We came here for dinner earlier in the week and had a great time. Our server Kristen, was really great and if this review were only for her, she'd get 5 stars! We sat down and Kristen greeted us with warmth and a very friendly personality. We ordered cocktails, the Black 'n Blue martini and the El Barrio, both of which were delicious. For apps we got the zucchini chips and the crispy eggplant. Both were good, but here's where the details start to wander off a bit... the zucchini chips were really good, but SO salty, and oddly the sauce that came with it was very bland. Now, together they were fine, and maybe that's the idea? But for me I'd rather have 2 things that are seasoned well on their own that also go well together. The crispy eggplant had great flavor, but they were definitely not cooked enough. They were quite hard and chewy, so I found myself mostly just eating the accompaniments, (the harissa tomato sauce, arugula and smoked yogurt) all of which were great. For entrees, we each had a nice glass of wine, but we both wished there was more selection in that category. For food we had the short ribs and the salmon. My wife's ribs were cooked perfectly, but again the seasoning was a bit off. She felt like it just needed a little salt and pepper. My salmon was also cooked perfectly, with a really nice, crispy sear, but again, here comes that seasoning theme... the fish itself was over salted, but the potato that came with it was lacking salt. It also came with green beans which were really fresh and added a great crunch to the dish. Now, any criticism I give is all to be taken with a grain of salt (haha, see what I did there?)... the food was great and I will go back, it's just that for the price, (and for a 5 start review), I need the seasoning to be on point! One other thing that REALLY irked me, (and maybe this is something that only bothers me in particular after working 15+ years in the restaurant business myself), is that our entrees arrived before we were done with our apps! UGH! I hate that, especially when you're paying close to fine dining prices. Now, I don't know if this was a mistake or if this is their normal practice, but listen up, GHG, if that's the norm, FIX IT! No one likes being rushed, and most of us like to have at least a few minutes to digest and savor what we just ate before we like to move on to the next thing. All in all, we had a very nice meal and will definitely go back.

Haven't been here in over 2 years, but came for a nice dinner sitting outside on a beautiful night with a full moon. The grassy fields in the background dotted with 200+ year old oak trees is story tale picturesque. Our server was Lisa and she was very attentive and knew the menu quite well. A+ for service. We ordered a bottle of Merlot which came with their delicious corn bread appetizer with fancy butter. For dinner we had the 6oz Filet Mignon ($33) with Blue Cheese Butter ($2) and the New York Sirloin ($37) with Hot Pepper Butter ($2), both served with a side Caesar salad. The steaks were incredible, and the pepper butter was amazing - so splurge for the specialty butters if your budget allows for it. For dessert we shared the Fruit Crisp ($9) served a la mode to cap off the dinner. BY THE WAY, the name for this place is not (I don't believe) based on the actual name of a gibbet, which would be a crude name for remembering a restaurant. While a gibbet is really a hangman's contraption, and on a hill is likely where they would be located, there is no evidence they are celebrating the hanging of people from yesteryear (though looking out at those oaks it can remind you of a western film where such things did happen). Go explore for yourself, read the history on the back of the menu, and ask your server for the back story! Every time we come to Gibbet Hill we are never disappointed. It's the kind of place we reserve for special occasions, though their takeout service and abundance of guests suggest this place may be a staple for the local clientele.

There were 6 (3 couples) of us and that's pretty hard to please. Everyone just loved their meals. Our waitress was a doll and attentive. We were lucky enough to get the "Silo Room". We all agreed the restaurant was very uniquely decorated but at the same time extremely loud. Having the off the side Silo Room made our time there much more enjoyable so we could talk. We enjoyed everything from, wine, drinks, appetizers, entrees to desserts and coffee. Our steaks were all prepared exactly how we asked, which worried a few of us. Sides were delicious with the exception of the cabbage. That seemed to be unanimously unfavorable. We left stuffed and with leftovers. This is certainly a special occasion restaurant or somewhere you must try at least once!

My wife and I tried their "curb side" service for my wife's birthday. For 15 years we have gone there for her birthday, it's the ONLY place that she will order beef. We called in our order and got a very specific pickup time. We were told to park at the curb and tell the person who I was and that I was there for a pickup. We arrived 5 minutes early in hopes that it could be ready and wouldn't get cold. Without checking, she said that I was 5 minutes early and it wasn't ready. I told her that I was parked at the curb and asked if she was going to bring the order to me when it was ready. She told me to park at a designated "curbside" parking area and she would bring it to me. About 15 minutes later I check and she went inside and picked up my food. I asked how long it had been sitting there, and she said only a couple of minutes. I asked why she hadn't brought it to me. While I was waiting in my designated parking spot, I watched her the entire time hoping that my order would be brought out. At no time did she ever go inside to check on anything, just talked to her friend outside. Needless to say, the food was cold by the time I got home, about 7 minutes away. The food was simply thrown into their standard cardboard to-go boxes with no effort to keep anything warm, no foil, no styrofoam boxes. A $106 meal had to be reheated in the microwave. Not so nice a birthday. We had visited at least once a month for more than 15 years! No more until this Covid is over and we can safely eat inside.

We've come here regularly over the years and always have an excellent experience. Our outside dining this past weekend left a lot to be desired. By the setup of outdoor dining it's obvious that GHG does not seem to value outside patrons. Outside dining is in a tent, on uneven grass and dirt. If it has rained your feet will be in mud or wet grass. Why not have a cheap raised wooden platform? We were told rain does not affect reservations. They serve there rain or shine. When it's sunny, someone at every table has the sun in their face. I did. They didn't even consider hanging a strip from the edge of the tent roof to take care of that issue as i've seen on other tents....Aside from that our server was excellent and she explained something to us that made sense as to why a limited menu. COVID restrictions affect how many can work in the kitchen and those workers still have to be 6 feet apart. Still, it would have been nice to have a baked potato, one of the reasons we always come here. Putting potatoes in an oven seems like something anyone working could do. Our food was excellent as usual. Until we feel comfortable dining inside again we won't be back.

When a friend of mine, a Massachusetts resident, heard I was being sent to MA on business he said Gibbet Hill Grill absolutely should NOT be missed even though an hour away. I made a reservation and looked forward to the dinner as the highlight of the trip. First the good. The restaurant and grounds are beautiful and the sunset was stellar. All of the employees were friendly and efficient. Now for the numerous issues. My dining partner got the hangar steak, medium rare, with caesar salad and macaroni and cheese. I got the sirloin tips, medium rare, with truffle butter, roasted radishes and mushrooms. Everything lacked seasoning. I am not someone to salt everything at a restaurant but I had to add salt to everything and pepper to most items. The hangar steak was cooked RARE and, while medium rare on the inside, half of the sirloin tips were burned outside. The sirloin tips were so tough that I had to swallow them in large chunks because I simply could not chew them all the way. My jaw muscles will be sore for days. The lack of flavor and poor quality of the meat would have made the sirloin inedible if I had not added the truffle butter. The radishes and mushrooms both lacked seasoning and the mushrooms were overcooked and rubbery. The macaroni and cheese was creamy but tasteless. The best part of the meal was the sourdough croutons on the salad. Despite the poor food I would have left considering it an okay experience except for one thing. We were seated down a level, next to the windows immediately beside a corner table with three female customers that appeared to be on their way out. Their packaged leftovers were perched on the table and their opened bottle of wine had been sealed in a clear bag for transport. The younger woman was obviously intoxicated. She did not know how to use an "inside voice." She shouted, yelled, and laughed uproariously though our entire meal. We heard her entire life story about her dad and current boyfriend. There was no way to even have a conversation at our table. She finished her current glass of wine so they unsealed the bottle of wine and poured it in her glass. She finished that glass and guzzled her friend's (step mom's?) glass as well. An hour and a half for our dinner and we did not get to have any conversation. It was like being at a frat party. Gibbet Hill staff should NEVER have allowed that experience for their other patrons! Nobody makes a reservation or pays Gibbet Hill Grill prices to endure obnoxious, inconsiderate, drunken dinner company. We had been greatly anticipating lingering over dessert and drinks but we got out as quickly as we could as it was obvious that, although they had already been there for 3.5 hour, they weren't planning to leave until closing.

We made reservations weeks beforehand, got several e-mail and text reminders about our upcoming visit, read great reviews, and expected this to be the best meal of our vacation. It wasn't. My 10-ounce Filet (and my daughter's) were both ordered medium, and were brought out way over-cooked, and also somewhat burned on the outside. For $44, I expected much better. Oddly, my wife's much cheaper Hangar steak was the best of them. Worse though, our server charged us for someone else's dinner! Our bill was $65 more than it should have been. She ran my credit card for some other table. Had I signed the receipt and not noticed, that would've been bad. When I brought it to her attention, her response was to act as though it was no big deal. The restaurant was jam packed on a Wednesday night, and I'm sure the stress level was high, but I expected more. Where the place did deliver was atmosphere and setting. It's in a really cool place, and certainly a unique dining experience. Credit them for really good desserts too, and my wife did like her steak. For the price, I found it a let down, but maybe my expectations were too high. Though frankly, I've had way better steaks (cooked properly) at Longhorn and Texas Roadhouse.

We ate here for our anniversary. We wanted to make sure that the restaurant was COVID compliant (it was): masks must be worn except when eating and drinking, tables socially distanced with plexiglass shields between them, servers wearing masks throughout. We were also told of a 90-minute dining limit, so we were prepared. This was a very good dining experience. We started off with the Caesar salad (which did not seem to have enough anchovies, but was otherwise dressed well). Then we had the Bone-in Steak and the SteakFrites. The Bone-in steak was prepared well, the Steak Frites was delicious, albeit a bit cool. The steak was dressed with bone marrow butter, which brought the dish to the next level. The fries, served in truffle oil, were crispy and salty; in other words perfect! Dessert was the Carrot Cake which was also very good. Drinks were inexpensive. Out waitperson could not have been nicer; she made sure we fit into the 90 minute timeframe without being rushed. A solid dining experience that does not break the bank.

Ate at the grill prior to the trail. We were sat in the silo by ourselves and served scrumptious food from their farms and barns. This is my second time here in a year and I am amazed at the service and the food. Wholesome goodness you can feel good about. We purchased a harvest bag chock full of vegetables from the garden and what a delight!! We then visited the trail via the road access to see the castle ruins. Amazing views and history right at your feet. Excellent place to visit or eat.

We booked at table a month in advance for Valentine's weekend but when we showed up, it was a zoo! There were no spaces at the bar, people were standing pretty much out the door. Given that they knew it was going to be crazy, they should have had people only with reservations and NO walk-ins. Nonetheless, we had a drink at the bar (standing) which was not the best start to our date. When we got seated, the waiter was running crazy with many other tables. We ordered the crab dip, which surprisingly came moderately warm. The center of the dip was still cold! The main course was also mediocre - charred hanger steak when I ordered it medium. The pasta with bolognese sauce was hearty. The saving grace was dessert - Sweets for Two! Overall, not the best of values for time and money.

Took my brother to Gibbet for his birthday, His food was cold fries were cold. My dinner was cold. Server did not come back to check on us. Will not take any family members to this restaurant again. Past was very good. Bread was served in the past but now corn bread cold. Dessert cake was ok, frosting was too cold so was not creamy. All and all very poor dinner. Will not return.

We've been going to Gibbet Hill ever since it opened. We always enjoyed the high quality steaks that they serve. I remember when we came back from two years of living in the deserts of Dubai, we were mesmerized by the views of grass as far as the eye could see! We recently returned to Gibbet Hill and were happy to find that the overall dining experience was as good as we remembered. My only problem was that I ordered too much and then was too full to finish my steak! The Farmhouse Grilled Cheeses were very tasty but filling. Caesar salad was classic and fantastic. The steaks are perfectly cooked and well appointed with various options of sauces and toppings. Service was excellent too. Can't wait to return whenever we go back home to Massachusetts.

While visiting friends from the area, we wound up here on separate occasions in November, December and January. All three times the food and service was excellent!! The venue is wonderful, too. We were there with small and large groups, and they had no problem accommodating us. Reservation must be made weeks in advance. Walk-ins are allowed; however, there will be a long wait - best bet is to eat at the bar. As noted by others, it can be a bit noisy throughout the restaurant and bar.

This was our first visit, but were accompanied by three others who were well acquainted with the restaurant. I'd viewed the menu in advance and was looking forward to trying the salmon. We sat outside in the tent; fortunately it was a delightful afternoon and not hot. Originally I could hear the others from across the table, but as more diners arrived, I could hardly hear at all—I missed a lot of the conversation, as did my wife. Nick, our waiter, was very accommodating and friendly. But when he told us the truck hadn't arrived with salmon, that bummed me out. I'm a seafood person when we go out, as I can grill meats any day (including perfect 1/3 lb. burgers. Plus we make a great brandy, butter, and blue cheese topping for filets, so don't need to pay restaurant prices for beef. We waited and waited for our dinners, then waited some more. When the plates finally arrived, the helpers had no clue as to who ordered what. Somehow they should have had a clue. That, plus they neglected to bring my wife's blue cheese/butter topping for her filet, so I had to get up and hail someone in the kitchen to make it right. At Nick's suggestion, I ordered the cod in the chowder. Unfortunately, it had little flavor. Instead, I felt uncomfortably bloated afterward (I had put one small pierce of the cornbread prior to that). I'm a sucker for asparagus, so also had that after Nick made it sound as if it was a great "special" that night. It was slightly undercooked, all too stalky, and also lacked any flavor. Hasn't the chef heard of seasoning? All in all, ours was an exceptionally priced dinner for wholly unexceptional food. I needn't return, as Groton has other restaurants that look intriguing.

We went here on recomendations from serveral for our anniversary dinner. When I made the reservation it asked if it was for a special occasion althought I dont know why because the only one who acknowledged it was the girl at the desk when we checked in. we were seated at the back of the restaurant between two table with kids. I love kids but one table had 2 and the other table had 4 kids that were runnign in and out of a exit door and letting the cold air in and being very noisy. So much for a relaxing dinner with conversation. The waitress brought our drinks but then didnt come back for 15 minutes to take our order. After about 35 minutes the food came out. My steak which I asked for med well was completely black on the outside. The inside was well done so I ate it, good thin because she didnt come back to check until we were almost done. We finished eating and waited 20 minutes with dirty plates in fron of us until a different waitress came over and cleared them. Our waitress seemed to care about her tables with more than 2 people. We were planning on coffee and dessert but after all the waiting for her to remember we were there we opted to leave. We will not go back again, I've gottn much better service at much less pricey restaurants.
