional chowder, this is not it, but I was really happy with it because it tasted so good and was much lighter than a traditional chowder. If your also looking for a light beer to go with your seafood, they have Narragansett on tap- a cheap Rhode Island lager that reminded me of New England summers. The staff was fast and friendly. Looking forward to returning!More

Wow, this place has a great selection of fresh oysters on the menu. Not just one or two, but usually 9 or 10 varieties. And the staff are knowledgeable about them as well. It feels like you're on the coast even though you are still...in Pittsburgh and it's snowing outside. Other menu items are great. They also have a small dining room upstairs which is a little more private and there is a full bar on the second floor as well. I would pass on the ice cream sandwich for dessert. Even though it's very large, the cookie was too hard to eat so frozen!More
