Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stopped by Curly Tree on our way to Franz Josef from Wanaka. The whitebait omelette was tasty but a bit pricey. We also spoke to the friendly owner who shared about whitebait catching and the best months for it. A cosy little place to...stop by for some fresh whitebait if you're passing by this area. Don't miss the sign by the road!More

They have sold their business and were told today is their last day. Tasted good. Daughter had 1.5 pcs of it. But a bit pricey for the small portion. Maybe it's expensive fish?

Whitebait patties are a local delicacy. Not to be missed, and this is an ideal place for an excellent taster. Friendly service, and good picnic table.

We stopped by Curly Tree for a quick snack - the tasty whitebait toast costs $10 each. Worth trying if you’d like to know what the locals dig!

We popped by to try the whitebait en route to Wanaka. A short detour right after a one-lane bridge brings your to Curly Tree. Here you can enjoy whitebait fried in a batter and served on a slice of soft white bread. Excellent snack and...makes a good break from driving.More

Fresh from the sea. Personality +++. Great chat. Nice chap. Don’t miss this even if as I did, you overshoot the turn and have to go back!! $10 for one patty on bread with condiments. Very casual and rustic.

I read about Curly Tree on a blog while researching my West coast drive. Starving by the time I got there (after staring in wonder at the many sites on route), this whitebait special did not disappoint. Delicious and beautifully seasoned. I was just sorry...I didn't get another 5 to take away for the rest of my journey!More

Random stop on our way to wanaka, saw a sign for whitebait so we stopped. Cute little shop, super friendly staff, gave us heat of background info on the area and about where they whitebait. She cooked us up the most delish whitebait. Super simple,...white bread with a patty on it, a squeeze of citrus, some mint sauce and salt and pepper. Can't wait for another road trip through there so I can stop again.More

This is a most unique local delicacy ! The whitebaits are caught from the river beside the house! Friendly chef, genuine and warm. The place is just off the highway. One can add a touch of mint sauce and a few drops of lemon to...the patties too. A great brunch or lunner!More

We were glad this long known place is reopened again. We looked forward to experience this New Zealand gourmet. On the way from Queenstown to Fox Glacier, there was sign on the left and through some pebble road, we ended up in this booth. There...was a tour bus, but unfortunately not everyone like whitebait, they only sold a few patties. Each piece was 10NZ panfried on a grill and put on a white piece of bread. Even its a bit more expansive than other places, but Curly Tree whitebait is at a rural, nobody place, you need to support their effort. The owner live next door and there are no tables or chairs available, but it was an experience.More

Hi there - sorry we are closed until the next whitebait season, starting 1st Sept 2017. We only cook whitebait patties, which consist of NZ West Coast whitebait, and a little egg to bind. So yes, we could scramble or fry... More
