Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place is amazing. A really fun environment with authentic Mexican food. The chips and two sauces they serve you as an appetizer are delicious and quite unique. The chips are made fresh. All entrées are large and come with a small salad. BYOB.

This was a tough review to write, as the food was reasonably priced, tasted great and nice portions....although it took an extraordinarily long time to get our food. I ordered a vegetarian dish with no meat. I haven't eaten any meat in almost 2 years and also appreciated the Vegan Burrito on the menu. When It arrived (fajitas), I began piling the toppings into the tortillas and eating. Halfway through I noticed what looked like small strips of beef in the middle of my plate...sure enough it was. No one at the table ordered beef. I attached photos and of course was quite upset, but nicely mentioned it to the waitress and she took it away along with half of my food I didn't eat. She came back saying she talked to the cook and they would give me half off. I accepted it, as I just wanted to leave, but was absolutely outraged they charged me for the meal at all! I would not return here again.

We have eaten here a number of times and have had consistently good meals. Would definitely recommend and will continue giving them our business for Mexican food. Really like their breaded chicken cutlet (pounded very thin and is very crispy), which comes with various meals.

I was extremely disappointed with service and food quality recently when I ordered two large trays of food for a party. I had placed the order one week in advance and asked if they could deliver the food. I prepaid it and they advised it would be delivered. On the day of the party the food was to be delivered at 4:00pm. At 4:45pm I called and asked if the food was on its way and they advised that yes it was and they should be at my house soon. Another 45 min pass and still nothing so I called once more for them to say the same thing. It’s now almost 6:15 and we call again for them to say they same. I live less then 10 min from the restaurant, so I was not sure why it was taking this long. The food finally arrived and the tacos were burnt and the chicken fajita platter that I ordered barely had chicken and the tortillas were never provided. Needless to say I will never order from here again.

Nice atmosphere and food presentation, BUT that’s where it ends. This is a Mexican restaurant which doesn’t serve cervesa or margaritas! 🤯 I know mind blown right! I ordered queso that I believe was nacho cheese sauce from a can. I saw other patrons with burritos topped with the same queso 🤦🏼‍♀️ Wait staff was inattentive except to take your plate when you were still eating. There was no soap in the ladies restroom or hand wash station either.

It has been a full year of no restaurant's since COVID took over our lives. After getting our shots we picked our favorite restaurant, La Jarochita. Boy did we miss our Little Lady From Veracruz. I indulged in the fried whole tilapia and my wife had carne asada. There service and food are still five star. If you have not been and live within south Jersey, this is real Mexican food. You won't regret the trip. Lastly, let me mention that they do observe all COVID restrictions which helps you feel comfortable.

Long story short - excellent Mexican restaurant in Manahawkin. My GF and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience and we will definitely return. The service, our meals, and entire experience was excellent.

Some of the best authentic Mexican cuisine I have ever had. Enormous portions, everything seasoned perfectly and delicious. Absolutely family and pickey-eater friendly. Can’t miss.

My friend and I fell upon this place while thrift store shopping. It’s authentic Mexican, and the server was willing to explain dishes to us. We had a dish that had all the meats along with the sides that the server reccomended. It was awesome!

I’m guessing that the handful of negative reviews about this place were written by people who’ve never been to high end restaurants in Mexico. OK, it’s not white linen tablecloths and napkins so it doesn’t get 5 stars but the food is absolutely incredible and creatively presented by a delightful wait staff. Go big and try the house specialties, or go for more simple food like tacos. My favorite desert is the deep fried flour tortillas with chocolate, honey, and ice cream. BYO, and remember Mexican food doesn’t go too well with light and fragile white wine. I’ve eaten here at least 6 times and expect to go about 2 times a month forever. It’s that good.

Came here for an early dinner. It's a BYOB so we brought some beer to go with our meal. We both ordered the enchiladas and the plates, actually more like platters were enormous. Hot, fresh and huge portion. Food was tasty and enjoyable. Restaurant is decorated nicely and service was friendly and prompt. Will definitely return.

TLDR Version: 449 E Bay Ave. Great authentic Mexican food with modern twists, made in house, huge portions English Version: Starting off, the ambience here is solo very Mexican, it's like being transported south of the border. It has papel-picado hanging all over the ceiling, it has Mexican flags, it even has a live musician playing guitar & singing Spanish songs. Plus the AC was out of order the night when we visited, so I had sweat dripping down my forehead within 15 minutes, just like in Mexico. ;-) Right after we sat down, our server brought over a basket of chips & two kinds of dip, a black bean dip & another one that was dark yellow with red flecks that I thought would be cheesey, but turned out not to be, still tasty though. As an appetizer, we ordere nachos with steak, which ended up being a plate of amazing nachos smothered in cheese, a pile of guacamole, a generous amount of steak strips, a few hot pepper strips, fresh tomatoes, cilantro, & onions (I know, those are not authentic Mexican cuisine, but they've definitely been very successfully integrated into their food culture). The picture shows how huge the plate was, and it could have been a meal for me, or two smaller people. (See picture). To drink, we opted to split a(n) horchata (huge, see photo) in addition to water with lemon. I liked that our server did not simply plop down straws, but asked first, which gave us the option to decline. As our main courses, my wife ordered the empanadas, and I ordered the tacos dorados. They both arrived with generous sides of rice & black bean sauce, a little bit of lettuce, a few strips of avocado, and surprisingly, a Mexican-seasoned Schnitzel (chicken-fried cutlet of pork?).

We normally frequent a local Mexican restaurant that has been in the area for awhile. We decided to try this restaurant as we have never been and have heard good reviews from friends. Not much ambiance but La J is authentic Mexican. The place was full. The evening that we visited was hot ( it appeared that they could have had issues with the ac with the prior thunder storms and loss of power). The food was very clean and tasty and not greasy like other restaurants we have tried. The portions were plentiful and the menu offered a variety of selections. In addition, the prices were reasonable. Please note this is a BYOB! We expect to return.

Our most recent visit (having been there a few times since it opened) was disappointing. While our meal selections were delicious and well prepared with good service, the alleged dinner entertainment ruined an otherwise pleasant evening. First, as a trained vocalist and instrumentalist, the sound system here is too overpowering for the size of the restaurant. Secondly, the karaoke vocalist was absolutely tone deaf. Her off-key renditions actually made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I was tempted to actually discuss her performance with her, but polite society frowns on this. Oh well, let's hope the owners aren't her relatives?
