Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Used to be a great place to visit but we stopped in for brunch on a Sunday and were very disappointed. With only 2 other small tables occupied, we waited 45 mins for Eggs Benedict - which was really average. Coffees were just OK. Will find an alternative stop next time.

Every time we travel between Queenstown and Te Anau, we stop at Five Rivers cafe. Sometimes it's merely for a coffee. This time, however, we had not had breakfast before our flight from Auckland to Queenstown, so we decided to have lunch at Five Rivers. Stepping inside from the freezing temperatures, the heat inside was welcoming. So, too, was the friendliness of the lady who took our orders. A group of people entered just before us, so there were a lot of orders to be taken. This also caused a long waiting time for our food, which didn't bother us on the day because we had lots of time. When the food eventually arrived, it turned out to be well worth the wait. My wife had pasta while I had a burger. We both enjoyed our meals. But mine was just too much food and I couldn't finish it all. They will definitely see us again on our next trip down south.

We called in for a snack on our way to Te Anau. The place was busy and we were advised that meals could take some time so we ordered simple meals. I ordered a Mexican Pie and my wife a Salmon Fritada. I ordered a kettle and my wife had a tea. Service was friendly and our food came out quite quickly.

This has been a local stop on the way to Invercargill from Queenstown for a number of years, enjoyable for its cheerful staff and good healthy food. Sadly all the cheerful staff have left and the food is very ordinary. We will miss this stop going forward. Friends and family who have stopped by lately have found the same thing. It is sad as it is well located and used to have great food and service but now relies on unknowing tourists to drop in. I would suggest the current owners sell it or learn how to train staff in customer service and providing healthy food. They have no idea. I would suggest tourists keep driving to Gaston or Lumsden.

We stopped by this cafe to order some takeaway coffee and food as it was recommended by a friend who was a local. I walked in sipping a cup of tea that was given to me by my friend in a takeaway cup and was immediately confronted by an older woman, who barked out "Is that for rubbish?" I applaud her in being able to place an inordinate amount of judgement in her voice and it was not lost on me what she meant. I chose to ignore the less than cordial greeting and calmly and immediately replied to her, saying "No, I'm drinking it." I then proceeded to order some caffeinated beverages and their fish chowder to go. We were sharing the chowder with others as we weren't really that hungry. When my wife requested some extra spoons to take away for sharing, the other, younger staff members again impressed us with both their body language and tone of voice by mockingly asking "Well, how many do you want?" The behavior was so effortless that I suspect they must have special training for the staff to behave this way. I also observed they had a completely different demeanor when interacting with some lighter skinned customers. No accusations or judgement here, simply observation. Perhaps they were old friends... Unfortunate for my friend, as they looked a bit bad recommending this place, but perhaps they were mainly recommending it for convenience. Oh, the cappuccinos were pretty decent and so was the chowder, although we think they microwaved it. As for the side of contempt, we would probably pass on that...

As soon as we walked in we got a really grumpy look from the lady on the till which made us feel like we should turn around and walk straight out. Despite this and surprisingly, the food was really good. The young lady that brought our food out was super pleasant, probably trying to make up for the really bad vibes of the white haired hag on the till. I would drive straight past this place, unless u want to try the great food and are happy to put up with the ladies terrible manner.

Ordered a Mochaccino but what arrived was hot chocolate so didn't say anything. Ordered GF eggs Benedict with smoked salmon w scrambled eggs instead but what arrived was fried egg? I repeat myself twice through ordering and confirmed by the server and what came through was wrong! Server was kind of arguing with me and educating me? All I got is sigh and no apology. Really??

Last Friday we called in on our way to Queenstown for a drink and a snack. I was the only one at the counter, but had to wait for some minutes for the lady behind the counter to finish her sweeping before she finally acknowledged my presence and took our orders. A tea and a coffee was served. The tea coming out of the pot was very weak and refused to develop any colour. When the small order of food was served by a man I commented to him that the water did not seem to be very hot. His response was to lower his body and put his face nearer mine and in a mildly aggressive way ask me how much milk I had put in the cup. I was a little stunned by this reaction. He then asked me if I would like him to do something about it. I replied yes and he took the pot away muttering that the temperature would be what it is in the cylinder meaning that I would get the same as what I had got in the first place. Not a good look Five Rivers Cafe!!!! To shift the blame on to the customer instead of trying to cheerfully resolve the matter is not how you should treat customers if you want your food business to be successful. We have stopped by here many times ever since the cafe started. I am 72 years and I do know the right proportions of milk to water needed to make a good cup of tea. As a result of this experience we will most likely travel a bit further along the road to the Bomb at Gartson for a tea and coffee where you are treated cheerfully and made to feel valued and can have a few laughs

We stopped on the way through from Queenstown to Te Anau. Someone advised us that the milkshakes were great, although it had been many years since they had been. Unfortunately we found that not to be the case. They used trim milk, which should be a massive no-go without being asked by the customer. When I have a milkshake, I'm not going for healthy, I'm going for full creamy flavour. They also used thickener, which went a bit clumpy and we got chunks through the straw. Altogether, not a nice milkshake and I won't be stopping by again. Which is a shame, as the place itself looked nice and perhaps the other food may be good.

Great coffee in the middle of nowhere - almost. However the food is distinctly average. I ordered vegetable soup which was a small bowl (for the price) of pumpkin soup! It was possibly the most ordinary pumpkin soup I have ever had. My husband ordered the BLT. The bread was curled at the edges without any appearance of being toasted. We were really unimpressed. For travellers looking for a meal - stop for the coffee but keep going!

This is not what it use to be and I am saddened to see such a lovely Cafe struggling with Staffing issues and a sign warning customers of this. We were here last year and it was amazing sadly not so now the Chowder my wifes must have let her down on size and flavour. The only good thing is the Coffee. The website and actual prices are not the same. We had Chowder and Blue Cod which was overcooked and certainly had a blood vain so not sure what fish it was. My only hope when we come back next time the quality has restored to what it use to be. That's if we come back. We wanted a coffee on the way back from Milford only to find it shut at 2pm. This is again not what the Website says!

This was a great little pit stop for brunch. They are understaffed but warn you and ask you to be understanding. The hot chocolate and coffee were fab and the food was tasty and well priced. The staff were friendly and the place had a good vibe.

Five Rivers Cafe is perfectly located about midway along the highway between Te Anau and Queenstown, making it ideal for a coffee break. We first stoped here a decade agin, and found little had changed - despite some posters here unhappy with the new owners. We had a proper cup of tea in a pot, a nice coffee and some decent slices, while checking out the artworks and tourist literature.

We were driving to Te Anau, and came across this cafe. Had excellent food- highly recommend the date and honey loaf (out of this world), salmon bagel and carrot cake. Good coffee too. We were also surprised to find farm animals out the back. There was lovely horse who loved a good scratch. Clean toilet facilities, parking and friendly staff. Highly recommend and will here on our way back.
