We passed through around 9.30am on a Sunday, was great to be able to grab a couple of coffees and carry on our way. I regularly have cafe coffee and this one was good!

While the food was more than ample though we found it was rather expensive for what was basically pub food. The blue cod we had was fresh and well cooked. Wasn't fussed on the salad.

We sat on the side of the road wondering if we stop here or go to the next town for dinner......a good choice to stop. Two good meals ......nothing exceptional but great friendly service and clean, efficient and the meals were very generous in size. Blue cod was tasty and steak cooked perfectly Would recommend a stop

We had been on a day trip from Dunedin to Alexandra to a relative's funeral and were driving back to the city late evening. There had been a slight discussion about whether we would have takeaways when we got back or whatever without anything definite being decided. As we entered Lawrence we considered stopping for a brief stop and a... More

Yummy white bait and cod, chips and salad accompanied by a couple of glasses of wine from the bar list. Served by friendly attentive staff.

After driving for several hours, we stopped off here for a nice, strong, hot pot of tea. Exactly what we got. Warmed cups too even! And very reasonably priced. Did not eat, but the menu read great for breakfast/brunch and was very reasonably priced compared to prices elsewhere. Meals we did see leaving the kitchen looked like generous portions. The... Here for lunch break and a half way point on our journey. In an old bank building. The soup of the day was all sold out so had the seafood soup. Quite thick and plenty of seafood with reasonable flavor. My wife had a salad and was more than happy. The take away coffee was fine.

Description
Winners of the Southern Region Rural Cafe of The Year 2017 Welcoming, friendly cafe within a historical building, it was built in 1886, and was the first Rural Bank Of New Zealand. It still has the original vault, lots of history. Owner operated By Reuben and Shelley Hinton, Reuben was a Lone Star head chef for over 10 years, and has been cheffing for 27 years. Shelley has been trained by Reuben, and our customers cannot tell who is out in the kitchen cooking, as our meals are always consistent.
