Steak 'n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company's name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word "steak" stood for steakburger. The term "shake" stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. No more wait staff, kiosk ordering

There no longer are hostesses and wait staff. You enter and order and pay by kiosk. You then take a seat, and when your order number is gruffly and loudly called by the kitchen staff, your tray is set on the counter and you come pick it up. The food is still as expected, very good, but service has changed drastically. Not really a complaint, as everything was satisfactory, it is just different than how it used to be.

Nice drive thru. Food just OK.

Stopped here on a snowy day for lunch and used the drive thru. Fast friendly service but the food was just OK. The burgers were small and rather bland. Not many fries in the order and they were way too salty. The shake was very good. Prices weren't bad. Better options nearby.

Good food. Have to order from a tablet there is no waitress to take order. But quality of food is still good and great shakes. But was very cold inside. Was 38 degrees and inside was around 65.

Decent service at a decent price

As opposed to other reviews from around this time, our service was pretty good. Went to the counter, ordered our food. In well under 10 minutes, we are out the door with our burgers, fries, and drinks. Better burgers than most places, good fries, and better shakes than almost anywhere else anymore.

I stopped in for lunch as I’m working today in Marion. My goal was to enjoy a steak dog but it didn’t happen. I sat at the counter and was totally ignored. One lady came up to the counter to cash out a couple and never acknowledged me. Ultimately I left unserved. This was a terrible experience and I doubt that I will return. Oh yea, they weren’t that busy and poor service is most likely the reason why.

no money to make change

Food was good, waiter was great. The only problem I had was when I went to pay for our meal. There was not enough money to make change. Bill was $10.82, I paid with a $20.00. Cashier gave me a $10.00 bill back as there was not enough money to make change. This seems to be poor management if there isn't enough money to do business. I went to the Meijer store next door and asked them to change a $5.00 bill so I could go back and give the waiter his tip and extra change so the till would not be short. The waiter and waitress shouldn't be shorted their tips because management didn't have enough cash to do business. The poor cashier was asking employees if they had any ones. Please address this issue at this store.

Doesnt deserve a star

My son and I went here for dinner. The waiter took our order and brought us our drinks. Then he disappeared. Another waiter was handling his tables. We waited for 15 minutes then watched as our food sat on the warmer for another 15 minutes. They attempted to present ot to us and I told them it was sitting up there forever. They offered to make a new meal. ( well yeah, please do). People sitting around us had been seated after us and they were all done eating and leaving. While waiting another 20 minutes for our food I asked to speak to a manager. She came out to our table I told her what was going on and she did not apologize, offer a free meal or a discount or otherwise. Terrible service. I will never go back.

Very very bad (wish I could rate less than 1)

They made us pull up and park and wait on our food. 25 minutes later they brought it out to us. The milkshakes had as much on the outside of the cups as they did in them. The sandwiches were thrown together and very messy not to mention cold. This place is not fast food, not good food, not good service. When I called in the manager had no answers for our experience. Very poor experience. By the way this is the 5th time in a row that we have had a bad experience here. We will never go back. Take your money to a real restaurant and eat. I promise any sit down restaurant in Marion will be better and faster than this steak and crap.

Employees Don’t Care

I stopped at Steak & Shake this morning for breakfast. As I stood waiting to be seated I couldn’t help noticing that there were more employees than customers in the restaurant. Nonetheless, I waited, and waited, and waited for someone to acknowledge me. Just as I was about to leave, am employee finally offered to seat me. I sat at my booth and waited, and waited, and waited. No server came, so I got up, put on my coat and left the restaurant. Obviously, the employees at this restaurant have no clue about serving customers and clearly demonstrate they just don’t care. Terrible.

Burgers and shakes!

Not only were the steak burgers awesome with a milkshake, but they are open 24/7! They accommodated my family of 13 with no problem and we all had a great time!

Dirty and slow

Yes it was right before Christmas but a 2 hour wait was a bit long. Then when one of my children dropped something, my wife said well that is gone forever, because she was not fishing it out of the 2inches of dirt and garbage on the floor under the table. The waitress was slow and blamed the kitchen. Our milk shakes were melted by the time we got them. Whos fault is that? No silverware, then we hear her arguing with the guy next to us about how she did not mess up the order, he ordered a hot dog and she brought a hamburger. Then the guy never got a hot dog because they waited 2 hours as well he said forget it. Need to do much better Steak n Shake.

Open for Christmas!!!!

I had a quick bite to eat today on Christmas. It opened up at 11:05? (instead of 11??) I had a great cup of coffee, a great server, and an OK chicken salad. The chicken had a little funny taste to the normal chicken taste I get on my salads, and I always order chicken salads at other restaurants. My server, don't know her name, was exceptional and nice. Good experience but I wish they would have offered breakfast!!!!!

It’s a good choice for fast food.

Occasionally I get hungry for a bacon burger. This is one of my “go to” places to feed my need. What I really appreciate is that when I request xtra xtra crisp bacon that is exactly what I get. They have never said we can’t do that which makes me happy. Their food is consistent, I like their skinny fries and their milkshakes are wonderful. Their prices are fair and reasonable so whenever I am traveling and hungry for a fast food burger I stop at Steak and Shake. The Marion location matches up to all of those I have visited in my travels.
