This restaurant gem off the beaten path is a must-go for anyone visiting or living in Livingston or the Paradise Valley. The gourmet food was incredible, we had three courses and from start to finish, each was spot on and perfectly executed. The 8oz tenderloin with green peppercorn brandy sauce was hands down the best tenderloin I've had in Montana in over 10 years, the flavor and quality of the meat was exceptional, you could literally cut it with a butter knife. The service was great, and the hospitality of the Executive Chef taking time to visit every table was a personalized touch. The ambiance is breathtaking, with views of the mountains and the Yellowstone river makes this restaurant unmatched in the area. We will be back again, and again!

Food was good and filling. Busy place!! Short staffed due to end of season. Slightly over priced (in my opinion; $77 with tip for 2 bison burger meals, no alcohol). Owners were both cooking and bussing tables, as well as lodge registration helping too. Limited food options in the area.

We dined at Yellowstone Valley Grill after a few years' absence due to our dissatisfaction in the chef and menu changes.
A new chef and the patio had a fresh new look - especially warm and inviting on a snowy late April eve.
Four of us sampled their Oysters Rockefeller and sauteed morels that had a hearty flavorful Madeira demi sauce.
The macadamia crusted Walleye was delicious accompanied by unique and savory layers of three rice varieties. A braised Wisconsin shank of veal was prepared to perfection and the Diver Scallops were enhanced with a tangy mango relish and slight spicy kick.
The delightful ending included house made fresh mint chocolate ice cream and Huckleberry cheesecake with many sweet layers which sent us on our way quite full and satisfied.
The service was attentive and gracious. We are encouraged by the changes and look forward to the next time!

The quality, variety, and taste of the food was beyond reproach. the chef personally offered advice on food/wine pairings. The location of the restaurant is perched overlooking the banks of the Yellowstone River with the Absaroka Mountains as a backdrop and the view is jaw dropping. Outside there is a bonfire surrounded by cozy chairs and a pathway down to explore the river. In the evenings when it gets dark the sky and stars open up over you. Totally a 5 star experience Except that the glass enclosed dining area currently has no screens, fans, or AC and the dining area quickly became an oven and an acoustic sound trap. At 6:00 the outdoor temperature was in the upper 80's low 90's, and the air quality was a little hazy due to high level smoke.Inside there was no cross breeze and it was stifling. The table at the other end of the restaurant was very loud and raucous and the sound had no where to go making it extremely difficult to hear each other speak even across the table. We stripped off as many clothes as possible and made the evening work, but at a cost of over $675 for 6 people we expected to be cool enough to enjoy our meal.As our summers in the Valley continue to heat up and become smokier air conditioning is a must.

On the pro side: the hamburger entrée and the 1/2 chicken entrée were good. Also, the vegetable side dishes were beautiful, tasty, and creative. The setting on a covered patio was beautiful and the view toward the river and mountains lovely.
.
On the con side, beware very small portions. Most entrees were tapas sized, not enough for a dinner. To make matters worse, the waitress strongly urged us (scolded us) to share these tiny entrees with everyone at the table, leaving not much to eat. So ridiculous, almost comical except that the meal was very expensive. The service was very slow, long wait to get the bill.
The Lodge provided a free breakfast in this dining area that was excellent. Dinner was very strange.

My husband and I ate at this restaurant while staying at the Yellowstone Valley Lodge, which itself rated 5 stars. However, this restaurant is not really enjoyable. The food, what there is of it, is very good. The menu consists of a bunch of small disconnected dishes which add up to a very expensive meal. The menu is more suited to people who want to spend 2 to 3 hours drinking wine and eating occasionally than to people who would like a normal dinner with protein and vegetables for a mid range price. I gave the restaurant 3 stars because the food that we did have was good, but the experience was really 1 star. We would stay at the lodge again, but we would not eat at this restaurant again.

Make sure to sit on the covered patio as the inside is bland. The restaurant sits above the Yellowstone River with the mountains as the backdrop. The food is creative although pricey due to the number of dishes you are likely to consume. Kind of a modified tapas style. Good wine and beer list. We had great service.

Upon arrival we were asked to wait, as we were 10 minutes early, puzzling as there were several empty tables. Not offered a place to wait we stood awkwardly until seated. Specials were offered without the prices which though common is still unacceptable. I ordered lamb, my friend duck breast. We assumed that when properly prepared these dishes should be rare, unless the customer specifically asks otherwise. Both the lamb and the duck were overcooked, the lamb to the point of inedible. When the waitress asked how our meal was we said that the meats were overcooked, she said she would tell the chef. However the next thing we were offered was the check. The final indignity was my friend being told her credit card was declined, she called the credit card company and was told no charges from this restaurant had been attempted.
I have run a food establishment and understand the challenges. The quality of the meal didn’t match the high price. Very disappointing.

We were staying at the Yellowstone Valley Lodge a few nights and decided to make reservations for the grill on our first night. So glad we did! It was one of the best meals I have ever had! 3 weeks since we have returned home and I am still thinking of that fantastic meal. I love restaurants that are true to farm to fork and this place is definitely authentic in that. Our server, Sage was also amazing and very personable. We enjoyed talking to her. The place is small so reservations recommended and the quality of the food is out of this world.

Walking up to the front of the Yellowstone Valley Grill we were pretty unimpressed but once walked around to the rear entrance we discovered we were right on the Yellowstone River... beautiful view. We were seated on the enclosed patio and really enjoyed it.
They were out of a few of the menu items but I guess that's what happens when you insist on quality.
Indian spiced pork chop was perfectly cooked and had great flavor. The smoked lamb ribs with pickled daikon radishes was was killer good. Nice wine list and moderately priced.
We were lucky enough to get a last minute reservation due to a cancelation, but recommend making a reservation several days in advance.
Enja very nice evening with good friends

The scenery is everything. As another reviewer said, they give speeches about how they are a sharing restaurant. And want you to order multiple dishes. I said we don’t want to share. Then the waitress comes over and says the same speech - we are a sharing restaurant. I said we don’t want to share. Portions are very very small. Food is mediocre. Service is terrible. My tiny piece of fish was cold. There were six in our party. One person asked for bread. I said yes I would like bread. She didn’t ask if anyone else would like bread. She comes back and says they are working on the bread. After the meal was over she brings two rolls on two plates. Only the two who asked for a roll got one. Again, the scenery is beautiful and worth it. The restaurant is one of the worst we’ve ever been to. Did I mention the bugs? Ants crawling all over our table. Multiple bugs flying around our table. The doors were open to the outside but still-ants on the table?!

EXCELLENT all around - food, service and location. We had the Carpaccio appetizer that was fresh and unique, my husband and son both got the short rib that was tender, flavorful and enough food for lunch the following day. The mushroom pasta and the burger were also excellent, and nothing could compare to cocktails around the fire pit listening to and viewing the Yellowstone River. Beautiful location!!

I swear it seems to me that we return to Montana so I can fly fish and because my wife wants to dine at the Yellowstone Valley Grill. And I don’t blame her. The service (Leigh, especially) is exceptional. They operate as a collective and all of them will take care of you as needed. The setting is beyond anything that any Michelin restaurant can deliver. It is insanely beautiful to dine al fresco on the banks of the Yellowstone River, at the foot of the Absaroka Mountains. The view changes with the light and is always different and spectacular.
But the food is what makes this place a destination restaurant. I mean, we love Chico Hot Springs, but one of the reasons is that it is so close to Yellowstone Valley Grill. The duck confit is superbly flavored. The tuna poke appetizer hits the spot. They do something to the pork chop that makes it exceptional. I don’t even know what “larb” is, but theirs is sublime. They have a great selection of wine, and you can always match it with any dish, including their savory lamb.
This really is one of America’s Great Restaurants. Forget Livingston. We have traveled the world, and almost all of the country. This restaurant is one of a kind. And the chef never rests on his laurels. We have spent a week dining here, each time we visit for a week, once every three years. So, we have seen how the already spectacular menu grows and changes and reflects what are apparently the travels of the chef.
I don’t care where you are in southwest Montana. Make the trip to Yellowstone Valley Grill.

Amazing food, amazing service, beautiful setting! Well worth the drive from Bozeman. We had the best crusted walleye, the most tender filets, and that huckleberry cheesecake…definitely a great end to a great meal

Yet another chef who comes into a great restaurant that has been around for years and changes everything! Hello! We are Montana and not California. None of the old favorites are to be found anyone on the menu. In their place are tapas style choices that are not even good. The salads....so far overdressed that you lose taste of any of the underlying ingredients. A $71 steak? Give me a break. Animal cheeks...I guess if you are into them, OK. A burger described with "American cheese"! Velveeta? Kraft singles? The former menu was so good and so down to earth. The wine prices are jacked up so much higher. And for dessert, gone is the famous huckleberry ice cream. In its place is a pasty sorbet of strawberries and almonds, among a few others. The scenery is gorgeous still; you can't ruin that. And to end on a positive note, the chicken dish was really the only good thing at our table. We were regulars and now we certainly will not return. Too bad.
