This the place if you are an oyster lover! Dan and Louis Oyster Bar is the oldest family owned restaurant in Portland. Began in 1907 the restaurant has been serving oysters on the half shell as well as oysters, clams, salmon and other seafoods and non-seafoods menu items in the historic restaurant. I cannot begin to describe how absolutely the best fried oyster po-boy I had there. The bread that held the oysters was a delicacy itself. It was soft, fresh, and wonderful. The po-boy was a generous size and the oysters inside the bun that had a delicious dressing on the bread were fried to perfection. I am hungry for one again as I write this review.
My daughter who was with me had the oysters on the half which were the small, bay oysters. I ate one of hers and I don’t think you could get oysters any fresher than these were.

What a fantastic pre- dinner event we had! Four of us shared over 3 dozen oysters. The service was just terrific as were all the delicious oysters. They take great care of the oysters to keep them fresh until they’re served. Cant wait to do it again!

We ordered 2 dozen oysters and the captains platter. Everything, and I mean everything was so good. I have not had fried fish anywhere in the PNW (this includes the beach) that was perfectly fried, light and crisp, not dense and soggy like so many places. They had a great selection of oysters, served the right way. We actually went to the beach the following weekend for more oysters (thinking it would get better) oh how we were wrong, but it's great that we found this place, 10 minutes from home!

We happened across this restaurant by accident. We had been walking and sight seeing the city for most of the day and were hungry and thirsty. We sat outside so we could people watch. If it feels a little sketchy don't worry about it. We thought the same thing at first but it was just fine. Our waitress the first night was very polite and helpful. The drinks came right out. We ordered a couple items off the appraiser menu. They came out pretty quickly. The next day we were around the same area and wanted to go back because of our experience the night before. This time our waitress was the owner's wife and her daughter. They suggested the fish tacos and the clam chowder. While sipping on our screwdrivers our food came out and it was very delicious. It just may have been the best clam chowder I have ever had. The service was outstanding. I would recommend going there and for sure order the clam chowder.

The restaurant is located in a very distressed neighborhood with a lot of homeless just across the street from the restaurant. While we were not bothered the location is a big negative. There were 7 of us. One got a shrimp salad that was well prepared and presented. One got a large fried chicken sandwich and enjoyed it. Four got various various fried entrees with French fries that were quite good. I had fresh catch salmon blackened on rice and vegetables. The salmon was dry and had limited flavor. The rice was barely warm and starchy. The bar area and adjacent dining area wash noisy with crashing plates and silverware being gathered for cleaning. Service was good

We came here our last night in Portland. It was a short walk from our hotel in the Pearl District. I agree with other reviewers that the neighborhood is not the best but Louis and Don's was worth the dose of reality we experienced and we never felt unsafe. The restaurant is well appointed and shows its family orientation. The maritime, seafood and family history is amazing and looking at photos and news articles and memorabilia really added to our growing knowledge of Portland's history. We were craving oysters and Dan & Louis did not disappoint. The oysters were fresh and excellent, served with tasty muniere and cocktail sauces and fresh horseradish. The draft IPA beer was perfect. We also had the Seafood Cioppino, the clam chowder, and the baby shrimp cocktail over lettuce, all of which were so fresh and tasty. Our server Holly was a pro, friendly, efficient and very welcoming. Please don't be put off by the neighborhood, the restaurant is a gem that you will definitely enjoy!

Well this isn't a place you can easily describe. It really needs to be seen to believe. The walls are loaded with nautical themed decorations. The staff were very welcoming and we got the luxury of sitting next to a cute service dog. We only came in for the oysters so it wasn't a long visit. We each had a drink and a half dozen of the coldest, freshest oysters. So delicious! Dan & Louis was a recommendation and so worth it. If we make it back to Portland, we will be stopping in again!

Went it to get a couple of cups of clam chowder. Made a mistake and gave the waiter a 50 instead of a 20 for a $16 bill. Told him to keep the change thinking it was a $20. Nothing from the server that I was giving a $34 tip. Obviously my fault, but you expect more honesty from the establishment. Stupid mistake on my part compounded by a dishonest server.

If you love historic restaurants with a rich family legacy, Louis and Dan Oyster Bar is a must-visit. We had the pleasure of meeting Kai, the 5th generation “in training,” who shared stories about the restaurant’s history. Hearing about his great-great-great grandfather’s plate collection added a charming, personal touch to our dinner.
The food was equally memorable. I ordered the sockeye salmon special, and it was perfectly cooked, fresh and delicious. The Parmesan oysters were another highlight – yummy and savory.
You’ll love it here.

We came here in Late February right before all the Covid lockdowns. So this was pre-Covid so not sure about their Covid protocols. But I can tell you the Oyetsrers were amazing. The service was great. I lived in Portland for 18 years but did not come to this local institution until after I moved. It is like having dinner in a little piece of history. So if you like oysters you will love this place

Really great restaurant. Excellent relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff. Tasty food. So rare to find a place like this. The restaurant scene seems dominated by big boring chains. It is refreshing to find a place with character in the heart of the city. Try to visit at happy hour.

Had an excellent meal at this restaurant - the oldest family owned restaurant in Portland. Loved reading about the history, but loved the crab stew even more! Can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu. I'll be making this a regular stop whenever visiting Portland.
