We had such a strange experience at this place, it is hard to determine if I recommend it or not. We probably should have left when we saw the menu, but instead tried to make it work. The menu for a "village tavern" is not what I expected. Certainly is not tavern type food at all. Unique servings for those Who like different types of recipes. But if you prefer traditional style food or are a "meat and potato" guy this is not your place. My dinner was pretty good: My wife's absolutely terrible. As selections for her tastes were minimal, She selected a Salad that was to be topped with thin slices of steak. What she got was a small amount of salad topped with chunks of tough beef of some kind, and small onions that had been in some sauce, all surrounded by french fries. It was liked they just used stuff up and top of a small salad. In fairness to the waitress who realized my wife wasn't eating much, she first offered us a free dessert, then after talking with the kitchen, did not charge us for my wife's meal. So that was a nice gesture, but not sure why all of this happened or why her meal clearly didn't match up what was on the menu. Clearly ask to look at the menu before you decide to eat here.

Sometimes you come across a restaurant that just blows you away. The VillageTavern Restaurant in Hammondsport New York is that place. We were told that the previous owners retired, and the new owner brought in a chef, John Mims, who has previously worked in New Orleans and Philadelphia. Our meal started with complimentary homemade bread that came with a superb homeade pesto dipping sauce. The dipping sauce should be sold as it was that good. My husband ordered the four-course Tasting Menu for $35. First course was a chilled asparagus salad, second course was a blackened shrimp and sea bass topped w/lump crabmeat butter sauce served over Creole roasted squash, third course pan-roasted pork tenderloin topped w/smoked bacon gravy and served w/smoked potato salad, and the fourth course was assorted berries topped w/zabaglione sauce and cookie crumbles. All four courses were delicious, with special attention to a beautiful presentation. The chef informed us that he changes the Tasting Menu weekly. I had the slow roasted pork shoulder and grilled Andouille sausage over Cajun jambalaya for $25 and it was also delicious and ample enough for two meals. Our server, Cheri, was very attentive and a pleasure to talk to. If you are a steak lover, Monday is steak night. We live in Rochester New York, and it was well with the trip. We will be back for sure.

I had checked out the local restaurants online and decided to book a reservation for two. Just before we went my wife noticed the FB post of the weekend tasting 4 course menu for $35. We both ordered it and loved the courses. Generally you receive very small portions but these were full size. We had to take the desert to go. Not only a great value but wonderful dishes.

This was a horrible meal and the most expensive entree on the menu for 36 bucks. Re-heated in a microwave well done prime rib over hash browns and creamed can spinach. Served in 5 minutes. Sound as good as it sounds? Completely awful. This owner/chef should be embarrassed to serve such a hot mess. If you have to staff the restaurant on a Thursday with another in the kitchen and a bartender holding down the rest of the restaurant, close for another month until you offer a quality product for 36$. I should have ordered a the cheese burger the guy next to me bought. Then maybe I may not have left infuriating that someone who calls themself a chef actually had nerve to serve that crap in a bowl. I ate 3 bites, showed the bartender. paid the bill plus 20% because the bartender didn't serve it, and left. No need to discuss it with th guy who served this garbage causing a seen and guaranteed his response would escalate an already bad situation. I have a summer house Hammondsport and was coming through town on business. I will never support that restaurant again while that guy owns it. Good luck, "chef." I suggest going to a limited menu during the slow season where you can maintain a certain level of quality to justify your prices. You are spewing bad karma.

We hadn't been to the Village Tavern in many years but heard there was new ownership and went to check it out. So glad we did! Four of us had a wonderful meal. 3 of us had the prime rib - a very large cut, well prepared & delicious. They also have a great wine list heavy with great local options like Weis, and have a great draft list including favorites like Ardennes and Abandon that were very reasonably priced. Ambiance is casual and cozy. Our server Cheri was terrific and made us feel very welcome. We will be back!

I have experiended many times over incredible delicious meals created by this artisan of the kitchen but last night was a new pinnacle of delight! I tried the seafood lasagna which should be renamed “Heaven-Under the Sea”! My wife had the short ribs and all I heard was the “mmmm” as she experienced each delectable bite! The portions were large - I asked for a complimentary wheelchair to help me get to the car! If you desire a special culinary experience, make a trip to the Village Tavern and specifically ask for Cheri who’s special loving personality and detail in perfect service combined to create the experience you all want to have when seeking a special evening! I’d give this night 7 stars if I could!

Absolutely loved my experience at Village Tavern Restaurant & Inn in Hammondsport, NY. The food was incredible —each dish was crafted with care and packed with flavor. The ambiance of the inn was cozy and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind. The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring a memorable dining experience and also a great music. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great food and a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely a five-star gem! I had an outstanding experience with our waitress, Heather, who truly made our visit worthwhile. Her service was impeccable—she was attentive, friendly, and had a great knowledge of the menu, offering thoughtful recommendations. Despite being busy, she maintained a positive attitude and made sure we felt well taken care of throughout our meal. Her professionalism and warmth really enhanced our dining experience. Heather is a true asset to the team, and her excellent service deserves five stars!

We came to Hammondsport NY to visit some friends from Denton TX. We landed at this village tavern for lunch and some visiting time with our friends. What a wonderful place to eat and drink. Dinah our waiter was very helpful in navigating the menu and even recommended a few items. All the foods were excellent. The mushroom appetizer was wonderful. A bit pricey but worth it. I would recommend to everyone. We could have spent the afternoon there visiting and drinking. The atmosphere was perfect. But they had people waiting to get in, so we had share and leave.

Hidden Gem in the village of Hammondsport!! The Crab Bisque was delicious with a good amount of crab, and the flavor was excellent! We also enjoyed the Shrimp and Grits, again a generous portion with a lot of well cooked shrimp, definitely not over cooked!! The prime rib was tender and cooked well and the spinach in a white cream sauce was excellent! Our only complaint is that it is 2 hours from home!! The wait staff (Kayla) was knowledgeable and attentive! We are already looking forward to visiting this restaurant again!!

I’ve never been to New Orleans, but my expectation is great food and the southern charm of folks that call you honey and mean it—Village Tavern was both, easy. Our server Kyla was super personable and attentive, and helped us narrow down their extensive menu. The sea food stew was incredible (this was not the name, I am not typically a foodie or a writer of food reviews, but this place was too good I have to!). There are SO many seafood dishes I still want to try, I can’t wait to on the next Finger Lakes visit!

We dined at this restaurant our last night in town. My wife chose ahi tuna and crispy coconut shrimp that were served over coconut rice and included string beans. I countered with blackened salmon with praline sauce over mashed potatoes and smothered collard greens. Each dish turned out to very good so a return visit on a future trip is assured.

We enjoyed a delicious meal on Sunday evening. Our server, Cheri, was excellent. Under new ownership, Chef John Mimms has updated the menu. We selected the four-course dinner special, which was superb. The fresh watermelon, feta, and balsamic demi glaze salad were refreshing on this hot summer evening. Second was the to-die-for tender crab prepared to perfection. The main entree was tenderloin over smashed potato, finished with a delightful reduction that melted in our mouths. The meal was completed with creamy cheesecake topped with fresh cherries. We frequent the Village Tavern Restaurant every summer and will be sure to return and recommend it to family and friends. Bon Appetit!

As a New Orleans native, I have to say this place is authentic. My husband's family is from Hammondsport and Canandaguia area. We are up here every few years on vacation. The new owners have been around for a year but our server Cheri is a tried and true. Service was impeccable! But now on to the food. Our first night at this fabulous restaurant, my husband had the "tasting" and I indulged in a jambalaya and a truly divine bread pudding with caramelized bananas. I can say that this was one of our top five meals of the year (and we are retired and travel often). We made it a point to come back to Hammondsport to enjoy a fabulous meal once again before heading home to Charlotte, NC. John, the chef and owner, was happy to oblige with a New Orleans feast to make me feel at home. We started with boiled crawfish and New Orleans BBQ shrimp and grits. He brought us a seafood gumbo that made me rethink my famous award winning gumbo. We indulge in the main course of breaded veal in a reduced tomato puree and finished with a cherries jubilee. We were there in the off season when school is still in session so a little less busy in the beginning of June. It is worth the wait! The food is fabulous. Plan the evening and have a few cocktails. It is worth the wait! Thank you, John, for a fantastic experience. Yours truly, Cajun Queen Carolyn

What a pleasant surprise! We were in Hammondsport for the Mavericks concert at Point of the Bluff. After a 5 hour drive we were hungry & thirsty and just stumbled upon this eclectic establishment. Both appetite and thirst were satisfied with excellent cocktails and exquisite food topped off with outstanding service from Cheri and relaxing blues on the stereo. I recommend this place with highest praise. Great people and premier product.

The appetizers and entrees were creative and our service professional (Heather) was knowledgeable and friendly. We’ll definitely be back and will exploring staying in one VT’s inn rooms. Thanks for a great dining experience!
