This was one of the best restaurants I've been to when taking in all the criteria of Food, Service, Ambience, View, and Price. Who knew Lutsen would hold such a gem! Every element of the meal from the apps to the bread and oil, entree, and dessert were of the highest degree. Came back the next day because I couldn't get my mind off the North Shore Salad. How often can one say that?! This is by no means a cheap date, but very reasonable considering the extraordinary quality. Pair this with a lodge type decor with a 5* view of Lake Superior steps from the huge windows, and this is an absolute MUST stop if you're anywhere close.

The Strand Waterfront Dining is wildly overpriced, with average food but good service given the inadequate staffing. I had the $38 chicken and waffles for dinner and the chicken was tough, just like McDonalds. I had the same meal a week ago in Dubuque, Iowa, for $14. Won’t go back.

Everything was excellent! Our waiter Rob was very knowledgeable and suggested items if you were unsure of your choice . hard to choose so many delicious choices. Our table had the tomahawk ribeye and the venison both were outstanding paired with just the right wine thanks to Mark. View topped off our wonderful evening! if you are looking for upscale dining with fabulous wine selection the Strand is a must stop!

Ordered Lake Superior Caesar salad romaine was more like a chunk of iceberg the trout was tiny and dried out. Venison carpaccio was 4 paper thin pieces that you could see thru if held up $20 for pathetic plate of nothing. A person could starve here.

Hello JanM625, It would appear that our dining experience may not be for you; and that's ok; however I'm saddened to see that you would review us negatively based on perhaps a lack of understanding to the nature of the fine dining cuisine we offer. Both dishes you mentioned are from our 1st course offerings, they are not intended to be the entire meal and are further complimented by additional dishes. I also would encourage your to learn more about Carpaccio in hopes of a better appreciation of the technique.

The Strand (oddly named for the North Shore, but whatever...) is the main dining room at the waterfront Lutsen Lodge. We were staying in the area and heard this was good, thought we’d check it out. The Lodge itself is an old fashioned ski lodge, reminded me of Lake Tahoe, Sun Valley. It’s been around a long time, has new owners. Other reviews of the Strand were mixed, but we had an excellent meal here. We had a lovely lakefront table, overlooking the beach and a covered bridge that leads to a lakeshore path (which we walked before dinner, its terrific). Service was great; you can dress up or wear what you were hiking in, doesn’t matter here. We had salads, ribeye steak, and a halibut special, all quite good. They have an extensive wine list and an impressive wine display/cellar. It’s pricey, but that’s what you get at resorts like this. I’d recommend it for any special occasion.

The Strand has a great atmosphere and wonderful view of the lake, but our breakfast here was just ok, which was a bummer. The food itself was alright, but the service we received was really what turned us off. It was mid morning, one other couple was in the restaurant and we waited nearly 10 minutes for waitstaff to notice us and seat us. (There were no workers in the dining area of the restaurant that entire time.) Our waitress was nice, but seemed very disinterested in what she was doing. If there had been more breakfast options in the area, we would have left before being seated.

We had not been to dinner at Lutsen Lodge for several years. After seeing the updated but stuffy dining room and the menu we needed some time to decide to stay. We ordered Cocktails which were very good. Slowly we tried to decide what on the menu we could could consider. It is limited in the number of items and it is ridiculously high priced. If you are comfortable with an entree costing $38-$95 this may be a good place for you. However, the food itself is nearly all very heavy and stuffy again like the decor. We ordered the meat ball starter which was about as you would expect. Nothing notable about it. We also ordered a starter that was described as a mushroom brulee. It actually had custard as a descriptive word on the menu. It was basically mushrooms in gravy with melted cheese on top. This was a true disappointment. Foolishly we continued and ordered three entrees. We had the Short Rib plate, a Mushroom Wellington and the Chicken and Waffles. As many people have said in other reviews the chicken and waffles could feed at least three people. Deep fried chicken breast on a rather heavy bland waffle at $38. I believe this is the least expensive entree. It comes with sauces that were not easy to describe. The Wellington at $45 was under baked making the pastry heavy again and the mushroom filling was so so. It is supposed to be a puff pastry, light not heavy and soggy. The Short Rib was the best of the bunch but nothing outstanding at $78. It was a bit like a good old fashioned well done pot roast. At the prices they are charging one would expect to be dazzled. We have eaten around the world and are aware of good and interesting food because we have experienced in the past. Unfortunately, tonights experience was a disappointment. For our money we would suggest the New Scenic Cafe for more interesting and well prepared food.

What a delight ! 5 star dining on the north shore ! Surrounded by $12 hamburgers restaurants the strand has brought fine dining to the area Beautiful setting with over the top great food Be warned it’s pricey BUT worth ever penny The short rib dinner the best I’ve ever had at any 5 star restaurant And the selection rivals any restaurant anywhere with many noteworthy selections Rod our service manager was also fantastic at explaining the many options CANT believe such a fine dining restaurant could exist on the north shore We will travel back just to experience this gem

Staying at the resort, we dined at this restaurant several times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They do keep the menu limited so they can focus on doing things right. The breakfast and lunches were delicious. Dinner-night one, I tried the sturgeon as it was raved about. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. The fish itself was "OK" but the sides left a lot to be desired. The following night, I was not terribly hungry-ordered the Swedish meatballs on the appetizer menu and they fixed it with a little side of vegetables to make it more of a "meal" they were delicious!

My wife and I had dinner at The Strand a few weeks ago and had a great time. The waitstaff are very pleasant and you can't beat the location. We had reservations at I believe 5pm and they had just opened so we were the only ones there for a good thirty minutes then some other couples were coming in for dinner as well. We started out with a charcuterie board and some Swedish Meatballs, both were tasty but nothing really out of the ordinary. We decided to split a Caesar Salad and the Smoked Goose Chowder. The salad was okay but the chowder was fantastic. It had a little bit of heat to it and just great flavors. My wife decided to have the chicken and waffles as her main entree and I opted for the Pheasant. The chicken and waffles could have fed two or three people...LOL, there was a lot of it. My pheasant was pretty tough so I probably wouldn't get that again. But overall it was a very enjoyable dinner and right on the water, can't beat it.

Food quality exceeded our expectation. Our server, Paul, was very friendly and accommodating. Ordered the porterhouse steak, coho salmon, pork chop, and smoked goose chowder. All five star eats. It took about an hour for them to get it done so our waiter kindly offered free desserts of our choice. We had the six layer chocolate cake, maple creme brulee, and salted carmel cheesecake, all fabulous and well done. I didn't enjoy the locally crafted IPA beer which came off fruity so I asked our waiter to replace it and he did so without charging extra.

My wife and i visited The Strand Waterfront in November of 2020 - we'll be back there for Valentine's night 2021. We have been coming here for years for our anniversary which is actually in October. We had not been there in a couple of years and were pleasantly surprised by the dining room upgrades, the really nice wine cellar, and sommelier curated selection. Our dining selection was perfectly prepared and unique, offering both local or "northern" fare and classic dishes. As two people who have dined at Michelin star establishments and traveled extensively, we were happy with the efforts to bring this restaurant to the next level on the north shore of Minnesota. Well done.

I love checking reviews, but you can’t always go by them, right? I was pleasantly surprised when we took friends to Lutsen Resort’s Strand restaurant the other evening. I was prepared for expensive meals- that is the norm nowadays. I expected great service- that didn’t disappoint ( thank you Rob). But from reading some reviews I wasn’t sure if the food would be “worth” the prices. Well, everyone was very pleased with their meals I am happy to report. The chicken and waffles were a hit. And hubby, who has sampled many pork chops in many restaurants, claimed this may have been the very best he’s ever had. Kudos to the nicest fine dining restaurant in the Arrowhead!

So disappointed. Husband and I were looking forward to a wonderful breakfast like many others we’ve had there in years past (but had not been there for 3-4 yrs). Were surprised to see nice renovation of restaurant, but sad also as the old (but nice) restaurant was such a north shore institution. Was also surprised to see NO ONE in the restaurant, but us. Once we opened the menu, we knew why. The old, perfectly fine and delicious, reasonably priced menu is GONE. In its place is a menu with eclectic and “fancy” items (as my husband called it), with ridiculously expensive prices. We ordered most standard thing we could find (other than $18 pancakes). Plate of eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast for $21 per person??? Don’t know what the coffee cost because we never received an itemized receipt, but we figured $5 each maybe. Our usual standard breakfast that might have been $30 in the old days was $56 (before tip) now. And the food was nothing special. Needless (and sad) to say, we will not be back. Lutsen Lodge, please wake up! Most people “up north” are looking for more standard breakfast fare for reasonable prices. Good luck. Hope your new restaurant fares well, but I’m afraid for you.

Beautiful room, very good food, spectacular views of Lake Superior - and be prepared for high prices. We came here for lunch on a weekday - arrived at 1:30, understood that dining ended at 2 but we were treated warmly and felt no pressure to rush (we finished about 2:15) One of us had an omlette, the other had the buffalo meatloaf. Also had a piece of chocolate cake (very large, very good). As others have mentioned, this is an expensive place to eat. But if you can afford the cost, it's a lovely place to eat.
