Delicious, but a bit too saucy

I live out of town, Whenever remotely near Karavalli, I am sure to dine there, as the food is amazing. The flavors are great, portion size generous and prices are right. We (two of us) ordered three entrees, with the intent on taking left overs home, as the food is so good. This time, each of the entrees were mostly sauce. One of the dishes was a dumpling dish, another a vegetable dish and the third a paneer dish. Again, absolutely extraordinary flavors, but the there were few dumpling, veggies or chunks of paneer. We took three filled containers home. When we prepare the leftovers, we will be adding some of our own ingredients! In spite of this sauce imbalance, I will indeed dine at Karavalli again!

Delicious, authentic food beautifully presented in a lovely atmosphere

This was not my first time at this restaurant, but they have renovated since the last time I ate here and it is absolutely beautiful. The food was always delicious but the menu is so varied now, with dishes I have never seen at any local Indian restaurant. Each of us (3) chose very well, thanks to the explanations offered by staff. The food was absolutely scrumptious…each dish perfectly seasoned and accompanied by various sauces. The bread was hot and buttery. My chicken, with mango purée and cream, was one of the best dishes I have tasted in ages. My husband and friend both felt the same about their choices. The price was so reasonable for all the food we had! I can’t wait to return!

Terrible service

We have previously enjoyed all our visits to this restaurant and the food is very bood, but recently we had a small 3 generation family gathering there to celebrate a graduation. The service was unbelievably bad: so slow to take appetizer orders, very slow food arrival to the table, never checked if our orders were ok, brought ice instead of water to the table, didn't take follow up drink orders despite a request, showed up with the bill without asking if we'd like to order dessert. So disappointing. Communication is key in a business like this, but it doesn't seem to be a priority here. It was embarrassing too in front of our older family members who had not eaten there before. We had invited them for a celebration and it felt like a bad dream. Won't likely return.

Very disappointed with latest meal

I have eaten at Karavalli's for many years, and it has been my go-to place for Indian food. I ordered our last meal online for takeaway. My favorite dish is their bhamia koota lamb, which I have eaten there for years and always ordered as medium heat. Last night I ordered this dish as well as chicken kadhai medium. Both dishes were way way hotter than ever before, to the point of being inedible. The mild dishes we ordered , chicken saag and vegetable amwala were both delightful. Again, a huge disappointment for them to get it so very wrong

I ordered my meal at 3:27 from work for a 5:00 pickup. I got there at 5:00 and the only customer there.The proprietor stopped me at the door and I told him I had an online order and gave him my name.He told me to go outside and he'll bring it out to me. I said okay my car is right there as I parked in front of the door.I sat there for almost an hour while watching 5 customers pull up walk in and walk out instantly with their orders.I finally saw 2 indian guys walking in there and asked them if my order was ready and they were customers I guess.Then the door host comes out and asks me what I want.I said you told me to wait in my car I've been waiting here an hour.He asked my name and I told him and he came out with my order with no explanation nor apologies.Ive never been so insulted in my life.I ordered 25 dollars worth of food that was cold.And I spent 14 dollars on a meat sampler that had one little meat samosa and 4 little pieces of chicken and the rest was naan I didn't need because I had also ordered naan on the order.No sheek kabob or nothing. An apology and a free meal is the only thing that will make me go back to this place with a snooty door man. Go to the Shalimar.

the worst experience I have had at a restaurant

I placed a simple order of 5 items (idli, mulligatawny soup, chickpea salad, paneer kurchan, and naan) at 6:15 pm for pickup an a Saturday. I was told it would be ready at 7:15 pm. When I reached the restaurant at that time with my 12 yr old to pick up the food, they said it was not yet ready. We waited at the bar, then waited, and waited some more. People walked in, were seated, were served, and we still waited. I asked a few times when I could catch someone's attention (there was no bartender and everyone else seemed to be very good at avoiding customers), they said it would be ready soon. After an hour and a half, at 8:45 pm, someone came to ask if I was waiting for anything (!). Got our food finally with some additional attitude, and it was not worth even a 1-second wait. The idlis were stale and they were stuck to the paper wrapping them. The mulligatawny soup had little/no salt. I have been going here since before they expanded and they used to be good then. They have certainly lost me as a customer. You have been warned, go at your own risk.

We ordered take out. After a few minutes they called back to say one of the items was not available. They said that the other 2 items (idli & vada) would be ready in 30 minutes. When I went to pick up after 30 minutes, it was not ready and it took an additional 20 minutes before take out was ready. The food was stale and was not all that great. Very disappointed.

Not good quality of food.Very poor service of waiters.

Very unhappy with the quality of food items.Certain items such as fish wereover& were not replenished.Even the dessert was very poor quality& very little.We were a group of 8 ,yet none of us got the fish fry , even after reminding them.Gratuity of $ 20 was included in the bill, but the Service wss deplorable.In other restaurants , Gratuity is given by the customers , according to the Service given. We shall never recommend this restaurant to anyone. Moreover, in the Women's Washroom there was no toilet paper or soap in the soap dispenser.

1. Food was okay not very tasty, the chicken malabar special dish was served with veg biryani which was not good. 2. The table was quite small and their was no space to move our stuff around. 3. Mutton biryani was good 4. Fish was bad

Wonderful Every Visit

We have gone to Karavalli a number times and it is wonderful each visit. We drive 68 miles up from the mid Hudson valley. One of my Indian customers said it was better than the Indian restaurants our area and he was right.

I came with a friend when I was visiting from out of town for lunch. I am usually not a buffet person but the vegetable dishes were excellent, the nan Delish and the service attentive. Price unbelievably reasonable.

Great Indian Buffet

My sister and I were shopping in Latham and wanted something different for lunch. I had tried Indian food on a cruise ship and enjoyed it so we did a search and Karavalli came up with 4.5 stars. We got there 5 minutes before they open and sat in the parking lot. We knew the food must be good as cars started pouring into the lot and everyone piled out and went in to the Karavalli. We were greeted and taken to a window table and given a drink menu. Our waters were poured and our bread delivered. I should have taken a picture of the food because I cannot remember the names, The fried onions were wonderful. I loved the Eggplant in a tomato sauce. There were 10 hot options on the buffet and a salad and dessert on the cold side. A few times the line was long but if you sit and wait a few minutes the line clears out.I had know idea how the dessert worked until I watched a seasoned patron put the spiced carrot mixture into a bowl and added the cheese in sweet milk on top. I love chocolate for dessert but this wasn't bad. For a lunch buffet with 2 drinks and a tip this only cost us $16 a person which I do not think is bad. We will go back again.

Made reservations for 6:30 on a recent Saturday night to dine with friends! We were seated promptly although the restaurant was packed with diners and those waiting for their pick-up orders. Seating is tight and once you're in, you're basically in your seat for the night! Service was somewhat slow which was to be expected considering how busy they were. There was a mix-up as one of us ordered a lamb biryani and an egg biryani arrived instead! It took about 15 minutes to get that corrected which was somewhat annoying! The servings are generous, the quality superb, and the price is right! Highly recommend you get there early or late as half of the restaurant was empty by 8 pm and be sure to make a reservation in advance!
