Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We enjoyed breakfast here so much we returned for dinner. Within our group we tried the French toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs, chicken fried steak and biscuits, and sausage. All were delicious. The coffee wasn’t the best, but overall we would definitely return. For dinner, my husband and I shared the Elk meatloaf-a huge portion! It was delicious with the homemade mashed potatoes. We also had a salad with the Huckleberry vinaigrette dressing which was so yummy. My grandson loved the Mac and cheese. The service was great, the decor was very well done, and the cleanliness appreciated.

Poutine for an appetizer, our youngest had the pot pie, two of us had the chicken fried steak, and I had the blackened salmon. Easily our best meal on our tour of Montana hot springs over spring break. Oh and the side salads were so good, just beautifully presented with a dusting of sunflower seeds. Clearly a quality dining experience. Plus local tap brews. Do not miss this saloon!

The Old Saloon is a good ol time! The entire atmosphere feels super authentic, reminiscent of the Wild West. There was a live musician playing acoustic covers in the bar while we waited for our table in the dining room. Very talented! If you are extremely COVID conscious, this probably isn’t the best choice for you right now. The staff and patrons were not wearing masks. It was like stepping back in time! Beer and food were great. Highly recommend the prime rib and vegetarian pot pie! Everything was super fresh and homemade. A must-do!

Rated my ribeye steak as ‘acceptable’ but I’m a hard critic! The steak was ordered medium-rare and cooked to perfection. However, I was hoping for that chargrilled taste marrying that steak cooked to perfection. Salad and loaded baked potato was good. Service was okay. Overall, a nice meal in Emmigrant, MT, to avoid crowded dining in Gardiner before entering Yellowstone’s north entrance.

Our table was almost entirely ignored; we didn’t even get water for at least fifteen minutes, after a larger group that was seated after us had already given their orders. The food was expensive and, genuinely, just slightly less good than something you could cook for dinner in your own kitchen. I am giving them two stars instead of one because we did eventually get food and it was technically edible.

For seven years, every fall, I've eaten multiple meals at the Old Saloon, it was always a solid choice in the area. This year during the Covid Pandemic we were ordering takeout meals only and eating at our cabin. We were greatly disappointed that on BOTH occasions to pickup our takeout, the second visit during prime Friday 7pm crowd, there was not a mask to be seen on the hostess, waitresses, or even when looking into the kitchen. They have a sign on there door saying masks are mandatory in Montana, apparently they need to read it again. This will be the last time we visit the old saloon, we prefer to spend our money at establishments that take the public's health more seriously.

We stopped her yesterday with high hopes for a nice birthday lunch for my husband, I wish we would have instead enjoyed the nice lodge we were at longer and at there. Not only were we not acknowledged by any of the three employees in the restaurant in the entire 10 minutes we were there, the server who was doing her very best to avoid looking up and acknowledging us walked around the corner and we could see her eating her food. Totally fine to take a break but it is a general rule of customer service to acknowledge a table, get them their drinks, and then maybe you can go back to eating your lunch. Not impressed and I am sure they were happy we walked out so they didn't have to exert any energy on serving us. Very disappointing.

visiting on a trip with my friends and we stopped in because this place had great reviews. not really sure where that came from though. 2 of our meals were awful and we sent them back, only to hear the cooks LOUDLY insulting us through the open window. our server was amazing and so sweet but she acted like this was a regular occurrence. Asked another table near us and they agreed about the food being horrible. Hope they can bring in some new cooks soon because this place is too cute to be ruined by these guys.

Wish I could give a better review but this plane was disappointing. We went in on Friday evening around 7. They were not swamped but 3/4 full. Waited awhile to see waitress for drink orders. When she did get to us she was very pleasant. We ordered and it took awhile to get food. When it did come out the waitress said the chef forgot to cook my wifes meal but they would hurry it out. My daughters fries were ice cold and soggy so we sent them back. They did bring my wife's meal and it was hot except for the cold mashed potatos which paired well with the shoe leather country fried steak. They were out of the fridge cold with hot but bland gravy dumped on them. Atmosphere was old west and cool. I would stop for a beer and skip the food. Oh yah watch your bill they tried to charge me for extra beers they never served me.

So happy we made a last minute stop here. The ambiance is great and seemed to be a nice mix of locals and tourists. Not many places have chicken and dumplings on the menu so that was a bonus. Beautiful bar and a great place to sit and visit!

Two different times I’ve ordered the Old Saloon burger which is Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, & an egg according to the menu but both times I just get a regular cheeseburger. They’re good but not what I wanted. Also the buns are not big enough or sturdy enough to contain the burger. I know it’s a Montana bar, but my husband would be happy to pay more for a decent non-alcoholic beer. You could have another choice besides Busch. Good service but waitress never asked about dessert after I even said it was a birthday dinner.

What a fun stop outside of Yellowstone! This place feels like I stepped into the Wild, Wild West. Super cool vibes and great service. Gena was a fantastic bartender and made our experience memorable, she was so friendly and super knowledgeable about the local area. Definitely stop by, but be aware that they don’t have food on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Old Saloon/Livery Stable restaurant ruined our special, anniversary evening on Feb 14. The unwritten menu specials were throw together, unplanned, and poorly executed. We avoided the “Main Course Specials” but believed they could at least pull off a seafood spring roll, which turned out to be a greasy, uncooked, explosion of carnage. The waitress was embarrassed to serve it. Who could mess up a chicken fried steak? Bingo! This steak or was it horse meat, looked like it was pulled out of a bag and tasted like cardboard. The mash potatoes were not creamy but chunky and bland. Maybe with a bit more training, the Cook could be called a Chef. Stick with the salad only. There’s one bag they may not mess up.

We didn't see anything beckoning us in Gardiner upon exiting Yellowstone as far as dinner, and I knew we wouldn't be passing much on our route back to Bozeman. So it was with joy as we drove through the dark and deserted Paradise Valley that we noted it was open. Not only open, but, probably due to its status as the only spot around, jumpin'. It's well over a hundred years old and while it gives off that vibe, the menu has definitely changed in a century. I didn't expect several of the menu items, which seemed like midtown Manhattan, not the middle of Montana. We stuck to what did seem cowboyesque - elk meatloaf (two giant slabs) and chicken fried steak. Homemade mashed potatoes, good gravies, decent soup (evidently broccoli and cheese soup is the state soup of Montana as it was the soup of choice in more than one joint, I noted). Hearty food and decent portions. Prices, well, typical of the area. Glad we stopped.
