Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Found this spot while driving out to Wallkill Nature Reserve and had to stop by on our way back home. We were not disappointed! This bakery first caught our eye just from the architecture on the outside reminding us of our days in Europe! The inside is just as cute and it can seem it is a happening place for locals. We totally could have spent more while we were here if we had it in the budget! We got three pastries for a very fair price and the service was great, everyone was polite! Would highly recommend!

I enjoy going to the Holland American Bakery when I am up in Sussex, NJ. It is one of those New Jersey classic businesses with a theme. It has the Windmill right outside.
What’s inside is an array of baked goods that you will enjoy. What I like is that product is freshly made and always good.
I love their Blueberry filled doughnuts and treated myself to a Cinnamon covered Croissant. I brought them home and ate them the next day. What a treat! On top of the quality of their product, the prices are very fair and the service is always friendly.

They have a wonderful lemon meringue pie, chocolate creme pie, pumpernickle bread, and the cronuts are super soft and fresh. Their a bit pricey but they have quality desserts. I wish I had one near where I live, I go when I visit my sister.

I was a customer of this bakery for years and grew up with their treats and cakes for special occasions. When it came time for my Grandfather's 90th birthday, I knew I wanted to use them! Picking up the cake was fine, but they didn't want to open it and only showed me the bottom half. Something in my gut told me to look at it fully when I got home. It was not at all designed like how we discussed in regards to color scheme, but I could live with that. The issue was it was the wrong message.
Thank God I did because it said happy birthday Grandma!!! This was the absolute wrong person and would have been a depressing memory for him on his birthday as she is no longer with him. Now, I had to return to the bakery to get this fixed. Not once did any of the employees apologized for the mistake of inconvenience, putting me behind schedule to arrive to the party.
The "manager" at the time took 20+ minutes to fix it and never apologized once. When I pointed out it was their mistake, she blamed the girl who took the order and did not leave good instructions. Train your employees better or have a prewritten form so this doesn't happen to anyone else. The attitude from the employees was beyond rude over the experience as if I was asking too much to have the cake I paid for addressed to the right person.
This bakery was my favorite, but I will never give them my business again. I expected better from them.

Having recently returned from Amsterdam, we were anxious to try this bakery. We were visiting family who lives nearby so we mentioned we had heard about it and our family indicated they often come here. (why didn't they tell us= were they trying to keep it for themselves -LOL) We bought some Stroopwaffels, Linzer tarts (so buttery and smooth) and Speculas (crispy) cookies. All were wonderful and transported us back to Amsterdam and our enjoyment there. Many bakeries try to recreate these items but do so unsuccessfully; these were spot on in flavor match. There is also Dutch merchandise items. If you are looking for authentic Dutch baked goods. this is the place to go.

This is a local bakery that has the most amazing products. There is hardly a Sussex County person who has not been if for nothing else other than their cronuts.

After driving through the area we decided to pick up a few baked goods to take with us to a dinner invitation that evening and also for our breakfast the next day. For dinner we chose the cheesecake which looks good in the cabinet. We asked for the blueberry topping although they offer you a number of toppings that you can have on the cake or in a container on the side to put on later. We must say that the general consensus of the cheesecake was that it was not the typical New York type cheesecake. Rather than being soft and cheesy it was more like cake and kind of stale. On the other hand the Apple crumb coffee cake that we bought for breakfast was delicious and we all agreed on that review. We also picked up some old fashioned cake Donuts which also hit the spot. The counter ladies were very helpful and friendly and did their best to provide us the best information they could on the different items in the display cases. We also bought a box of windmill cookies but have not yet tried those. Additionally the restaurant also has some quaint gifts that involve Dutch themes such as windmill pot trivet or hot plate, some wooden shoes and other such items. All in all an interesting place to stop and most of the pastries look very good and I'm sure they were. Check it out!

I stopped by the Holland-American Bakery on my way up Route 23 for a snack and noticed the Windmill in the front of the store. That is a unique feature.
The baked goods are really good and very reasonable. I had two doughnuts, one lemon and one blueberry filled and both were perfectly cooked and tasted delicious. The blueberry filled was with fresh blueberries. They were deep-fried and cooked more like crullers which made them crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. They made a nice dessert.
The service is very friendly and they will help you narrow down the many choices. The eclairs look amazing as well. There is also plenty of parking and a place to eat your desserts outside the bakery. It is a nice surprise and a nice place to dtop after a long drive.

Every time I walk into the bakery, the staff is always smiling and always very friendly. Baked goods have always been fresh and the price is so reasonable, it's almost a steal. Coffee, it really is only 25 cents for a cup of coffee. Not hidden fees. I love their chocolate chip cookies.... THE BEST!

If you come to Sussex, you need to stop at the Holland American Bakery. In the morning their $3 breakfast sandwiches, a cup of coffee and a dozen cookies and pastries to go will make for the perfect day! On Friday, (I believe at 4 pm), they have a fish and chips truck outside to benefit local charities. In May, come to take pictures of the hundreds of tulips around the windmill.

Unfortunately we are not Dutch so I don't know the names of the goodies we get, have been coming here for years & we are not local, it's THAT good. I have yet to have anything that was not perfection. Our fav's? The cupcakes, the cronuts, so good, the butter cake, the windmill cookies, the qua? cookies & my most recent discovery the almond cookies, have 2 in the freezer now. I personally am not a crumb cake fan, but understand that is very good as well.
They also have a great assortment of Dutch candies, cocoa, & lovely gift items. We love this place.
Please note they are never open on Sunday.
