Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Jai-Alai is a Spanish Restaurant with flavors from the Basque region, far different than that of most restaurants found in the Newark area. Sherry, Olive Oil and Garlic are the stars here as well as regional cheeses and meats. Parking is not a challenge if you are there after 6:00, usually park right on the street. Favorites are the Stuffed Mushrooms, Escargot and Jabon with Asparagus. If you like duck this is the place for you as well as various seafood preparations. Sangria is tart - no added sugar. Always try to get here when in area with friends.

My favorite entree is the Paella, a culinary explosion of flavor in a rich, flavorful broth. Husband insists that one must order the duck. He says it’s the best he’s ever had, every time he has it. Add a pitcher of Sangria and the Chorizo appetizer and you have experienced a memorable meal prepared by the Basque owners. Only thing better than dining at Jai Lai might be going to the Basque region for a day, a week, a lifetime. Highly recommend Jai Lai.

I just had the best meal in many years. The sliced filet mignon in the wine sauce was out of this world, brought me back to the old styled restaurants as a child.. made to order food, so give yourself some time. The owner, Kathy, is kind, and Very accommodating. It was a slow rainy night, and we had time for an awesome conversation…Jai-Alai is worth the trip, on the quiet, western most part of Blackwell Street with plenty of parking. Even the coffee was fresh, I didn’t want to leave…

We have been customers of this fabulous restaurant for 20 years and there is simply no other place like it. The Basque cuisine is unlike any other… takes Spanish food to a whole different level. Several appetizers like stuffed mushrooms and chorizos in garlic sauce, and other dishes like Shrimp and chicken Jai Alai, Mariscada, and mussels in green sauce simply cannot be found this delicious anywhere else… not in Newark, not in Dover, not anywhere else!! Add to it the best Homemade Sangria, homemade desserts, scrumptious coffees and top shelf cordials, and you have a meal not matched by any other restaurant. The interior is authentically decorated, clean and the inviting. The service is impeccable. If you have not dined at the Jai Alai Restaurant in Dover, you have not experienced Spanish/Basque cuisine at its best!!

This is the third or fourth time I've been to this restaurant since 2017 (would have been more often, if not for Covid), and I'm pleased to say that it's as good as ever. The food is delicious, and it's quiet enough to talk without shouting, even on a Saturday night. This last visit, they were shorthanded, so table service was spottier than usual, but always very polite and friendly. The three people I was with were all very pleased with their dinner.

Went with large group, got sat in back room by ourselves. Food was great, service great. The chorizo was excellent as was the chicken tarragon. The greater group had chicken dishes, paella, meats. Everyone enjoyed. First time back since early 90s and was still the best Spanish around.

Family style food to share. The shrimp in garlic was delicious as was the paella. The potatoes were crisp. Service was excellent. End the meal with cafe con Lee he and flan.

Paella - only served for two or more at a cost of $30 per person - was lacking flavor. Shrimp and scallops in sherry wine sauce with garlic ($24) was a gloppy, oily mess. The broccoli and carrots served with the dish were good; potato chips were barely lukewarm. Interior is a kitschy mess - needs to be redone with "less is more". I could overlook the interior if the food were decent. Service was polite but inattentive. A small pitcher of sangria was $15. Overall it was a big tab for sub-par food and I would not go back.

I absolutely love this place. The food was delicious. Their red sauce over seafood was amazing. I’m trying the stuffed lobster next time I go in next week. The service was great, the people were so friendly and I really loved the atmosphere. Lovely little gem. I highly recommend.

We have been going there for years. It's such a great place we were married there. We set up the side dining room for the wedding & afterwards, they set it up for our dinner. It was so good, everyone stayed an longer. The food & sangria is always excellent and you will feel like family. Just make sure you have time to enjoy the experience as there is no rush to turn a table.

Difficult to find as it is on an out of the way street and the signage is small. Parking on street or in rear municipal parking lot. Inside you will see a nice bar area with some tables. The back is where the dinner seating is and it is fairly big. It is very dated but seating is comfortable. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is Spanish and was good but we have had better. Paella only served for two so we could not order something else and share. It was good but not as much food as we have had elsewhere. The couple we were with had shrimp, scallops, and rice and they enjoyed it. The sangria (We got white) was very good and they have some nice choices for dessert. I got the coffee, which was very strong but good. My wife got flan and she enjoyed it, but she stated she has had better elsewhere. There are not too many Spanish food restaurants in the area so we will probably return. It is a good place to sit and talk after eating as it is a slow pace.

A little hard to find in a slightly sketchy neighborhood. Parking is a little tricky but safe in front of the building or in their parking lot around the corner on the left. The decor inside has not changed much in 20+ years featuring the Spanish sport akin to handball but with giant baskets for hands. Family run for as long as I can remember, the recent passing of the proprietor Nick hasn’t stopped the restaurant from continuing his legacy of authentic luxury class meals with his daughter at the helm. Served only as dinner for two or more, the Paella with giant lobsters, shrimp, shellfish, chicken and chorizo is a winner there. The Mariscotda is also awesome with a brandy laced sauce. You have to try the garlic soup! It’s a cure for what ails you :-). They make sangria to order and also have a special dessert coffee made with vanilla liquore.
