We have enjoyed lunch here a half dozen times and love the place. Having lived in Japan for two years when I was in the service, we find it almost emotional to find a place close to home that reminds us so much of the times we dined out in the Japan of our youth. The decor is quite beautiful, a delightfully modern take on the Japan of old, and the service is understatedly attentive, and very pleasant. Most recently, we enjoyed the yellowtail sashimi appetizer, followed by two eel entrees, the unagi don and the unagi/avocado sushi roll. The last two are pictured here, and they were as delicious as they were beautifully presented. If you like Japanese delicacies prepared authentically, this place is for you.

I arrived in town late on a Sunday, which happens to be the day most restaurants in town closed early. Umi was the last place I called and I was their last customer at 9:30. They were nice, helpful and made me a fantastic teriyaki salmon dinner. I was looking for something other than pizza and I found perfection. It was delicious and I woke up the next morning feeling great!

The sushi looks great, but my favorite here in the unaju don, a less well known Japanese treat, when it’s prepared well, which it always is at Umi! The fresh water eel over wonderfully flavored sticky rice is an authentic replication of what is so popular with discerning gourmands back in Japan. It comes accompanied by a delightful salad that is also typically Japanese, and a small bowl of soup that reminded me of evenings in a small restaurant in a town in rural Japan. There is no attempt here at “fusion” cuisine. It’s real Japanese, and gloriously so.

Their Japanese cuisine is competent and in some cases quite good. But based on our experience, stay away from their attempts at Chinese menu items. We ordered lo mein, which was uninspired and tasteless. We ordered a shrimp dish which was overcooked, dry, and unmemorable. Even the white rice was gummy and unpleasant. Avoid their Chinese stuff.

I really don't like cucumber, so I automatically rule out any roll that includes it. Several of Umi's rolls mention that they include cucumber, so I passed those by in search of appealing ones that didn't have it. I ordered a Philly Roll that was advertised as salmon and cream cheese . . . and then got home only to find that it contained cucumber. I will have to make a point to ask for no cucumbers in the "special instructions" if I order from there again. Otherwise, the Fuji Maki was tasty but the cucumber ruined the Philly Roll for me.

Came here for lunch because we love Japanese food and it's located near a major health facility we visited. We were not impressed with any of the food. The miso soup was tepid and so bland that I needed to add soy sauce. An order of steamed shumai was barely Luke warm and pasty. My poke bowl was ok but also lacked flavor. Worst was my wife's chirashi, her favorite Japanese food. The pieces of fish were cut too thick and unevenly. The best thing on the plate was the sushi rice and some Japanese pickles.

Delicious and wide variety of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. We ordered avocado ball appetizer which I am used to being a tartare. It was not but very good. It was cooked inside with bits of mango. We also ordered 4 maki rolls, and salmon fried rice which had bits of roe and pineapple. Very good! Prices a little high but food was worth it. Very clean!

I have only been here once and ordered the Chicken Kung Pao lunch dish. I have eaten this dish many times and in many restaurants and this was the worst I have ever had. Very gloppy sauce and small pieces of very chewy chicken. I left 3/4 of the dish on my plate, paid my bill and left. I wont be back!!

This place is a hidden treasure. We shared the wings as an appetizer-so crunchy. The garlic/ginger bed it was covered in was so yummy. Their Godzilla maki looks like a dragon, the eel is a taste sensation. My main course was seafood udon. So many different kinds of seafood. I could live on it.
The interior is so tasteful. I want my house designed in this style and colors.
Frankie, one of the owners, is so funny and pleasant. Highly recommended.

A hidden gem in Waltham on Winter St at the 128 exit. Very friendly and attentive staff. Everything is delicious, fresh tasting and quickly prepared. My 3rd time back and will continue to eat there while I'm in the area.

Took out Chineese food. Worst tasting Chineese food I've ever had and I've had lots. Ended up in my trash can. Don't like to leave negative reviews, but stay away from their Chineese food. Don't know about Japanese or Korean.

The service was excellent, the food was great, and there's an owner who's there all the time, making sure that things are exactly as they should be. It's cozy, convenient to major roads, and we were extremely pleased.

Wenny was a kind, capable and helpful server. She described the various dishes since we did not know Japanese cuisine , I am very pleased that I took her suggestion ( a special type of sushi !) It was delicious! My brother loved the bowl he ordered, and the tempura was lovely. I highly recommend this restaurant . The friendliness and delicious food made this restaurant a highlight of our day.

Solid place for Japanese food. I just did not expect it to be off of an interchange. It’s very convenient to all the hotels in the area. Just don’t expect a memorable ambience.
